I have been following this product since its release. Always wait for a few patches and to gauge user feedback before buying.
With the 30% discount now being offered:

1. 98%+ bug free?
2. Axis/Allies...which alliance offers the greatest challenge in the 1939-1945 campaign?
3. Mods that really enhance game play at this point in its development?
4. Any "house rules" that need to be put place so as not to fleece the AI?
5. PDF manual still accurate/updated with the new patches?
6. Any "glaring" shortcomings with the product at this point?

Thanks for any insights!

1. I did not encounter any real bugs at this point.
2. Hard to say, as i am only playing against humans at this point.
What i can say:
As Axis you have to be more active and as allies you have to slow the axis actions till 1942\1943, when you are able to counter attack.
3. I dont know much about this. I read about a mod, that changes naval play. I tested the 1944 mod as axis, which is a great challange.
4. AI should put up a good fight. But experienced players should be able to win at sea very easy, as the navy could be considered the weak point of the AI.
5. Not into every detail as i know. But the big picture should be still accurate.
6. Not to my knowledge.

I played every SC game since the first against AI and humans and i am very happy with this version.

Absolutely worth it with the 30% off!

In my opinion...

1. At the moment, can't think of any bugs that are still around. The developers work pretty hard at listening to the players and dealing with issues and bugs fairly quickly.
2. Depends on level chosen, but initially it's Axis.
3. After many, many, many games the Iron Cross 2D Counter & Map Mod(really helps with visuals for weather, mostly a visual mod that freshens it up a bit and less strain on the eyes, nice looking counters), and I'm sure that The Fall Weiss II mod(when it's adapted and released for WaW, it was a really good mod for War in Europe), will add fun new decisions, events and visual changes.
4. It takes a decent understanding of the game, but eventually it's pretty easy to wipe out naval units going against the a.i.
5. Yes. Read it in it's entirety and you'll probably never need to ask a question in the forum.
6. Nothing glaring. Maybe work on improving the variety of terrain and weather backgrounds on the map, but again that's just my opinion.

*Edit or clarification after reading my post...

2. ... but initially it's the Axis.

I'm talking about an entire play-through, a complete game, all the way to the end of campaign/scenario that the Axis is initially more of a challenge.

Really enjoying the game. The AI is adequate for I'd say 2 games for each side. After that you'll be able to beat it very easily.

I have War In Europe. Just getting into it. Is World at War a must have? Or should I stick with what I have?

I know the scope is much different but if I were playing as, say, Germany, would it be a vastly different experience?

Oddly, my question was the reverse. Having the worldwide version, why should I want to get a pared-down Europe only game? In the end, I decided to, for three reasons.

1) There are circumstances where one theater impacts another. This is largest for the US and UK, of course, where hard decisions must be made about where to allocate efforts in the worldwide game (both material and research). However, there are ways for Germany to influence Asia (an event allows for a U-Boat base to be set up, for instance), and the surface raiders can make an impact well beyond their cost. Then too, The USSR has to keep an eye on the far east which certainly will impact Barbarossa!

2) The Europe game, which I've not played much yet, does seem to have a more detailed focus. If your preference is for higher-level, Worldwide is certainly a worthy choice to make.

3) I wanted to support the designers. PC games, even very successful ones, don't sell massive numbers. Making this purchase will put a few bucks in the pockets of some people who put a lot of time and effort into the development of the game, are very accessible for tech support, and make ongoing efforts to improve the product via patches.

So, to me, at least, very worth the investment. If you do choose to buy and are looking for an amateurish opponent to learn the game against, send me a note and I'm happy to play you a game!

My biggest complaint against WaW is the reduced scale compared to WiE. It really impacts the game a lot imho. This is especially true in Europe when coming from the scale and experience from WiE

However, if you want a global game for WWII you really do not have a lot of options. This, HoI series, and World in Flames. I would pick World in Flames for the best complete WWII experience. But needless to say WaW is much easier to pick up and play versus the others.

So it just depends on what you are looking for. I will point out that the new Man the Guns DLC for HoI 4 really improved the game a lot for the Navies of the world. Plus ships actually use fuel to sail around which really impacts the PTO.

I hope you found this helpful.

I think my mod for Advanced Tactics Gold (GD1938) captures the WW2 grand scenario situation great as well... Just putting it out there, since someone began mentioning other games...

Definite buy and on-sale a no-brainer. PLaying against AI, Allied is harder as Axis steamrolls you in USSR - especially on higher difficulty levels.

PBEM is great - decent players and haven't found games to be exploit driven.

My question is, is the War in the Pacific adequately modeled? I read some comments that the naval AI isn't really up to snuff regarding operations in the Pacific. If the answer is, not so much then I would be happy just playing War in Europe.

@Delaware --- Game is awesome, blast to play. The A.I. doesn't count, who gives a snot (spelling, cannot type what I want to type)? So, a few whiners need an A.I.? Come play the Big Boys, the Heavyweight Division. World War ain't World War unless...well, unless the whole World is in it.

The game costs what on Easter sale, $30? (should be able to say Easter, since Matrix says it)
I spent $86 on a tank of gas for my Monster Truck.

So, there's your answer. Buy it!!!!!!

I'm not too happy with the PTO. But after playing War in the Pacific AE a lot, what game would make me happy lol.

I think the PTO is where the compressed time and map scale really hurts the game. If they had kept the same time and map scale as in WiE then this would have been a MUCH better game. Maybe the next version will do the trick for me

I still would have preferred a stand-a-lone PTO game on a different scale than World at War!

The scale of the game is a big drawback, and almost prevented me from buying it.

I was on the fence about getting SC:WAW because I wasn't sure that I was going to like it, but have found that it's a lot of fun, in spite of its flaws (no stacking, bad naval system, distorted geography).

Once you get past the game being designed around a game system rather than the situation it portrays, it would be a shame to pass this one up.

I bought it. It was only $27 bucks with the Easter coupon. IF nothing else, I support the development of future patches to correct the above.

Good decision. Play SP for a while to learn the mechanics and then plunge into the PBEM arena.

Just want to say thanks as you are right, and this enables us to keep going and hopefully create more and more games as time passes.

I would suggest watching https://www.twitch.tv/slitherinegroup, the weekly twitch stream, with Gamer1745, he plays the game weekly for 2-3 hours a week. You can ask him questions and get a good feel of the AI and game.

Personally I love the game. The scale different then War in Europe, but I love the Far East Front with Japan and China, Being Include.

Totally agree. I will always buy games from Fury even if I end up not happy with them in order to support their efforts.

For the record I own all their games from SC2 on and WaW is the first one I did not care for. So I'm willing to cut them some slack for all the other great titles

But the next game better be awesome

Totally agree. It's peanuts. I just spent $80 at the Bar, plus $15 tip for what, half dozen rounds of some whacky micros beers that are going to kill me.

When I hit the casino, I play $130/$135 across in Craps.

This game is a classic, for $27, it's laughable.

Buy the game. It's the best WW2 grand strategy game to date by a large margin, plus Hubert's support for his products is legendary.

Philippe, we both know that this is true of more games than anyone would ever care to admit.
