I've been playing around with seeing what CMANO can do beyond the typical 24 hour tactical scenario. The biggest problem I've found trying to go larger is that the enemy AI tends to fall apart after the initial wave of attacks (I'm sure everyone has experienced this at some point). However, I have now managed to construct a 10 day long operational level scenario that gets around this problem - by not having an enemy.

Race West is a pure logistics scenario that challenges the player to deploy a full carrier strike group nearly 6000nm from San Diego to the Western Pacific, picking up reinforcements along the way, in under 10 days. There are no enemies to fight, merely a race against the clock, balancing speed against fuel consumption.

Try it out, tell me what you think, and post your best time and strategy.

Well that was interesting - quick as well. Good idea.

The scoring doesn't seem to be working. The events appear to be set up OK but the ships probably entered when I was on a high compression and something went wrong. That sometimes happens so a caution to the player to drop the compression as the ships enter may be in order.

The Carrier and Perl Harbor group arrived with 2 days and 2 hours left to go but the rest from San Diego were lagging quite a bit. I wasn't paying enough attention.

To make it more interesting, you could have the CVW at NAS Lemoore in various states of readiness. You may also want to have USAF squadrons deploying to Japan with tankers on the west coast, pearl, Alaska, Guam and Japan. One or two ships already at sea that need to link up perhaps. Maybe an SSN near Australia.

Some form of threat will make the player a bit more cautious. Perhaps an AGI lurking, a sub, some biologics, marauding Bears etc. I had the carrier cranked up to 35 Knts until it caught up with the two ships from Perl - probably unrealistic in a potential threat environment.

Thanks.

Could you describe what happened with the scoring? The way I meant to set it up was 1 point for each CVN/CG/DDG to enter the area, with the scenario ending at 7 points.

You ran the CVN solo to Pearl and then used the ships there for escorts? Interesting, and probably a valid choice given that this is not meant to be a wartime scenario and getting the CVN on station should be the priority.

I actually had a CVW in the original setup but I decided it didn't really add much since the focus was on the ships.

Thanks for trying it and giving your thoughts, it's sort of a trial balloon to see if there is interest in other more logistics focused scenarios (although future ones would probably involve at least some enemies).

Yeah, no score was recorded whatsoever. I saw the way you had the scoring set up and it looked OK to me, but no scores were recorded. I suspect what happened was that I was on 30 min compression and the ships entering the zone were not picked up by the game.

I actually ran the Carrier on a straight course to the objective and estimated where the ships from Pearl would intercept - around 160E, cannot remember the northings. So the carrier was on its own for about 80% of the way, and the ships from Pearl cruised NW at 20 Knts and they RV'd within about 20 miles of each other. The Oiler from Guam also linked up at that same spot but I sent it NE from there to meet the ships steaming from the coast. That whole group was about 2 days away from the objective at scenario end.
