Guys in Burma still under siege. I've probably lost them all. If/when they go, Burma's pretty much gift-wrapped for him and I'll have to worry about India again. Fortunately, lots of heavy bomber squadrons are inbound. Time to develop more bases in East India. I'm already starting to pull airplanes out. Once they're clear, everyone can trek overland back to India and build up the east.

Looking at how he's completely neglected the DEI, I'm loading up an amphibious group destined for Waingapoe, between Timor and Java. I can develop it into a good size airfield. I can probably get it built up without him even knowing. A USA infantry regiment and some base/construction forces will be enroute. I can eventually move some B-17 squadrons in and some oil raids on Soerabaja will definitely get his attention. Troop transport in Australia is pretty thin right now (as it is everywhere), but I can probably make a slow push from the south. I'll move plenty of fighters in also to help defend it. Maybe Dauntless and such to mess with oil shipping. Causing trouble here while also moving in on the Marianas can only help things.

Instead of Dauntlesses which you may need for your carriers, I suggest using the Vindicators. Longer range on transfer and longer range on strike.

I'm more confined by fighter range, as I don't want them to go in unescorted.

SB2U pool is pretty down at this point. I used them heavily at Port Moresby.

Three months before my F4U pool fills up enough to equip a squadron.

My stack of forces in Burma are getting ground down. He's been bombarding the last 4 days and was attacking the 5 before that. They're not holding up well. I'm hoping most of them can respawn at some point.

Elsewhere, My troops bound for Waingapoe should arrive within a week. If I can build up that base quickly, I can start a bombing campaign against Soerabaja. B-17s and B-24s are staging within reach.

At Pearl, My Marianas invasion is loading up. I should have more than enough troops to take the islands and more than enough to get the bases to a high level. Large amounts of aircraft will also ship over. Each of the three islands should also have over 100k in supply also.

If he's committing heavily to Burma, I can make trouble elsewhere.

My gut feeling is that Stevie is taking lots of shortcuts running the Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere.

He hasn't touched the whole eastern half of the DEI.

We'll find out how well his bases are protected.

Invasion convoy is loaded and will depart next turn. I'm estimating 2.5 - 3.5 week transit time. 3 BBs, 3 CAs and 2 CLs are with each invasion force. Washington and North Carolina will be out of the yard next turn and will each accompany a CV TF, bringing two battleships with each. More bait for any bombers. A minesweeping group will accompany each group. Normally, I also attach an ASW group to each force also, but it's probably overkill and everyone else is well escorted. I almost never send a bombardment group with invaders. Battleships embedded with the invaders seem to deal out more pain there than if separate. I can always pull them out later for a follow-on bombardment if needed. More hard targets for enemy bombers, if needed. If his search practices are as sloppy as I suspect, he won't know what's happening until it happens. Otherwise, I simply have too many carriers covering anyway. 4 CVEs are in their own group solely providing fighter cover. I'll keep everyone training until I pass the Marshalls -- maybe earlier.

As mentioned, his carrier strength seems to be covering Burma, so I'm not expecting much seaborn resistance. It's half tempting to send them to Luzon, but these bases need to go.

Japanese attacked at Moulmein again, getting 2-1 odds. Probably won't be long. The last of my aircraft in Burma have departed for India and all support forces are moving north to cross the border.

Such high hopes flipped on its head there...

My convoy enroute to Whaingapoe encountered a sub off the east coast of Timor. Hopefully, he thinks I'm reinforcing there. I may have one of my subs in the area follow the convoy to maybe catch his subs.

When things go wrong...

My expedition to Waingapoe came to a fiery end. A KB sized carrier group showed up east of Java and proceeded to do nothing but sink ships. Not sure why they were in the area to begin with. Seems an odd place to park them, unless he was expecting an offensive here eventually.

This hurts, as Australian transport is at a premium to begin with. They're heading to Darwin, but I'm not hopeful.

Anything that can go wrong will go wrong, it seems.

If KB stays away from the Marianas, I'll be happy.

It appears that it is your invasion force which has gotten blown out of the water

The other one won't be so vulnerable. Technically, it wasn't an invasion force, as that island was still mine.

He didn't continue with the air attacks this turn. Not that there's much left.

Stuff's moving slowly. Invasion force nearing the Marshalls.

One tidbit I noticed... F4Fs now carry tanks, so I can now make better use of the range of SBD and TBFs.

Do you have enough amhib shipping i.e. APAs and AKAs already for invading Saipan, Tinian and Guam simultaneously?!?

At this stage of the war, there's pretty much none of those yet. I can't expect them until well into 1943. I have about 12 AP/AKs with each group, with the rest being xAP/xAKs.

I'm hitting 3 sites simultaneously: Guam, Tinian and Saipan. I'm packing 4 battleships with each group.

Rethinking my strategies a bit.

I've recalled my Marianas invaders. Most of the TFs are spotted, though only at about level 3 or less. I'm guessing search planes at Wake found them. I should have thought this through earlier. My new plans are to take Wake and probably Marcus Is before pushing on further west. I can better ensure surprise from that point.

Steve's finally decided to make a move in the DEI, landing troops at Ambon. They landed, but his ships got roughed up a bit by the coast defenses.

Thinking over things, I'm trying too much to fast. I'll most likely take the Marianas in 1943, which is still far ahead of schedule. Lots of Essexes can help out then, too, and I'll probably have more dedicated amphibious ships by then also. Maybe also an amphib HQ with a command ship. I do want to take Wake by December and Marcus not long afterward.

In the States and Panama, I've had a number of APcs start to arrive. Not sure how suitable they'll be for amphib operations. They don't carry a lot, however. Speed isn't an asset either.

APc's? Armoured Personnel Carriers sure do not carry many troops - and they don't float so well either!
Is there another type of equipment called APc?

Haven't seen them in any of the stock scenarios, thus my confusion. I was thinking it might be a typo for APD.

APc = coastal transports. Also known as "apple carts". Based on the hull of a AMc class and originally requested as "Raider transports". However, the new landing craft classes were found to be more suitable for that role. Therefore APc were not used for amphibious assaults (and the game does not allow them to be used in that role) but to ferry personnel and supplies ("ass and trash") from forward depots to landing sites near the front (any beach, cove, inlet etc. would do). Esp. useful when the amount of people / stuff to move was too small, the conditions at the loading/unloading sites too dangerous (shallow water, reefs etc.) and the risk of enemy intervention too high for the use of a regular transport. The APc augmented the large number of civilian small craft like trawlers, sailing boats, yachts, tugs etc. purchased / commandeered by the Army "Small Ships Section". My mod includes a number (but far from all) small craft of different types and sizes, which might be useful (esp. if you "role-play" the game) with the increased number of dot bases in the PNG / Solomons area. See http://www.transportation.army.mil/history/documents/Small%20Ships%20History.pdf

Moulmein's still holding out. He's getting 5-1 odds on me now, but isn't really piling on heavy casualties. This will probably go on for awhile.

At Ambon, this is turning out to be a tough nut for him to crack.

Meanwhile, in China...

My river flotilla on the Yangtse ran into some of his river craft. I surprised him and beat him good. His river forces aren't following the traditions of the IJN.

06 Dec 1942

Getting through the year. Hopefully, sub torps will start working a bit in January.

LSTs and LCIs are slowly trickling in from the States and Panama. Extra tools for invasions.

Moulmein's still grinding on. Gives everyone else a chance to escape to India.

My invaders have mostly all unloaded at Pearl. More invaders for Wake and Marcus are busy prepping. If I can take one or both in January, hopefully I can have one squadron of fighters flipped to F4Us by then for island defense. Once those islands are secure, I can deal with the Marianas. If I deal with KB in the process, I can take comfort knowing loads more carriers will arrive shortly.

Two massive convoys of fuel are bound to Sydney from the US, as I've run my fuel down pretty good there. Probably over 350k on the way. Another convoy is enroute from Abaddon, taking the long way there. Hopefully KB stays out of the Indian ocean.

I've been bombing refineries at Rangoon. They're something like 81(105) now.

Rabaul was hit a few days ago. Lightnings can escort all the way.

What does the upward "arrow" symbol at the end of I-19 denote?

The "arrow" designates subs which are carrying a floatplane. An underscore designates midget-sub carriers. An asteristic designates mine-laying subs. Helps with identification without having to enter the ship screen.

Thanks! I haven't noticed that stuff before in any AAR regardless of mod - but then I usually read the Allied side so I don't see the IJN OOB except in combat reports.

"~" indicates the ship will withdraw, which is handy to see at a glance.

Things are winding down at Moulmein, with the Australian 6th and 7th divisions left there. Probably wind up within a week.

Time is winding down for my invasions of Wake and Marcus. They'll be departing within a few weeks. Once those are secure, I'll have a more clear way into the Marianas.

Moulmein finally falls. The downside is that all the units don't appear to be respawnable.

Another big of ground units west of Rangoon were trying to escape. They're now stuck in a Japanese occupied hex and will also slowly die. I managed to evacuate some fragments of these by sea. Another large group has made it to Imphal and more have reached Akyab. Enough to defend India at this point, though I doubt that will come.

My Wake invaders have departed Pearl. The Marcus invaders and the support forces and aircraft will leave in a day or two. Two carrier groups with 3 CVs each will escort the invaders. A CVE group with 6 jeep carriers are also along, so I can probably shrug off any attack which may come in. I have 6-7 battleships plus 4 CA with each invasion group, so they'll deal a hammer blow to any defenders. I've enough assault transports (AP and AK) to haul all the troops. More amphib ships are enroute to Pearl, so I'm in good shape at that end. Once these two islands are taken, I'll move on the Marianas. I'm bringing enough planes to Wake and Marcus where they can probably defend themselves fairly well.

If KB doesn't contest or gets beaten, my carriers may sweep Japanese waters to catch any tankers or transports. I've still officially claimed only two fleet carriers, but I'm pretty certain I sunk a third.

Looking forward to 1943. Corsairs will arrive and my subs' dud rate should drop a bit.

Units that disband or are withdrawn are not able to be bought. If you have any fragments of the units, then one of those fragments will become the units.

General to LT: "LT, you unit was destroyed, you are now in command of the entire unit."

The LT (with a wounded corporal, a wounded supply clerk, and a wounded cook) "Sir, you mean my company was destroyed?"

General "No . . "

LT "You mean my battalion"

General "No . . . "

LT "You mean my regiment"

General "No . . . "

LT "You mean my brigade?"

General "I mean your division. You need to rebuild it and be ready for combat!"

LT then crumples to the floor, passed out.

Another year, a good one.

Hopefully subs will perform somewhat better now. The F4U pool is starting to build, which can only help things.

Wake invaders are 13 hexes from their target. They should land early in the turn on Friday. My groups here have just gotten spotted this turn. Fortunately, I've sighted a decent sized IJN carrier group sitting in the Shortlands right now. Dive bombers from Lunga went at them without escort and got beat up for it.

Bombers at Calcutta have been hitting the oil fields at Magwe in Burma. Nearly half of them are wrecked now. It only helps to shut off any oil resources.

Once I have Wake/Marcus wrapped up, I should be able to kick off the Marianas campaign nearly immediately. More assault transports have been reaching Pearl, so shipping troops shouldn't be an issue. If I can take that without issue, I can start looking at the Philippines.

Getting closer.

My ASW air patrols around my invaders show about 5 IJN submarines at or near Wake. The usual Mundy invasion protocols would have ASW groups attached, but I neglected it this time. He's got a good look at my invaders, with battleships and transports being seen with his attack. My DDs pounded that sub pretty good, but I have to deal with the rest. I currently have all float planes assigned to ASW.

We'll see. Marcus is probably quieter.

His carriers at Shortlands have disappeared. Wonder if they're headed north. I think a big mistake for him if he does.
