The term 'double u' is an English invention for the letter, and English is a hybrid of almost everything.

Hybrid implies you know the mixture - English is a mongrel language, morphing as we watch.

Keeping up with the times is one thing, but most kids now do not get the power of the language which is best taught by reading books by skilled wordsmith authors.

We have a language, but it contains no regular consonants. It consists of mainly ooohs and uhs, and the order they come in is essential to understanding their meaning. In some dialects there occur yai yai yais and in those cases you have the consonant y. I have heard tell of other dialects where some gorn have evolved to use the dental "doh", but those people are unintelligible to me. I just have to draw the line somewhere.

Gorns can hiss but can they kiss?

Why did they dye themselves green from Purple and cut off their tails?

I don't know where you're from, but here in Missouri we have lizards that, as a defense mechanism, if you grab them by the tail, they drop their tails and run free, then later they regrow them. We just tired of regrowing them. Evolutionary wise it is more efficient and makes us superior. Unfortunately, we have not learned to grab these little rascally lizards by other body parts, so we only dine on their tails.

And hissing isn't a part of speech, but if you want to imitate ours, think Yiddish. Chhhhhhhhhhhhh.

nth power? I thought Ents were only in the Lord of the Rings franchise? Does nth mean "warped"?

About the only word of Yiddish that I regularly use is "dreck" and only when I am in a certain mood.

While TDY out in Fort Huachuca, AZ a couple of rocket scientists had to take a jammer set over to Fort Bliss, TX for field testing. Didn't like the route the Army had picked for them. On their shortcut they hit an overpass, drove the AC units right into the transmitters. Oops.

Bus exploding as it tries to enter a tunnel. The bus has it biogas tanks on the bus roof and it hits a beam just outside the tunnel that is there to stop to high vehicles from getting stuck in the tunnel.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LdAoknrHh2Y

Funny thing is, or perhaps sad, is that some think it is a hoax. Despite that there were plenty of witnesses. A badly wounded driver. And clean-up work took a week. So many could see the evidence of the explosion. After all, it happened at a central traffic hub in Stockholm.

The driver taking the film new that the bus was to high for the tunnel and tried to warn it, failed, and started filming. he thought it would just get stuck...

A little announcement. A couple of friends of mine have been working for over 45 years on the translation below and they finally think they’ve got it right. They’ve essentially translated it uncounted times, finding the result insufficient each time and starting over nearly from scratch. It was a process of coming to really understand the material and figuring out how to say it in English, or specifically American English. I’m not recommending this to anyone, even in English the stuff just makes my brain hurt, but then I’m just a gorn. It isn’t actually available yet, we haven’t proofed the “galleys” yet. It’s scheduled to come out in September. Peter Fuss was born in Berlin in 1932 of a Jewish father and a Catholic mother. They escaped before it was too late and came to New York.

I don't know if all of you are aware of this, but some Italian BBs like the Gulio Cesare had an underwater protection scheme called the Pugliese system. Essentially the torpedo bulges were filled with al dente spaghetti (although linguini was sometimes used). This required frequent refits, however, but that suited the crews well.

I’ve recently been pondering the origins of the term “pear shaped”, or “to go pear shaped” for when things go wrong.
For example, scenario: outnumbered by the enemy, caught in poor defensive terrain and running low on ammunition
Tactical commander: “things are starting to go a bit pear shaped”
Why and when was the pear singled out to be the fruit of choice in this context?
I don’t think that the pear has a shape that is noticeably bad or wrong.
It’s not bent like a banana and there are many other fruits that look like their shape was designed by a 4 year old with a crayon that has eaten too much sugar.

Probably meant to refer to pear-shaped humans whose chests have dropped into their pelvic regions with the skin stretching to accommodate the volume - definitely a thing most people do not want to happen - and only partly because they don't want to be objects of gorn lust!

Here's one I can post in full. She liked horses (don't they all?).

Isn't everyone glad we're off that page with Ron Jeremy in it?

I think she's financially secure but she lives in a cabin somewhere in the Ozarks.

There's one flaw in this pic, those boots are a man's boots, too big for her, but she did like wearing very fashionable knee-high boots.

Another fine example of focus
