UPDATE: Uploaded corrected scenario with Soviet units assigned to missions.

Hello again everyone. I've got a somewhat rough beta of a new scenario of mine here to share.

It's based on the events of the book "When Angels Wept: A What-If History of the Cuban Missile Crisis" by Eric G. Swedin. https://www.amazon.com/When-Angels-Wept-What-If-History/dp/1597975176

In the scenario description i provide a summary of the events that led to war, but also a disclaimer in-case you want to read the book and avoid spoilers. You need not have read the book to play the scenario.

The scenario is essentially a combat mopping up operation in the Central Pacific two weeks after the war, you have to find and finish off some surviving soviet ships and subs. Primarily Anti-Submarine Warfare.

I post this scenario knowing fully that it could have issues. I've allotted the player two days for the scenario, I hope that is enough.

Additionally, I am not very capable with events and scoring at this stage, so I only made the scoring very basic (Sink Soviet ships/subs for points; victory comes from sinking them all; no penalty for own losses at this stage)

Any seasoned scenario builders, I welcome you to have a look 'under the hood' at the workings after you give it a try any offer some advice/suggestions.

The name implies that this scenario begins after Chapter 8 "Angels wheep, the fire comes"?

The idea for this scenario came from a subsection of that chapter titled "Hunting Submarines", specifically the section:

quote:

In the month following the Fire, American antisubmarine forces vigorously hunted the Soviet submarines that had surged from their ports on the night the Fire began. Some of the Soviet vessels carried ballistic missiles, others carried cruise missiles, and some had nuclear torpedoes. Navies from NATO countries and other allied countries also contributed warships and aircraft, flying out of devastated homelands, determined to get their own licks in.

I doubt Australia would have had any Soviet warheads targeted at their country, but I think the Royal Australian Navy would have joined the effort in the Pacific.

It's been several days since I posted, this, and with 13 downloads, i'm kind of surprised that there's been no comments.

What i like is Swedin's documentary writing style (have read the first pages on "inside ebooks"/amazon). Maybe i pick up the book, maybe.

I highly recommend it. I'm a bit of a Cuban Missile Crisis geek, and I do get a little irritated at what if?s of the crisis that are not plausible. But this one is very well written.

I gave it a try, the enemy side units are not on any missions, though you have a couple missions setup, seems like they should be on a mission of some sort. I sank some of the units but not all.

Since they were not on a mission they just sat there.

After adding them to their missions I think I would move the blue units a little closer so it is more condensed? with so few units I would prefer to get it over with a little quicker. I would also prefer some sort of enemy surface group, more fun that way and they could protect the subs a bit maybe. I suppose that is not in the book though. Just my 2 cents.

First, Thank you for pointing out the Soviet forces not being assigned to their missions. I could have sworn that I did do that. I've uploaded a corrected scenario with that fixed.

This scenario is not intended to be a quick one. It's about the struggle and frustration to find remaining Soviet subs after Nuclear War.

As for Soviet Surface Forces, I didn't add anything other than the Sub Tender and the AGI because I believe that by 15 days after the war, US Forces would have destroyed or forced to surrender the entire Soviet surface fleet, given that it wasn't that large in 1962.

I didn't have much luck with finding stuff with sonar - I didn't even get a hit on the bios. I wonder if the bios only are important after a certain year when the sonar is better and the subs quieter?

Also, the tenders had guns but never shot at my AC - I think you should loosen their WRA so they shoot at anything that is not friendly (Air and maybe surface?). Could also use a neutral fishing boat or two? I could not identify the SSV for some reason so I just killed it. If there were other neutral units with a penalty I might have treated it differently. Not sure why I could not identify it - I flew over it multiple times at 2k ft.

Hmm, good point. I added the Biologics for realism, but I wonder if it is worth it to remove them or massively reduce their number. I'd like some more input on this from others.

I can do that for the tender. I did a playtest today with the corrected version, and my Sea Furys did take some AAA fire, but were not in danger.

Perhaps the cloud cover is too much? I tried to select a weather setting to account for thick smoke/residue from the nuclear war having spread into the equatorial regions.

I could add a few neutral fishing boats, but the thing is, the larger situation in the scenario probably would be pretty tolerant of accidentally sinking one trawler in the effort to finish of surviving Soviet naval vessels.
