As the ships from the troop convoy sink we also sink two dozen aircraft with them... looks like that's at least one squadron of Airacobras plus a squadron of Mitchells that were bound for Australia...

Here is a list of things that go towards determining if groups are 'grouped' together in the same raid/attack:

Group attack mission is similar to the raid's mission (not a TF and a base attack)

Sweeps, recon and search missions are not used in co-ordination

Escorts need to be at same altitude as raid itself and have the same target to imporve chances

Groups from same base have better chance to fly together; further apart group bases are, lessen the chance

Groups belonging to same theatre command have increased chance; groups in range of their Air Hq are further increased

IJA and IJN groups have a lessen chance to co-ordinate

Group experience and leader's AIR increases chance

Groups need to be within 20% of the raid's speed or time to target for the raid and group within 30 minutes to participate in raid

Escorts targeted to same target as bombers have a better chance than un-target escorts

and this is what makes me think over and over again that the strike routine that came with AE is fully flawed compared to the always working strike routine of WITP... had 85 Zeroes at Lae set to escort, same height as the Vals, 9 hexes range, all great morale and all the other blah blah that doesn't do **** when it comes to strikes and how they look like... if ppl still believe this woodoo after all those years then this is something the forum achieved and the devs can thank the forumites for their myths... 42 highly skilled Vals come in unescorted and get chewed up of course for no gain... two dozen shot down, the rest withdrew... idiotic strike routine and the more strikes you fly a day the more you see of this ridicoulos bullshit... I'm not trying to do a coordinated 1000 bomber night strike 800 miles deep into Germany, I've ordered fighters from Lae to fly with bombers from Lae some 180 miles to Port Moresby and the ****ing idiocy that is called a "strike routine" made none of the fighters take off... this is not a strike routine, this is not some FUBAR that happened, it's just a silly flaw as there would be no way fighter squadrons would say "no, we don't fly with the bombers today" in real life...

So one thing about having you back is that you ACTUALLY look at your results. Its nice to see.

So this is actually what I like most about AE compared to original: you can't get too fancy because bad things will happen.

Even Elliot could not hide some of the terrible mishaps on the part of the USN in the early war. Comms frequently went down. Disparate units did launch and got creamed because of it. The Brits and Germans both suffered badly from this in the BoB … and be sure that Lae is nothing even close to England and France in terms of infrastructure.

So your outcome here, while far from desired, is entirely possible. And if you do it often enough, possible becomes probable. Yes, in original WITP this would work almost always. But we know that specifically this was completely re-done and I feel it much better represents the realities of 1942.

I once asked the devs if the coordination routine improved over the course of the war due to technology AND process improvements. I got a "NULL" answer. I've always suspected that it does, but proving it without access to the code is a long shot.

Anyway, keep up the 'rants'. Great having you back!

+1

The specific messages and reports in the game have to be looked at as metaphors for the reasons of the outcomes depicted.

Nah guys. We have a level 4 airfield, 48 Vals and 45 Zeroes ordered to attack a naval target at a base 180 miles away. Orders are given and when the bombers take off in the morning (actually the Zeroes would launch first due to their higher range) the Zeroes stay at the airfield while the pilots drink Sake. This didn't happen, it's just utter BS. Again, I'm not talking about some xy coordination of 1000 bombers/fighters going from several airfields to bomb England or Germany during the night, I'm talking about this nilly willy die roll BS that makes it look like as if there would be some routine with rational settings behind it.

(Including Yaab's notes from Michael)

1. Generally, no. Fighters always launched last to give them max time at target with full "tit" as the yanks used to say (full boost). It also gave clear air for bombers to form up. Finally fighters can more easily close the gap.
2. Generally the two formations flew at different altitudes, fighters above. In any case, they generally had different leadership.
3. 180 miles is about 2 hours flight time. Well within range, but 2 hours is plenty of time for bad things.
3. Radios were not great and radio silence rules were extreme for good reason. Radar was very primitive for everyone, but radio direction triangulation was both well known, but also well used. Everyone knew that using your radio meant the enemy would know what and where you were.
4. Clouds and/or squalls enroute were probable. 10,000 feet does not put you above, it puts you in. You have to fly around. Val's go left, fighters go right … That simple.

Frustrating. But it happened time and again.

Referring to BoB, the brits had fighters miss attacking units repeatedly .. they ended up wrong place/wrong time. Literally. Flying over land that they knew and they still got to the wrong place. Not talking about coordinating hundreds of planes, just trying to get one group to one place. That was lower England, one of the most industrialized areas in the world in 1941. The best radios, the best radar of the era. The game engine now better accounts for both radio and weather impact upon the ability to coordinate.

If you still have doubts, you should read NTSB reports from 2015-2018 - 75 years later small aircraft now, but of the same size as then have all the same issues as then with the same bad outcomes.

Zeroes got twice the range as the Vals.

And with all respect, NO it did not happen that a squadron ordered to fly just didn't fly because of a die roll. It wasn't fail of coordination, they just didn't take off, from the same airfield the Vals came. OMG, come on guys, don't try to find some obscure excuses for a flaw in the game.

The fighters DID NOT LAUNCH AT ALL, they accumulated 0 fatigue. They just failed to fly in game terms, that's just utter stupid.

8 yo thread? At least I remember the nickname of the guy that thought he would know everything about coordination (LoBaron) and still his strikes never looked different than from anyone else. So many things in there proven wrong again and again, I won't start over fighting this out again. I was fighting for years over the strato sweep thing and was told by a dev how wrong I was until the very moment years later I was told "oh we found something that proves you were right"... I do my rants, I still (or again) play, but I'm not going to fight the same battles I was already on the forum, sure not on 8 yo threads.

Long story short, no matter how long I search for combat reports on the forum, NOONE can show me anything he does that actually works compared to doing ALL wrong and still get the same results. I have looked at several thousand combat reports over al the years and nothing, repeat, nothing has shown me prove that someone knows how to do it "right" when all the examples look the same. And no, a few examples that make it look right isn't prove when there are ten thousand more examples of "it didn't work.

Groups from same base have better chance to fly together; further apart group bases are, lessen the chance

read cuttlefishes notes on it. He was the 'yoda' of it, and no, most players still do not follow his guidelines. They are all consistent applications of Michael's notes.

As for zero fatigue, sure, they didn't launch. They never got the word to launch. radio failure.

radio failure sure, why not find something else? Same airfield, blah blah blah

Val pilot: Don't you guys gonna fly with us?
Zero pilot: No, we failed a die roll you know and it's called radio fail
Val pilot: You know we are going to fly into 100 fighters on CAP that were spotted earlier. Don't you think you should go over to that house at the side of our airfield to ask the air HQ about your orders?
Zero pilot: No, we are just gonna drink Sake now

Vals take off and die over PM

air HQ: OMFG why the hell didn't the Zeroes take off from our airfield?
Zero pilot: we were drinking Sake as we had a radio failure
air HQ: you received your orders at 6pm in that barrack over there
Zero pilot: oh damn, let's find another excuse then. What about bad design?
air HQ: ok, that's fine then

cuttlefish? Seriously? I've read at least one of his AARs and didn't see anything that looked different as this would be so amazing I would have noted it. Anything. Besides this, cuttlefish didn't post full combat reports IIRC.

correct, he did not. but in his last AAR, he wrote out his 'technique' for coordination in detail. It's about 2/3 of the way through the AAR.

we do get a bloody nose at Manila and suffer a division being fully knocked out with 250 disabled combat squads... WOW, the div was 80+ prepped for Manila... that's why I said it would have been so much better to retreat all Allied combat units on Luzon into Manila or Clark as they will put up a stiff resistance but around 500-600 av were destroyed for no gain while the combat units were spread around... lucky me... I'm in no hurry though as I don't really need those troops elsewhere for the next two months and I actually thought the enemy would be running low on supplies already with our constant air attacks over 2 months...

2:1 at Chengchow and acceptable losses spread out over several divisions... next attack should finish the Chinese here which will be quite a disaster for the enemy IMO... we were not that far from a 3:1 which would have most likely saved us another 4-500 disabled squads as we have to attack again...

when our cruisers went in at Rangoon to bombard yesterday we had a message of an Allied convoy evading as our ships were reported to go in and nav search confirmed this later during the day so we have split off some destroyers to move up the river and engage the convoy... we find quite a big target that seems to be loading fuel at Rangoon... quite a dangerous task with halve the IJN sitting nearby and something I don't understand... the convoy was spotted while being at anchor and the destroyers' torps slam into one ship after another... a the end of the engagement only one of the escorts and a single medium sized freighter was left and the destroyers retired...

was amazed we didn't hit yet another mine...

that's one of the amazing things we are discussing up and down... that bombardment TF was spotted yesterday, detection level 9/10 and 81 Nells at the airfield did... nothing... not even tried to launch and fail to find the target, fail to link up or something else... they just did... nothing... twice! Morning phase and afternoon phase... nothing... I took the risk and knew we would suffer some losses on the airfield but if the airfield stays open we get another chance to strike today... and to spoil you right away, this turn the bombers did... nothing... twice, morning and afternoon... nothing...

level 6 airfield, air HQ, ample supply, great weather, all fine... must be radio failure all over the Pacific again...

how would the real IJNAF ever sink Force Z with some 80 bombers flying TOGETHER to a target some 500 miles away and actually hit them? They probably didn't know about the coordination routine of AE and just DID IT...

this really hurts the Chinese as they suffer nearly 1000 combat squads destroyed... all those Chinese units in the South and in the North that are about to be destroyed would be really needed to fend off the Japanese offensives in 42 as I'm trying to achieve a decisive victory in China... as the Allied player I had Chinese Armies of 10k av rolling through China in mid 43 as I was able to bring in enough supplies and even though the Japanese are better equipped they have no chance against the sheer number of Chinese and the insane high assault values... so that's something I want to avoid as the Japanese high command...

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR Feb 24, 42
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Night Time Surface Combat, near Port Blair at 46,58, Range 10,000 Yards

Japanese Ships
CL Tama
CL Kiso
DD Uranami
DD Amagiri
DD Akebono
DD Sazanami
DD Ushio

Allied Ships
KV Auricula, Shell hits 30, and is sunk
KV Jasmine, Shell hits 14, and is sunk
xAP Dilwara, Shell hits 1, Torpedo hits 2, and is sunk
xAP Malda, Shell hits 8, Torpedo hits 1, and is sunk
xAP Talma, Shell hits 6, Torpedo hits 3, and is sunk
xAP Tilawa, Shell hits 6, Torpedo hits 1, and is sunk
AMC Hector, Shell hits 5, Torpedo hits 5, and is sunk

Mundy sticks to his forward defense approach and therefor keeps sending convoys into real dangerous waters... for about two weeks we have spotted the Royal Navy covering Port Blair with heavy units that were withdrawn at some point so we could send in this light squadron to engage enemy shipping there... the Allied convoy was again at anchor when our ships showed up and the static targets were torpedo meat and all ships were sunk in short order for no damage within our ships... we really rack up ship kills, way more than I'm used to at this stage of the war but it's not really an achievement of mine as Mundy is more or less handing over those convoys, I just have to bring some cruisers/destroyers in range...

then the meager rest of the bombers finally manages to come in too, the Oscars tangle with the escorts and 13 Betties drop torps with one hitting Indomitable... no further damage done and out of over 80 bombers we managed to get around a third over the the high value target, halve of the bombers being unescorted... what makes KB (and later on Allied CV deathstars even more) so uber is the inability of launching land based strikes against naval targets... a level 9 airfield is nowhere as much of a threat as 4 or 5 carriers are... Mundy amazes me once more as he moved Indomitable into this position when he was already really lucky with 2 US CV very early off Truk (those were also saved by the inability of launching any kind of decent strike from Truk)... I bet Indomitable was tasked to escort at least one RN BB plus some cruisers into the Rangoon area but Mundy just had to know I would bring in Betties/Nells...

WOW! Now look at this! As KB destroyed an empty tanker convoy around New Caledonia and another convoy with troops aboard to the East we kept moving the carriers further East when they ran into this tanker convoy full of fuel that attempted to evade but was unlucky and was 7 hexes from KB... Vals dropping 60kg bombs would be a death sentence to the fuel loaded tankers already but the Kates also plaster them with 250kg bombs... this hurts, this really hurts Allied capability to move fuel around... no idea why the old light cruiser Concord was in this convoy and in the end she was drawing most of the attacks...

while it was great to see KB hitting that tanker convoy, the more important event was the surrender of the Chinese Army at Chengchow where over 100.000 troops surrender... losing 5000 av that early in the war will not do the Chinese any good, IIRC they receive some 600 combat squads per month and would need the supply to get them into the units so this really is a disaster for Mundy's position in China... no idea why he wanted to defend Chengchow, probably the worst spot in China to stand and fight... we suffered some 1500 disabled squads in the three attacks which means we have still enough combat ready units to stay on the offensive in Northern China... together with the victories in Southern China we have destroyed some 6500 Chinese av plus lots of support squads and guns in February... this with a truce until 1st of February, that's way more than I could dream to achieve in such a short timeframe...

Good going in China and with the KB. You do know that those American CVs and CAs will not be replaced?

The Zero pilots lost money gambling to the Val pilots, this is how they get it back. Seriously, a lot of the Japanese planes did not have radios.

Put your Nells and Bettys at 1000 feet, Naval attack with torpedoes but don't have any or enough torpedoes available. They will then drop a full load of bombs - they will not have reduced the bomb load.

I am sure that this game is good for your blood pressure. Just have a tennis ball to squeeze during the replay . . .

castor troy, what makes you thinks the Vals ane Zeroes are based at the same airfield? The airfield level in the hex can represent several airfields in a given hex, and not one big airfield. In RL, the Port Moresby hex had, AFAIK, nine separate airfields in different locations, all within the boundaries of its hex. Rabaul hex had several individual airfields. Without radio communications between them and air HQ work it is perfectly understandable that one unit flew bombing mission while another probably flew CAP or rested.

A big win at Chengchow, but all of those destroyed Chinese units will reappear at Chungking shortly.
Pretty sure they return at 1/3rd strength for free, so that’ll be nearly 2000 squads you’ll have to re-kill later.

That could be why Mundy is letting you kill them, costing supplies, casualties, and time. If you want to take Chungking, it would be better to isolate them then use them for bombing training targets without destroying them.

The Chinese lost 811 guns in this battle. There is no way the can recoup those losses. Chinese mortars and field arty actually kill Japanese squads in battle. Without guns, the Chinese can only disable the Japanese squads in combat.

WHAT? There was a change that USN CVs won't come back as Essex CVs and CA/CL won't be replaced by Baltimores?

A big win at Chengchow, but all of those destroyed Chinese units will reappear at Chungking shortly.
Pretty sure they return at 1/3rd strength for free, so that’ll be nearly 2000 squads you’ll have to re-kill later.

Yeah they will come back but it will take months to see them reappear and then they still have to be built up and they won't have the needed supply to do so, at least that's the plan.

The Chinese lost 811 guns in this battle. There is no way the can recoup those losses. Chinese mortars and field arty actually kill Japanese squads in battle. Without guns, the Chinese can only disable the Japanese squads in combat.

Yeah, Chinese squads have nearly no firepower but if you mass them together with enough supply you will have insane assault values and can kick around the Japanese just by forcing them to withdraw which always leads to huge losses. Have used the Chinese steamroller quite often in mid 43.

ordered the undergunned Oscars to fly LRCAP to bag some of the Chinese bombers... was surprised to see that many fighters over our IJA troops and we actually down over a dozen enemy bombers... the Hudsons seemed to be not much of a problem for the Oscars but the SB-III were really hard to down, gotta look at their stats, they seem to be way more durable...

I've thought this turn's highlight would be the attack on the two Royal Navy BBs but we also got nav search in the South Pacific reporting lots of enemy shipping near KB... KB was ordered to retire to the North West and ends up nine hexes from Pago Pago where Mundy has parked two old USN BBs plus cruisers and escorts... don't know what to say, KB sweeps the South Pacific and he keeps or moves such a task force within a day's movement of KB on normal speed... due to not expecting any BBs around all my Kates were set to use bombs of course and the first strike scores no less than 46 bomb hits on the two BBs, leaving one heavily burning...

afternoon strike of the Kates was even bigger and in clear weather they heavily hit the USN task force at Pago Pago... both BBs took nearly 50 250kg bombs over the course of the day and both are reported to be heavily burning... was also nice to see those two modern light cruisers being hit... as we are 9 hexes from Pago Pago we have ordered KB to move it's normal distance of 8 hexes to end up next of the island as I hope the BBs won't be able to move further away than 7 hexes which would leave them within torp range tomorrow... due to the air attacks on those ships at Pago Pago the DL of the base also went up to 9/10 and intel reports no less than 30.000 troops, 400+ guns and several hundred vehicles on the island... the base itself is not built up yet but it seems there is at least a division sitting on the island plus lots of support... KB's sweep into the South Pacific yields way better results than I would have ever dreamt of because usually one doesn't kill more than one unlucky convoy that is the first to meet KB as everything else usually is able to disperse and run into all different directions...

AA was quite heavy over the USN BBs at Pago Pago which resulted n 16 Kates lost, including nearly a dozen of our best pilots... that's the price we have to pay and then it's only early 42 and Allied flak is a joke compared to 43 and later... if we are able to sink those two BBs tomorrow I will be well willing to lose even more bombers...

Some of your Kates bomb from 10,000 feet and the rest from 1000 feet. Is that intentional?

Rangoon's airfield and port are targetted by the cruisers again and we disable quite some enemy troops and plaster the base as well... there seem to be only support units left at Rangoon, all combat troops were ordered to Pegu to defend behind the river... the airfield isn't operational anymore so Moulmein's airfield now clearly dominates the area and without enough engineers Rangoon's airfield won't be a threat anytime soon...

first Daitai going in on a sweep at Port Moresby and the result does look horrible in the combat report, losing 5 for only 4 enemy kills... the old story, the Zeroes are so undergunned that 2 out of 3 bursts that hit an enemy fighter only damages it while nearly every hit on a Zero was a kill... probalby two dozen enemy fighters left this engagement damaged...

now look at this! We spotted Queen Elizabeth yesterday already and I just thought WTF and then the ship is still at Pago Pago, obviously unloading troops there... how many times have you seen KB bombing Queen Elizabeth? It's the first time for me actually catching this liner when our Vals put several bombs into the ship which was already hit several times during the search phase... what was more concerning was the fact that we didn't spot any other ships 10 hexes around Pago Pago during the replay so where were the BBs going? Looking at the base during the turn showed the damaged enemy ships sitting at Pago Pago and we ordered KB to nav attack/port attack for next turn, hopefully some 800kg bombs will finish the two BBs... only the Kates will attack as I don't know how heavy the AA is at Pago Pago and I don't want to lose a dozen+ Vals to flak dropping 250kg bombs on the BBs... when 100+ 250kg bombs can't sink CL Java at Soerabaja I can't expect anything from those hits on the USN BBs... would have been interesting to know how high the damage was after 50 bomb hits each yesterday...

no idea why Queen Elizabeth is being used as an amphib task force to bring troops to more or less a frontline base... would only use her for transit from the US to Australia for example...

Some of your Kates bomb from 10,000 feet and the rest from 1000 feet. Is that intentional?

noticed this too, no, it wasn't intentional. No idea why, my eyes must have treated me bad and I misclicked. Usually doesn't happen as I check orders in such situations twice or even more times during a turn.

we still get 3:1 kills on sweeps over Port Moresby which is acceptable even though the goal would be 4:1 but that's not achievable vs the USAAF anymore it seems... the enemy has already lost 226 Warhawks which must really hurt him and we are now working through the pools of the Airacobras...

Aircobras are good down low and if they hit a Zero with a 37mm, what is left?

Good going in China and with the KB. You do know that those American CVs and CAs will not be replaced?

WHAT? There was a change that USN CVs won't come back as Essex CVs and CA/CL won't be replaced by Baltimores?

My understanding that there is a switch for those replacements and it is set to "off" now. You could start the game over with a new scenario with the switch set to "on" and the cruisers aren't just Baltimores but they could be Clevelands as is my understanding.

So now how long does your carrier supremacy last?
