Some questions about mines and minefields: 1) Is there any way to stop your engineers from clearing your own minefields. I've made this mistake once or twice using build points to lay minefields during deployment, then placing engineers adjacent to really ruin someones day coming through. Then turn after turn they busily go about removing their minefield (other capable units do this too). It's aggravating, especially when the AI places its units adjacent and it doesn't seem to do the same mistake. As a corollary question, how do you have engineers place mines during play? I've seen that mentioned in threads but don't get the mechanics of it.
2) I've also read about clearing minefields using flamethrowers. I understand using z key into hex, but is this all? I mean, I don't think you get the usual x number of mines cleared message, so do you need to send in the conscripts to march firmly and check it out?
3) Just to check...are mines cleared faster by units being IN the hex with them or adjacent (or is it about the same)? Thanks

Hello

Select you engineer unit and go into the info screen...where you see all it's ammo and weapon stats and like. You'll notice a line 'clear mines in front of unit'. Click that text and it'll change into 'will not clear mines in front of unit' or 'Will place mines in front of unit', depending how many times you click :)

The clearing minefields with flamers is the same as clearing fields with any large explosive, like 100+mm arty. Those explosions will reveal the field and clear it some, but as your engineers didn't hand-pick those mines it would be rather uncertain how many mines actually exploded, right?

Well, normal units of course clear only in the hex, but for engineers there afaik shouldn't be any difference.

tmac,

1) Welcome to the forum. :D

2) Voriax is spot on target. Also, remember that mines are cleared faster if you have many engineers facing the same hex, alternatively stacking units to clear it.

I think it was VikingNo2 (a legend in his own right) who taught me this:

Don't worry so much about minefields. If you have an engineer in the mined hex (and of course the hex has been spotted as mined), then other units may pass through that hex with a reduced chance of setting off the mines. Now, of course it's not as safe as clearing the hex, but sometimes you just don't have that kind of time.

blade tanks will also detect mines and clear them but slowly. dont get fooled into thinking that just because a squad or jeep or light vehicle went through a hex that your tanks will breeze right through. ive been burned on that one before.
move engineers forward till they find em then pile them on. this game teaches u patience eventually. well maybe
