Turn 18. Sep/Oct 1942. Allied #5.

USN (7/8). Coral Sea. A US marine amphibious force consisting of the 1st and 2nd Marine divisions are sent to the Coral Sea. They're headed for New Britain and (also eventually) Rabul.

Turn 18. Sep/Oct 1942. Allied #5.

USN (8/8). South China Sea (1/2). Two USN sub groups based in the Philippines are sent into the South China Sea to find and sink Japanese Convoys. One sub group, the one in the higher box, manages to find and sink 3 IJN convoys and abort a 4th.

Turn 18. Sep/Oct 1942. Allied #5.

USN (8/8). South China Sea (2/2). The USN loses contact with the Japanese. However, the Japanese maintain contact with the USN sub groups. Because of the surprise impulse, only the US gets surprise points and they use them to dive deep and end this battle in order to live to fight another day.

As a side note, US sub captains are reporting that they're having problems with their Mark 14 torpedos. These captains and crews are seeing a large number of "duds" for optimum shots (i.e., shots to the broadside of ships). Ironically, the captains are getting the best results for oblique angle shots. The manufacture of the Mark 14, Naval Torpedo Station and their government overseers are claiming that the fault lies not with the Mark 14 torpedo but with the sub captains and crews themselves. A number of sub captains who have put their lives, and the lives of their crews, on the line are incensed by this callus and cowardly response and vow to take this to the highest levels in the Navy and US government.

If it weren't for the collapse of the Red Army, I'd say that despite the late US entry the Allies are in a decent spot this game:
- Japan's behind on its overseas attacks and building its Pacific perimeter
- Once the US can flood troops into Sicily/Italy, the Allies should be able to force its incomplete conquest later this game year unless the Axis takes Naples back.

Sadly, the vaporisation of the Red Army means they won't be able to leverage those advantages into victory.

IJN. (Non-Phasing). The Arabian Sea. The luck ran out for a convoy point based in the Philippines at the start of the impulse. This CP ran by two intercept attempts by the IJN in the South China Sea and Bay of Bengal to start work in the Arabian Sea. However, IJN heavy cruisers patrolling this sea area were able to find and sink the lone US CP. This CP is the first US loss of the war.

This game for me is definitely interesting and fun. It feels to me that the allies still have a decent shot to win the war. Note that I said war and not game. I'm playing with extended length.

The allies plan is to: (1) knock Italy out, (2) cripple Japan, (3) get help/resources/build points (somehow) to the USSR.

Turn 18. Sep/Oct 1942. Allied #5.

USN. New Ireland. Ground Strike. There's a 90% chance that the allies will get another impulse this turn and if they do then New Ireland, New Britain and especially Rabul will be allied control.

All this is good, but on the other hand the Soviets need this turn to end as soon as possible. So, as the allies, I'm conflicted on whether or not I want the allies to get another impulse this turn.

Turn 18. Sep/Oct 1942. Allied #5.

The Italian Front. Free French Naval Pickup. I've learning the power of having Free French sea (and air) lift and here's another example. The Naples bridgehead consisted of a corps and two divisions. I was able to use a French CA to pick up a division that left room for the Brits, who took a land, to move and Indian mech from Salerno into Naples, then move the Royal Marines corps from Naples to Salerno and then finally disembark an Indian mot into Naples.

Also, note that while the US is not at war with Germany or Italy, they've moved their 3rd and 4th infantry divisions along with three heavy cruisers off the Italian Coast.

Turn 18. Sep/Oct 1942. Axis #7.

Actions. Japan - land, Germany - combine, Italy - naval.

The Italian Front. In preparation of the likely surrender of the Italians to the allies, Germany uses 5 of her 6 land moves for the Italian theater to either strengthen her defensive line in the south or to create ZOC locks to maintain control of territory in the North if, or when, Italy surrenders.

Italy took a naval in order to get all her subs based in La Spezia, Italy and in Bordeaux, France out into the Atlantic, joined up with German u-boats and looking for allied convoys to sink.

The rest of this impulse for the Euro-Axis was just about that, which is trying to sink allied convoys.

NOTE: The Germans are quite aware of the defense gap in Leghorn and the hex southeast and plan to fill it as soon as practical. And they're quite aware how critical it is to fill much sooner rather than later because of the 3 British marine units operating in the area.

Japan. Palembang, NEI. Ground Strike. Missed again. Odds just aren't there to take on the NEI Terr unit, so looks like the Japanese are going to see 1 oil point damaged.

Are you aware of the rule that if the Germans get enough units on the Russo-Turkish border, Turkey comes in on the Axis side? Both sides should be preparing for this.
