I've been playing scenario 17 as the IJN vs the AI in an attempt to learn the game. I have reached mid November. Beginning in October I began to suffer high operational losses among fighter squadrons (set to 90% cap) even when the base isn't being attacked. Earlier in the game I was losing 1-2 non float/patrol planes a day. Now I'm losing 9-10 fighters a day if I'm just defending. If I go into escort with naval attack my op losses double. I had one day where I shut down all aircraft except for two squadrons set to 50% traiining and I lost 5 fighters. My fighter pools are empty and squadron attrition has begun. Overall op losses amount to 48% of all losses during the game. Overall I've lost about 1200 aircraft and have about the same amount left. At the rate I'm going I will run out of aircarft (through op losses alone) in mid June of 43.

Is this just the normal situation that Japan has to deal with or am I doing something wrong? All game, my aircraft have never flown above a fatigue of 40 and rarely have they flown above 25 since about July. Morale remains high, as does leadership and inspiration (except in the Oscar and Kate squadrons). All I can think of is that experience is very low (sub 50) in a couple of squadrons and generally low (60-70) throughout.

Any thoughts would be appreciated for futrure games.

The problem with Scenario #17 is that overall Japanese replacement pilot
skills are extremely low.

They can't even take off and/or land without crashing..

There is nothing you can do to rectify this other than try to make them
achieve higher experience levels. And you have to train/fight them to achieve
this - but in order for you to do it you must fly and thus operational losses.

It's "Catch 22" and there is no easy way out... :-(

Please note that experience level is average. So if you have average levels
of 50 it means that some of you pilots in squadrons are even below this. The
60-70 is also bad since it mean average (thus some pilots are in 40-ies)...

I once had a pilot who must have been blind. HE was only 16 experience on arrival. I normally leave my training squadrons at Rabaul. I set them to 20%. I stand them down on bad weather days.
It doesn't take long for them to reach 59. When you think about it, the only real restriction is the number of planes. It is pointless letting them crash for nouhht.

Thanks guys. From the responses it appears my problem is just a normal game factor. Helps to know I'm not doing anything outrageously dumb.

How long does it take you to train 20 EXP unit into 50+ EXP unit?

How many aircraft they destroy in process?

If one pops up in group of good 70+ experience unit who are at the front line, too bad. He knows no one will hear him scream because there isn't a radio in the plane.

If a unit has many very low skill pilots it is worthwhile to try to make these guys combat worthy. If Rabaul not under threat of attack I leave them there. While on training 20% they take about 30-40 days to get into the fifties. Sometimes if the strategic situation is pressing you might have to use them earlier. I don't usually push them too hard. Sometimes after a storm I might go to 30% and then back down again. Or I might place fighters on 20% Cap or bombers on naval search to vary which pilots fly.
