quote:
ORIGINAL: Curtis Lemay It lists Lutjens, but only because the Bismarck got sunk. That seemed inevitable, though, considering the odds it faced. But he should be on the list for nixing pursuing the Prince of Wales after sinking the Hood. She was down to one functional gun and would have been easy prey. Even Hitler questioned that decision. (So he could be right once in a while). warspite1 Well given that arguably the biggest single factor in Bismarck getting sunk was Lutjens decision to break radio silence after she'd shaken off her pursuers, that Bismarck was sunk can largely be placed at his door. The odds actually weren't that great. The British capital ships were running out of fuel, and iirc, were heading the wrong way. But for Lutjens' ridiculous decision there is every chance Bismarck would have been home in time for tea and medals. quote:

If every Admiral who lost was a bad Admiral, can we really consider any Admiral a good Admiral? warspite1 Not necessarily. Gamelin was a total arsehead but Manstein, Guderian and co still get the kudos for Case Yellow.
