Hi.

I noticed that surface ships (and some old subs) could not detect active sonar emission with
their passive sonar without acoustic interceptor sets.

I think it is nonsense, as for many times I was told (this explanation is misleading―as if I were submariner!)
NOT TO USE ACTIVE SONAR unless you absolutely need, because it is like turning on flashlight in darkness.
But this allows submarines to use their active sonar anytime you need.

Here is test scenario attached (Build latest 1009 Let me say it's a great work).

Situation:
USS Oldendorf (DD-772) Spruance-class DD (id 706) is stationed GIUK Gap at N60 W12.

Around Oldendorf, Russian Victor III SSNs (id 454) are stationed (depth is set to -20m) every 30deg and 5nm (the spiral is to avoid target masking).
Locked Reference Points are shown on your map (note: I used lua to create so there is "390 deg", just ignore).
Specially, I made 68nm 405deg Victor for second Convergence Zone at 68nm.

All Victors are Using Shark Gill (MGK-500 Skat-1) Hull Sonar (LF) in Active mode,
with Mouse Roar (MG-519 Alfa-M) Mine Avoidance Sonar (HF).

Start the time and after you satisfied, add "Generic Acoustic Intercept" (id 4402, also fitted in Victor III, max range is 150nm)
to Oldendorf (I made Special Action but it doesn't work. so please add manually).
That will make a difference.

Notes:
Oldendorf detects only Victor in 5nm/30deg with AN/SQS-53B(V)1 Hull Sonar.
she cannot hear active sonar "chorus" of other Victors.

Just like TASS, Acoustic Interceptor can make use of Convergence Zone.
(I totally didn't know that)

Active sonar emissions from Victor in 5nm 30deg cannot be intercepted.
I think it's because Oldendorf is at "buffle" of Victor sonars.

We can intercept Shark Gill (LF Sonar) from every Victor detected (Exeption:above),
but Mouse Roar (HF Sonar) can be intercepted only which is from Victor at 35nm (first Convergence Zone).
I'm not sure the reason.

I'm no familiar with mechanical engineering nor acoustics (even submarine and ASW tactics),
so it is possible I was nonsense.
Anybody familiar enlighten me.

Good find.
Detection of an enemy sub with active radar on or off is the same. Which is nonsense.

Retired Sonar Tech here, and ill check on this.

Set the DD on a northerly course at 5 knots (creep) it immediately detects a SSN at 4.9 miles or so. none of my sensors are active. I see there is no weather factoring into this, so this is a good pickup at range. ASROC Away!

Looks like Ramius got lucky with the first ASROC so fire two.

While the second ASROC is prosecuting the first SSN, a second Goblin contact is picked up at 23+ miles away! This quickly gets computed down to 7.2 miles range. Still pretty impressive. And there is NO weather conditions. In this part of the world, a day doesn't go by where there is a good sea state.

The first Victor is smart and went quiet, my second ASROC is circling trying to find it but cant.

I eventually sink a few more, all at range, without using active. killed one that was 15 nm's off.

I would become an ace if i had a heli.

I see no problem here.
