Well, sometimes ship captains just won't keep formation.

Case in point: Playing a scenario, "Black Tigers V" for the past few days. As my CSG is closing in on the Strait of Hormuz, my fleet is under attack by SSMs. For reasons I cannot explain, two of the three CGs decide to break away from formation and sail to the southwest at flank speed to engage incoming missiles, while the rest of the formation continues to sail north. I never gave to order to detach from the formation, and the ships will not return to the formation regardless of my orders. If they continue on their path, they will ground themselves into the eastern coast of Oman.

NEVER seen this before. So, what to do besides curse and play on?

It's actually a good thing for independent ships to break formation.

In a similar situation, a formations was under an attack from an incoming torpedo. The entire group turned and headed in a different direction to avoid the incoming weapon. When the torpedo neared, it was obvious which ship had been targeted. As the others continued on their own evasion course, the targeted ship broke away, on its own, increased its speed to the max, and attempted to outrun the incoming torpedo.

So, I believe that your ships were intentionally programmed to act as they did.

Ships will break formation from time to time, for a number of reasons - e.g. an inexperienced officer has the con, as well as in an action where survival is at stake, as in the examples above.

Convoy scattering is another cause - a "survival" issue.
