No discredit to GJK's great work on the alternate map presentation but I have noticed a handful of minor errors resulting from terrain 'splashovers' in the original map.

The changes are hardly significant in game terms but I noticed that stacking limits didn't always conform to the terrain shown on the map, There's about 6 hexes which I've clarified in Europe (5 in the East) and a fair number in Syria / Iraq.

In Europe most were Marsh hexes which were shown as forest (mainly in East Prussia) and so stacking is reduced by 1 point compared to Forest. There was one Mountain hex on the Romania / Hungary border which appeared as Forest instead which I've corrected.

In the Desert areas, several more fertile hexes are actually Clear, with resultantly increased stacking limits, so these are now shown as Clear.

Does anyone know of any others? I think I've checked them all.

Also, I was annoyed by what I described as the 'mirror like object' covering North Africa (an unplayable area), and so I have covered that with the GoA Loading Screen on both the combat map and the minimap.

I'm not sure how to make these files available for anyone who's interested?

Again, it was NOT GJK's fault. Terrain splashovers caused it.

The 'mirror object' at least gives a useful space, perhaps for a map legend (Terrain Effects), or any other chart (hex stacking chart), manual data etc., which might be useful as a reminder when playing.

Same problem with map mods for other Frank Hunter games, 'Campaigns the Danube' and 'Piercing Fortress Europa', not the fault of the modders, who have faithfully reproduced the game map data, but containing errors carried over from the original mapping.

Here's an screen example with the 'Stacking Limits' chart as an aide memoire, but you could use the space for anything useful.

Alternatively you could put in any appropriate art, or image, to get the atmosphere of the events.

Here is an in-game screen.

When pushing round army corps I think that it is good to remember the men who found themselves in the front line.

I think that my choice would be to put an image, such as above, into the game screen and the 'Guns of August' motif into the blank space in the jump map.

This fills in the blank spaces on the overview map and the smaller jump map at the bottom of the screen.

Not much, but fills in the blanks.

Whatever happened to this in the game folder, which looks like the start of another board game type map for GoA, or is it just the alternative map we already have at an earlier stage of development ?

Either way the game would benefit from another map mod update.

Hi Rasputitsa

Interesting ideas.

I've not seen the later map you've shown. Don't see it in my GoA's folders.

It's 'GOAMapNew' in the GRAPHICS folder, look's like someone was trying something with maps. Probably nothing, or we would have heard something of it by now, it may even be early work on the Alternative map that is already available.

However this game could benefit from an updated map, like those provided for CoTD and PFE.

The alternative map is supplied with the latest version of the game issued by Matrix, so that the standard game gives you two options.

The rest is just speculation that there may have been plans for other map options, which did not materialise.

Otherwise all we are discussing are graphic packages to put in a blank area in both GoA maps, just to fill in what is now a grey hole in the bottom left of the game screen.

Hi, All

Apologies, I think my email notifications for this thread had expired.

Anyone who would like my map with the terrain clarifications should PM me and I'll send it along by email.

@Rasputisata - I'm not sure we could agree on an overall map mod? Your ideas are certainly interesting but the photo of the French infantry was not to my taste. Now, if that photo could be rotated or randomly displayed with an appropriate photo by each nationality, then that would be interesting!

The image I used was just to demonstrate what could be done and it was an image I had easily available, that I was using in another game (TOAW 4). I am sure there are other suitable images that could be used. Not sure about the random image idea, which would need additional software, but 'SourceForge' have a 'Random file picker' available on free download.

You would have to run the random file picker on the various alternative map file image options, before opening the main game, but I guess it could work.
