Deleting GAM Files - 8/13/2019 5:32:37 PM

Volume 2 of WiF on page 209, first column, second paragraph, mentions the enormous size of GAM files. It further states that it might be wise to periodically delete files that are no longer needed.

All my GAM files are listed in the Restore a Saved Game window via the auto save function. However, the options displayed in the Restore a Saved Game window doesn't include a delete button.

How can these files be deleted?

Any help or guidance will be appreciated.

Sincerely,

zed1949

The files shown are in: "C:\Matrix Games\World in Flames\Scenarios\Global War\Saved Games" - example is for Global War, and this assumes you installed the game on your C drive.

Use file explorer to find them in the \Matrix Games\World in Flames\Scenarios directories and manually delete the ones you no longer want. The Saved Games folder also contains autosave folders but those files get constantly overwritten, so don't bother with them and don't delete the Autosave folders.

Agreed. Unless you are seriously constrained and just want to temporarily save the space, there is not any point deleting them.

Keep in mind that there is a separate folder for each scenario and different naming convention for each mode of play (Netplay vs others) that will result in additional files.

However, if you play the same scenario using the same mode all the time, it is best to leave them alone.

I also save a game for my Netplay sessions to share with the other players for review between games and to keep track of progress from session to session.

I also like to save a copy of games for each turn or when there are strange results or important decision points in case I want to replay an earlier situation.

Paul and David,

Thank you very much!

I followed your instructions while doing a dry run and now I understand the process.

Take care and the Best to you both,

Al (zed1949)

I have run into a problem deleting GAM files. Maybe I am missing something...

I go into the path C:\Program Files (x86)\Matrix Games\World in Flames\Scenarios\Global War\Saved Games to look for saved games I have created; however, the only game I see is the Fast Start game. But when I browse via the restore game from within MWIF, I see the games I have saved in that folder. As those files, I presume, also have a GAM file type, they should be visible to delete.

Am I looking in the wrong folder?

Oddly, when I look in the Autosave folder, there are no games visible in that or any subfolders, although they are viewable from the ingame browser for restoring games.

Perhaps you have two installs of MWIF. Confirm the EXE you are clicking on to start is in the same folder structure

Also perhaps you are playing a scenario different than Global War.

Or maybe when you save files you are saving them to a completely different directory. Go in game and attempt to save your game at any point and see which directory MWIF opens to save the file into. Make sure that’s the same place you’re looking in Win Explorer

The program is expecting the save file path to be: "C:\Matrix Games\World in Flames\Scenarios\Global War\Saved Games" (that is, if the program is on the C Drive). Check to see if you have a Matrix Games folder in the same directory where you see the folder Program Files(x86). That's where your saves will be. The program likely created that path the first time you saved a game.

If you have a game open then click on "Save As" and look at the dialog box that comes up. Click on the down arrow to the right of where it says "Saved Games" at the top of the dialog box and you will see the file path to the Saved Games folder.

Oddly, I searched my c drive and the file(s) were in:

C:\Users\User\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files (x86)\Matrix Games\World in Flames\Scenarios\Global War\Saved Games

The executable and other game files (other than saves) were in the normal area as you specified, but the saves are going to the above address. When I used save as box et.al. the file path came up as it ought to, but the saves go into the folder specified in this post.

Anyhow, I was able to delete them from the above folder.

I wonder if that's a BootCamp thing. Are you using a Mac? I had the same problem. Thanks for posting the fix!

If you are running v3.0.2 or v3.2.0. The saved games are stored under C:\Users\yourusername\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files (x86)\Matrix Games\World in Flames\Scenarios\Barbarossa\Saved Games.

If you are running either of these versions, that's where they are kept. Probably the same for additional versions as well.

The program provides the player with the ability to change the autosave folder (i.e., the directory).

From the Main form, use the drop down menu list File. It has a menu item that lets you define the Autosave folder.
