WarPlan looks absolutely fantastic, but so did War in the East and War in the West.

However, for me, those two games were impenetrably complex, and I just couldn't get into them. The interface was majorly non-intuitive, and the level of detail was just overwhelming.

I have been playing board wargames since the 70s, and PC wargames since they existed, so I'm no slouch. But, those two Grigsby games were just too much.

How does WarPlan compare to the Grisby games, please? Is it more accessible?

Thank you in advance for any help with comparisons, differences, etc.

I haven't played the game mind you but I have watched every video on the internet dealing with Warplan and I would safely say that Warplan is much more intuitive and easy to play than one of Grigsby's beasts.

WarPlan was designed so players don't have to struggle with the interface. As the beta testers will say the hard part is the strategy not the interface.

An example is that in WarPlan if you want to attack 3 land units + 1 air on a hex it is 2 clicks.

Left click the main unit, hold shift, right click the defender. Make sure one air unit is in full support mode.

You should find it very easy to use.

That sounds great. But, user interface is just one component of a game. The basic movement and attacking might be easy to perform, but does the game get bogged down in way, way too much of the logistics and organization aspect of the game. Or does it focus more on pushing counters and attacking.

I guess I will watch these videos to see for myself.

In terms of comparison I believe it definitely is.

I have not played the Beta and just saw some Videos. So I write what I deducted. If it is different my apologies.

In Warplan if your 'combat value' is 9 and you attack a 3 strong unit it should be a 3:1 (prolly with due variable for terrain and the like). There is no bazillion of rolls and tests which are sort of unknown to the player to see if other assets are issued, and so on.

That's a prime example - the game IS straightforward, it allows a degree of planning (with the 'die roll' for battles) as any cardboard wargame (as it should be imo).
If you attack across a river, and it is known the river halves your unit, you know of it. Not that there is some obscure test about how your assault units / engineers work and ... uhm ... maybe you halve maybe you don't.

I believe Warplan has potential AND can receive some ulterior layers of complexity - without descending into the abyss of 'bean counting' and playing on game gimmicks that is the current spirit of WITE (or at least that's how I feel, it wins who micromances more and who knows more the ins and outs of the system. A game won or lost out of rule & formula knowledge is not a good game - in my opinion.)

I do not know many things of Warplan but conceptually seems way more straightforward and 'basic' in the -good- sense.

I would say WarPlan is nothing like the WITE. No where near the amount of micro management required to play it.

That is correct. I wanted to get away from min-maxxing which is what Cohen_slith was talking about. The thinking is in planning and strategy.

As many aspects as I could are balanced. You want this positive here is the negative.

The things that add to the game aren't complicated at all. You want to do better vs rivers? Put an engineer specialization on a unit. Simple straight forward.

The games mechanics are easy to learn but this game has a depth that still surprises me after many months of play testing.

There is so much going on under the hood, but you don't need to deal with it unless you want to. Reinforcements...automatic unless you want to mess with it, supply...automatic unless you want to mess with it, headquarters span of control...automatic etc.

In beta, I purposefully did not get involved in micro-management and just played. I think I did ok. That is, until I ran into the micro-manager from hell...(who shall remain nameless) and he beat me like a drum, just as it should be.
