This is my China map from Dec 8, 1941. I use it for relocating chinese troops together with their HQs. I hope the 'icons' are self explaining.

Legend:
WA: war area
A: group army

Good one, very clear with the different colours for each War Area.
I’ve done similar but nowhere near as easy on the eye.

Likely was defending in the Hankow/Wuchow area and got forced north instead of south like the rest of 3rd War Area. If the Japanese tanks were in the area, retreating to the forests was indeed "Chinese Wisdom".

There is a distinct lack of information on the English language version of the inter web regarding Chinese Nationalist Army history for some reason...
My interest in this theatre far outstrips my knowledge, but there was no single coordinated leader like we can be in game.
From the little I’ve read many armies were still lead by regionally based warlords with vested interests inside their territory and internal political power struggles to contend with. The Japanese Army was just one of a number of threats to them.
Pure speculation on my part, but 33 Group Army May have been assigned to 3rd War Area on paper, but home territory may have been where it appears on the map and it was still in the process of transferring forward as at Dec 1941.
One thing the allied player has to do early war is prioritise which War Area(s) get the reinforcements and modern equipment upgrades and which ones have to make do. I understand that Chiang Kai Shek chose to keep it all for his Central Reserve troops, as protection against both the Japanese Army but also as insurance against other domestic threats, but we can freely pick our own favourite War Area / General to send all the modern equipment to.

To alleviate the pains one has with Chinas OOB: right now I've started to draw a map that shows all chinese units on december 7, 1941.
