Status: offline 		So I started off with a primary attack of Pearl Harbor just to keep things simple and straight-forward. The midget subs started things off with a torpedo hit on both the California and the Maryland. None of my midgets made it out of the harbor and safely back to the mother sub.

KB drove down from the NW and launched with total surprise. There were no allied flights - totally uncontested. KB consists of 5 CV and 1 CVL in this mod. All of my fighter groups were split into thirds with a third on escort, a third on CAP, and a third on Sweep. The dive bombers were assigned to strike the airfields of PH with the hope of doing enough damage to enable a day-2 strike of the port. And the TB were assigned the port strike. What I failed to do was put some of my FP on Recon to get better intel of the strike results. As you can see, the reports of damaged/destroyed AC are way out of kilter.

I also went after the port of Manila in the PI. Everything went off without a hitch, fighter Sweeps followed mostly by bombers with fighter escort. Again this was complete surprise as there were no allied flights. This was not a strike to write home about as I saved most of my air strikes in the region to strike at the French in Kwangchowan, China.

Kwangchowan received a lot of attention as the base starts out loaded with enemy fighters. I really don't want to have that base flapping at my back door so I went heavy for Sweeps plus well-escorted bombing runs to shut down the airfields. Again the Sweeps went in first followed by the bombing runs. The Kwangchowan CAP is around 10k while my sweeps are coming in at 15k. My bombing runs came in at 8k and 6k.

My amphibious assaults plus a lot of support action from air and sea were focused on Kota Bharu, Miri, and Batan Island. Batan fell on the first turn. And in China there's the whole first few turns to clear the railways and push the Chinese troops back thing going on.

Status: offline 		So I continue to bombard Kota Bharu while landing troops.

At Pearl Harbor I do get in that second day of attacks but there really wasn't much meat on the bone. And Bill's sub, the Plunger, plunged a torpedo into my AO Nippon Maru. In the end, I don't think I came out much ahead at PH.

I wonder why some TB fly with 800kg SAP and others with 250kg SAPs? It wasn't a range thing…

Over Manila I got lucky; I had a couple of medium bomber groups attack the AF w/o fighter escort. I received very light losses. His fighters were all around 15k and my bombers came in at 6k. I had this really sad day time surface engagement - my two CL VS two allied DD near Cam Ranh Bay (ships fleeing Hong Kong). There was a lot of shooting. There were lots of torpedoes launched. There were a lot of misses. End result: each of my CL took two light hits that did little damage and I got in one light hit on one of the Bill's DDs. It was sad.

So for my ground troops:
-- I captured Makin!
-- I reduced forts from 3 to 1 at Miri.
-- And I reduced forts to 1 at Kota Bharu.

And in other news:
Itbayat Island is occupied by the Japanese
PT-41 is reported to have been sunk near Manila on Dec 07, 1941

Yup - the CL TF was already in play but I've got it headed to Cam Ranh Bay. Maybe a day or two in the shop, add a few DD and a CA plus go through the leaders. Then out to look for trouble. :-)

I was thinking some kind of random dice roll\check had to be made per air unit. The same with torpedoes. I've still got a couple of CV with their full load after the 2nd strike. I'm wondering if it's a task force leadership check or if it's per ship captain? I guess it's another reason to put my nose in the manual - right?

Status: offline 		John Heim the designer of the recent board game from Legacy called Air Raid Pearl harbor had this to say about the weapons used during the PH attack and how that guided his design for that aspect of the game:

The Akagi, Kaga, Soryu, and Hiryu between them carried 100 modified Type 91 torpedoes and used 40 in the first strike. The number of Type 99 Mark 5 800 kg armor-piercing bombs is indeterminate but they were said to be in very short supply (probably 50 were used). Thus, I allow the third strike to carry another round of torpedoes by the torpedo bomber specialists surviving the first attack but the level-bombing Kates use the Type 99 Ordinary 250 kg bomb in lieu of armor piercing ordnance.

mmm - the DL part makes sense; everything seems to be tied to that somehow. And I forgot to use any air groups set to recon PH on the December 7 attack.

Often I forget simple settings that I know and want to use. Rushing about the map to input orders is an easy way to have something bite me in my butt.

I like the historical references tied into Mr. Heim's design process. I think this game is a little more abstract though - with so many variables tied in to the logic process in order to bake in a random factor. There are parts of this game that frustrate me with the random factor - like coordination of flight groups from the same base.

In the ordnance assignment for that 2nd PH strike I was just thinking that with all of those BB there, the flight crews would have packed on torpedoes first, followed by those 800 Kg SAPs if torpedoes ran out. And only 250 Kg ombs if there was nothing else. You know - in my version of "real life". But this is a game and I take it for what it is. It's still loads of fun for me to play.

Status: offline 		You dont need recon PH prior the strike. The best results I've seen on PH strike were with historical 1st turn ON and there is no group set to recon. However all Vals are set to 10% search. Personality I think most of the poor results are when people put all planes on strike and none to search.

For the 800kg, average unit experience must be 70+ I think to use it.

In the second wave, the Vals and Kates switched roles. The Vals went after ships in the harbor, while the Kates went after air bases.

With all of the smoke in the harbor, the Japanese needed the pin-point accuracy of dive bombing to attack the remaining ships. To attack ships, the Vals used a penetrating bomb, the Type 99 “ordinary” bomb. Here, “ordinary” means that the bomb was designed for the role that carrier dive bombers were created to carry out—destroying ships.

Vals with Type 99 ordinary bombs were able to hit ships in dry dock, including the battleship Pennsylvania. However, a large fraction of the Vals went after the Nevada, which had managed to get underway. Overall, the Val attacks of the second wave did far less ship damage than the Kates of the first wave.

This left the Kates free to attack the airfields. Dropping bombs from high altitudes would not give high accuracy, but Kates could carry much heavier bomb loads than Vals. Many of the Kates in the second wave carried two of the 250 kg (551 pound) Type 98 land bombs that Vals dropped singly in the first wave. Others carried another type of bomb, the smaller 60 kg (132 pound) Type 97 land bomb, usually along with one or two Type 98s.

Vals could carry also two Type 97 bombs–one under each wing. However, there is no evidence that they did so in either wave of the Pearl Harbor attack. Pictures of “stuff” under Val wings during the attack only showed the Val’s unique dive brakes

I agree that the historical T1 seems one of the better on average. I was hoping to get the AF damaged enough on attacking the AF @ PH on DEC 7 and that worked. I think if I'd have got recon in on turn 1 I might have had better load-outs for my TBs when I hit PH on DEC 8th. The nice thing about being so aggressive on the AF is that I did a pretty good job whittling down on his search aircraft already on the board.

I've a lot of subs pushing out into the normal routes the allies use when fleeing Hong Kong and the Philippines. Those subs are seeing good action.

Status: offline 		So I have this screwed-up invasion of Manado going on. I had bombardment and air support there. My amphibious TF kind of ran into fleeing TFs and ran this-a-way and that… What a sad endeavor this is… I'm re-routing TFs to another base I'm assaulting - Sorong.
Vindicators… Bill has Vindicators… Did you know they have a range of 8 and 10 with drop tanks? Grumble-grumble. One of my carrier groups was a little too close to Davao… The CV Chiho took a bomb but my carrier got away with only a love-tap. Damage 12/3/3/0. She's still flying aircraft so I'm good for now. I always get a bit of a pucker factor when I see allied aircraft attacking my toys. Especially when you see that message that says fuel explosion…

Fuel storage explosion on CV Chiho

There's still a bit of pushing/shoving going on in the waters of the northern Philippines but I think I'm clearing things out with small SCTFs of DDs and DD/CL combos. I've got a heavy SCTF en route just in case Bill wants to dance with big-boyz. Next turn should see the beginning of my PI assault with amphibious operations targeted for Aparri.

Bill seems to be experimenting with B-17s flying night attacks at Formosa. I've got the Kwangchowan AF subdued so I'm gathering air support and fighters for the PI campaign. This is gunna be fun. I bought out the 7th Division from Hokkaido and will add it to the PI operations. I'm under the belief that in this mod you can never have too many divisions for an assault.

There's still a lot of sub action going on. I've got a lot of subs and Bill has a lot of merchant and naval shipping that he wants to move out. It's a nice relationship. :-)
I'll say this though - I really-really dislike those Dutch subs…

In China I'm still sorting things out. The first step is a combo of clearing the rail lines and moving garrison units to bases that need to be garrisoned. Clickity-click-click.

I've got my troops into Hong Kong. I did a bombardment to check out what he has there. Next to nothing. My Hong Kong force starts out greatly augmented as they have two divisions, an infantry regiment plus engineers and those 8 arty units.

So I was reading Bill's AAR (as short as it was) of his game with WingCmdr. In that game he was playing the allies and he opinioned (and I'm paraphrasing here) that Burma sucked with sucky troops in sucky bases and that he'd instead concentrate on India. I wonder if he'll do the same VS me? I guess I'll find out.
Another note for those that chose to follow the exciting adventures of the Japanese side within the Focus in the Pacific Mod is that I'm working to get Bill 3-4 turns per week. He's retired - I'm gainfully employed with intent to remain in the work force for another 8 years or so as I'm still somewhat of a young pup in my mid-2-late 50s.

Air Operations
So my initial plans are to use Chiang Mai as my primary base for air operations.

To that end I've sent several engineer units, both construction and air support, along with three AA units. I'm working to build the base up quickly to level 2 so I can start operation other than CAP. :-)

I've also bumped my required supplies up to 1267 to keep a reasonable supply at the base for my projects. I'll gradually increase my local supplies once I get a regular convoy system running from Bangkok to Cam Ranh Bay (and another run from Japan to Cam Ranh Bay).

Bangkok starts out with a level 4 airfield. I've got that ramping up also. Since it's the easiest location for me at the present to maintain enough air support and supplies to field air operations and replace lost aircraft, I'll be flying most of my air support missions from here at the beginning of my Burmese operations.

Ground Operations
For ground forces in my Burma campaign , I'll utilize the Royal Thai Army and the 15th and 21st Armies, all three of which fall under the umbrella of the Southern Army. Additional units of the Southern Army will tag along as I get my assignments in order.

So the 15th Army starts out with a pair of divisions, one of which (the 55th Div.) carries the tag "Some assembly required." I wish one of Japan's divisional commanders was named Michael O'Neal, a favorite character on a book series that I enjoy. Sadly, there are no Amaricinzed names on Japan's roster of officers. Anyway - the Double-Nickle is scattered about in Bangkok and I hope to reform it when all of the components arrive in Moulmein. Of not on 11DEC41 is that one component of the Double-Nickle is the I/143rd Infantry Bn., which is currently at Victoria Point, so it will be the first unit of the soon-2-B-famous 55th Division.

The 21st Army consists of a pair of divisions, the 4th and 5th Guards Divs., both of which start the game at Cam Ranh Bay. They are currently making their way by ground to Phnom Penh and, once in that thriving metropolis, will use the sophisticated rail systems of Indochina and Thailand to advance up north to Pisanuloke.

So the last ground force to cover is that of the Royal Thai Army. I start out with the same under-strength six divisions that are the norm for the Thai forces but I also have an armored division… Bwa-ha-ha-ha! Consisting of cavalry, and armored cars along with a few mortar and AT Gun squads, this mechanized division is sure to fear into the hearts of the Burmese and allied forces desperately trying to prevent Imperial Japan from the oil fields of Magwe, the product of which should go towards efforts to build and strengthen the Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere. I mean, it only makes sense - right?

Along the northern end of the PI Bill has subs lurking. It's a good hunting area but his torpedoes suck for the most part and I've a few DD TFs that cuck depth charges at them. It sucks to be a submariner assigned to that coastline, what with the shallow waters and all. I would note that one of his subs, the S-40, taps two into the flank of the CL Tama.

I'm still pounding Kwangchowan to keep the AF down. I'm also attacking several of Bill's ground units in China.

Bill attacks Miri from the air. I already have an air unit of Zeroes here. The oil fields take a few hits but my fighters did engage so I think I'm OK as long as Bill doesn't run 40 bomber groups at Miri per turn.

My amphibious landing operations take place later in the day at Aparri in Northern PI.

I'm working on a long-term battle plan and I really want to achieve my goals prior to the end of 1943. My WAG is that by mid 1943 Bill's naval forces are just going to be too much for me to go deep without strong bases that can help provide LRCAP for my naval forces. In essence, Bill will be able to out-build me around 5-1 in carriers.

So Japan has the landing bonus for until May. The last time I did an amphibious landing with a division of troops without the bonus, my troops were pretty much slaughtered. I seem to remember Nemo121 using a lot of smaller xAKs for amphibious landings.

Is that the way to go? Do you do something different for the large-scale amphibious assaults? If you've got something down that works well would you do me the favor of posting your solution?

Status: offline 		Land part of the unit first, then the rest are reinforcements and may not get the amount of disruption. As always, have a cargo ship or two with nothing but supplies to make sure that there are enough on the beach. Use AKs and especially LSDs for tanks. For tank units, strip out the soft devices by using air transport and/or APDs.

I like the thought of adding a spare ship for supplies - I normally don't do that. Thanks for the thoughts.

Status: offline 		The Amphibious Assault of Guam begins on the 12th of December. Bill's coastal guns brutally savage the Matsue Maru. Five 155mm shells rip through her thin frame. Heavy fires and thick smoke obscure the damage done to her body as she lists ominously to port… Eventually the Matsue slips beneath the waves.

In the end though, the goal is accomplished. The 44th Infantry Division and the 15th Base Force, for the most part, have landed and dug in as they prepare to advance upon the besieged allied defenders.

Later a bombardment TF arrives to pave the way for the amphibious assault troops; four massive Battleships with escorts pound the airfield, port, and allied troops.

Near Bandjermasin the I-158 slaps a torpedo into the flank of the TK Gertrude Kellogg; she was already limping heavily from a previous engagement with the submarines of Imperial Japan prior to the attack of the I-158.

Many miles to the West at Sorong, the amphibious assault continues without respite. Additional troops land upon the shore and scramble forward towards cover, beating hearts and cold sweat acknowledging their naked fear as they cross the open sands…

In open seas near Howland Isle, Captain Yakimi steps away from the periscope to rub the sweat from his eyes before stepping back to grab the periscope and peer through the eye piece. A Carrier - the Lexington? - accompanied by a pair of destroyers! The destroyers are already turning toward the I-17, lookouts having spotted the tell-tale wake of the periscope.
Yakami quickly reads off the numbers and a firing solution is quickly calculated. The I-17 fires six torpedoes just as fast as the crew can make them ready. There's no time to watch - the destroyers are nearly upon them! Dive! Dive! Dive! - and the bow pushes down as the I-17 dives deep beneath the waves. Above the DDs Flusser and Porter attack with their depth charges but they are way off target.
Yakimi clutches the stop watch as the hands tick away to the expected time of a successful solution. Nothing! It was apparent that the I-17 too was way off target…

From Bangkok with love, bombers with fighter escorts attacked the airfields of Port Blair in several waves. From 8 thousand feet Sallys and Bettys made their bombing runs, peppering the runway and airbase with 250 kg GP bombs.

At Hong Kong air strikes from Samah, Canton, and Takao pound the allied troops and the airfield as they try to soften up the enemy prior to another deliberate attack from the two divisions and support troops already engaged with the enemy troops.
Later, during the day, Japan attacks Hong Kong again, reducing the forts to level 2.

Near Iwo-jima the xAKL Elcano plies the seas in her desperate attempt to escape from the Japanese forces in and around the Philippines. It must have been a bitter pill to swallow for the good captain and crew as Bettys from the direction of the Marianas Islands make their attack runs. The Elcano is too old and too slow to dodge the attacking Bettys. The Bettys fly back home, the Elcano left listing and burning furiously from a pair of 250 kg SAP bombs.

War is not one-sided; there is ying with the yang. Vildebeests attack the DD Yugakaze near San Fernando. Three hits with 500 lb. GP bombs are too much for the plucky destroyer and her crew. Shortly after the attack the Yugakaze succumbs to the waves…

Status: offline 		Bomb and bombard first, then invade. From what I read, you bombarded after the invasion. Also, include heavy ships in your invasion fleet as the CD guns will engage them plus the heavy ships will engage the CD guns.

Status: offline 		At Puerto Princesa I bombard just to confirm what's there.

At Sorong we capture the base; the Sorong Detachment Base Force flees in terror from the might of the Imperial Japanese forces. Bwa-ha-ha-ha!

At Kweisui I get 1 to 1 odds but I ran into a stack about twice the size of mine. I guess that show the mettle of the Chinese forces there. I'm bringing a bigger stick; it should arrive in 3-4 turns.

Near Kaifeng I attack a pair of Chinese Corps with the 32nd Div. They retreat in disarray.

At Hong Kong the Forts are reduced to 1. A third division arrives so another deliberate attack is scheduled for the 14th.

Near Rangoon a unit of Lilys finds a couple of enemy merchant ships and drops an egg or two on them. One ship is on fire and the other has heavy fires and heavy damage. My Lilly used 100 kg SAP bombs.

I get in some more good sub action catching merchant shipping near Bandjermasin and Rabaul.

Near Sorong one of Bill's subs catches the AKL Higari Maru in some surface action. The Higari takes 11 shells and has raging fires…

In other exciting news:

xAKL Latouche is reported to have been sunk near Bandjermasin on Dec 13, 1941
xAKL Sarangami is reported to have been sunk near Agrihan on Dec 13, 1941

Of note in the turn:
Bill stacked about 5 subs in a row next to Babeldaob. I set three FP units to fly naval Search (Day/night). I have a DB unit flying naval attack. And I have a 3DD ASW TF that's patrol is right over those subs. They are in blue waters but I'm kinda curious to see how things go with all of the DL modifiers I expect to generate.

Status: offline 		Put some FP or other air ASW at 100 or 1000 feet and see what happens. They might not see the sub on the surface, but if they do the sub has almost no chance to dive.

Guam forts are reduced to 1 this turn.

Laoag should fall next turn as its undefended. Puerto Princesa should fall too.

Other than that, there's not too much news. I've getting my Search network up. There are a few enemy TF fleeing past Marcus isle that I see. I've routed a pair of SCTF into those waters.

In China, Burma, and Malaya I've got a lot of troops moving around the map in support of military objectives.

In Malaya I have 7 divisions that I'll be using for Singapore. The 3rd Air Div. Air HQ unit is almost at Kota Bharu. This is a cool air HQ as it has a radius of 4. Alor Star, Georgetown, and Taiping all have AFs in the level 3-4 range so I will be able to fly out of any of those base with torpedoes.

In Burma I'm using the Thai Army plus the 15th Army. Chiang Mai is almost at level 2 for the airfield. That makes a swell 4ward location for air ops VS Rangoon and the Burmese bases closer to their southern side.

I've got my initial airframes figured out but I'm still doing some hemming and hawwing on R&D.
