At Chunking my bombers attack unopposed and I do good damage to the air base and runway.

At Lingayen I bombard with my 48th Division to get a feel for Bill's defenses. He has the 11th and 21st PA Infantry Divisions plus the 86th PS Coastal Artillery Bn. I've got almost 3:1 in attacking force troops VS defending forces. My assault value was 468 VS his of 218. Those are numbers that make me smile. I order a deliberate attack for next turn.

Burma
The 33rd Division of the 15th Army finally catches up to Bill's 1st Burma Division at 56,50 - just NE of Prome. The 33rd plans a shock attack on the morrow, with bombers assigned to attack during the day to slow down the enemy unit's movement. At Prome is the 2nd RTA Division, which is moving to 56,50.

At Rangoon I split the 6th RTA into thirds so I can garrison Prome, Rangoon, and Bassein. Units are moving to their assigned locations.

At Toungoo I've got a gaggle four divisions plus the 15th Corps HQ. Two divisions are making way to Magwe and two are headed to Meiktila.

Aleutian Islands
TF76 from Sendai is in route to Paramushiro-jima with the 25th Ind. Engr Rgt. To help build up the airfield, port, and fort infrastructure.

Carrier Group 231 - Code Name Little Wing (2CVE 1CL 4DD) currently located @ Paramushiro-jima has just finished adding aircraft to the fighter and dive bomber groups. I pulled half the pilots from all four air groups into TRICOM. Little Wing will remain near PJ for another turn or three before joining as air support for the amphibious assault of Adak.

Amphibious TF80 - Code Name Five Iron - is just south of Hokkaido and in route to Adak with the 61dy Infantry Division loaded.

Amphibious TF206 - Code Name Parking Lot - is following behind Five Iron by a pair of hexes. Parking Lot has both the 5th and 144th JAAF AF Battalions loaded as I suspect Adak will need immediate air support.

Borneo
My ground units at Sambas were re-supplied by transports from Miri. Another DATK ordered. The two enemy LCU are identified as the 106th RN Base Force and the Sambas Base Force.

Malaya
The 18th Engr Bn & 8th Tank Rgt are in route to Mersing. The 1st Tank Rgt is already there. Two enemy LCU are there. I'll fly recon and bombers under escort to identify and dust up Bill's troops.

Th 21st Division and the 14th Tank Rgt @ Malacca are moving on Johore Bahru. Also at Malacca are six divisions that are unpacking from using the rail system. They'll be making their way down south in a few turns.

Notes from a theatre general in Borneo:
At Sambas, Borneo, the mighty Imperial ground forces drive out a pair of allied engineer units. All the civilians are happy to be free from under the reign of those allied units. Of note, we utilized special forces that have been practicing to jump out of perfectly good airplanes. I would also note that at least their ground combat skills seem to be adequate. I suppose I'll have to gather some transports and see how this whole jumping-out-of-airplanes thing goes. All I can say it that it'll be a cold day in hades before they get my fat arse to jump out of a plane. Heck - I don't even like flying in the darned things!

Ground combat at Sambas (57,88)

Japanese Deliberate attack

Attacking force 11583 troops, 94 guns, 10 vehicles, Assault Value = 344

Malaya
Johore Bharu falls on the 23rd to the mighty Imperial forces of Japan. The lights were on but no one was home…

Ground combat at Johore Bahru (50,83)

Japanese Deliberate attack

Attacking force 175 troops, 0 guns, 80 vehicles, Assault Value = 46

Defending force 0 troops, 0 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 0

Japanese adjusted assault: 22

Allied adjusted defense: 1

Japanese assault odds: 22 to 1 (fort level 2)

Japanese forces CAPTURE Johore Bahru !!!

Combat modifiers
Attacker: leaders(-)

Assaulting units:
14th Tank Regiment

I moved a group of Zeroes to CAP Johore Bahru and I have a bunch of LCU in route to support the base. This will also be my jumping off point to hit Singapore. A mouse over shows Bill has lotsa fighters over Singapore. This will be my first real test of air strength.

I have 10 divisions for the assault of Singapore. How many should I use in the river assault? I was thinking 4 divisions for the first crossing. After that the remainder of my troops should be able to cross without invoking the shock attack penalty of crossing the river - right?

Mersing is defended by the Mersing Fortress and the 22nd Australian Bde. I bombarded on the 23rd and will DATK on the 24th.

Philippines

I've given the green light for assaulting Clark Field this turn. We'll see how it goes but it looks like Bill is trying to gear his troops to fall back to Bataan along historical lines.

Use divisions you plan to employ quickly to other areas in the 2nd wave as the first wave will take the bulk of the disablements and take longer to recover.

Use divisions you plan to employ quickly to other areas in the 2nd wave as the first wave will take the bulk of the disablements and take longer to recover.

That makes sense. In truth, I'm kinda expecting to get most of my troops hammered at Singapore. It started the game @ level 3 forts and it's the end of January and I've done zero attacks against the base - so my wag is that Singers must be at least a level 5 by now...

Burma
○ Garrison Magwe with 4th RTA/B
- in route from Meiltila
○ Capture empty Taung Gyi with 4th RTA/C
- in route from Meiltila
○ Garrison Meiktila with 4th RTA/A
- @ base.
○ Capture Mandalay with 7th RTA Div. and the Armored RTA Div.
- in route from Magwe
○ Capture Shwebo with the 1st RTA Div. and the 33rd Div.
- In route from Magwe
○ Repair Rangoon infrastructure - 100\68\42 on 30JAN42
- 4th JAAF AF Coy is there (except for the sound device)
- 43rd Const. Engineers Rgt in route from Chiang Mai.
○ I transferred over an AG of L3Y2 Tina from Miri to Bangkok. This AG is tasked with transporting the 96th JAAF AF Bn @ Bangkok to Magwe, Burma.
○ I transferred over an AG of 27 Zeroes to Magwe to fly CAP. Magwe was captured with the oil field and refinery intact. I wanna keep it that way. :-)
○ I tasked an AG of 12 MC-21 Sally to fly over a fragment of the 94th JAAF AF Bn to Pegu. This is literally the Sound Detector(J). I see a Cargo Load Cost of 60 tons, Total Load Cost of 60 tons, and a stacking Cost of 20. The MC-21 Sally has a Maximum Load of 3,000 tons. In truth, I'm not sure why the Thaila AG was unable to transport over the Sound Detector(J) as the Thaila can transport 2,000 tons and the load cost under electronics is listed as 30... Range was not a factor as Pegu is 9 hexes out while the normal radius for the Thaila is 12 hexes…

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR Feb 03, 42
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TF 3 encounters mine field at Singkawang (56,88)

Allied Ships
DD Jupiter
DD Thracian
DD Stronghold

4 mines cleared

I mined this port a few turns back with subs. Bill must be board.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Near Serasan Bill runs in a SCTF consisting of a CA, 8CL, and 5DD. Although greatly outgunned, my Japanese SCTF patrolling the waters near Groot Natoena stands up well in the first engagement of the night - sinking a DD and scattering hits throughout the rest of his taskforce. 92% moonlight and the ability of Japan to cross the Allied force's "T" impact the combat heavily. In three additional night-time engagements the Imperial Japanese SCTF throws itself between the enemy and their obvious goal of Groot Natoena. Japan's SCTF shrinks in size over the engagements as ships either withdraw due to battle damage or are sunk outright in the furious night-time conflicts. The allies make it all the way to Groot Natoena only to find another Japanese SCTF consisting of a pair of cruisers and three DD. Having already been engaged in near continuous combat from near Serasan to Groot Natoena, the allies are nearly out of ammo when they run into the new Japanese task force. In the end the loses seem to be even; a pair of CL and DD are reported lost for each side. Japan cannot go toe-to-toe in losses against the allies but Man!!! That was a cool movie to watch. :-)

Malaya
® My DATK @ Singapore reduced the forts to level 3. I had 2:1 odds and still came out a bit worse for wear. Time to wait a few days and try again. I still have the 4th Division coming from Johore Bahru plus the Southern Army HQ. I've also added a pair of bomber groups to attack the LCU @ Singapore.

Sumatra
® I've been sending troops to Sumatra via landing barge from Georgetown. Bill has a couple of ships in the Strait of Malacca. I've set a fighter group and a dive bomber group that are both in the area to naval attack. I'm also attacking his Engineer LCU @ 45,75 that I chased out of Langsa earlier this month.

Burma
® Jeepers - 10 enemy ground units now @ Lashio! This is not gunna be good. It looks like he has the Corps unit in my hex in movement so I'm doing a DATK with my 33rd Division. I have three other divisions coming up but two of them are Thai units that are still around 50% strength. I'm thinking he has to be hurting for supplies at Lashio as I have been pounding his AF; it shows 48% damage. I've also moved up Sally units to attack his ground units @ Lashio. My hope is to ham-string his push into Burma by sapping his supplies and causing disruption.
® From Hanoi I'm attacking the AF @ Kunming. The more damage I do his base infrastructure the less supplies he'll have for Burma.

DEI
® I'm sending a Tanker TF from Japan to Rabaul with 95,440 tons of fuel to support operations in that theatre.

® I'm sending an amphibious TF to pick up the 127th Bde @ Iwo-jima and transport it to Mindanao as I ramp up operations in that area.

Economy
® I've set another Tanker TF from Japan to Shikuka. TF85 has a capacity of 43,120 tons and will CS-transport oil to Japan.

® I've set two subs currently based in Tokyo to change their home port to Rabaul. They will patrol near Southern Oz.

Aleutian Islands
® Kiska island flipped to Japan this turn.

China
® Kiuchuan falls to my Mongol troops. Once they get resupplied I will continue to spread the love in Northern China.
® I just rebuilt the 69th Division @ Peiping. It is packing to railroad to Tsiaotso and will march upon Sian from there.

Malaya
® Amphibious TF1 @ Sendai is almost finished with the loading of the 2nd Division for transport to Singora.
® My DATK @ Singapore dropped Forts down to level 2. My units will rest for a day or three.

Sumatra
® So the enemy TF I see in the Straight of Makassar is at Medan. It was not attacked on the 15th.
® My 41st Regiment successfully routed the Langsa Base Force, which retreated to Medan. The 41st is now in route to Medan.

Burma
® Mt DATK near Lashio did nothing. I was banking on Bill's unit being in movement as I see the little tic on the icon. Woods defensive modifier rules. Still, the 33rd should arrive next turn and I think I might-could bottle him up if he doesn't have more than 10 corps of Chinese infantry.

Borneo
® I'm doing another DATK @ Singkawang.
® I'm also attacking the ground units from the air with light bombers from Kuching.

PI
® I formed Amphibious TF193 @ Kanazawa and it is now loading the 52nd Division for transport to Lingayen.
® I'm doing another DATK @ Clark Airfield.

DEI
® Fast TF114 is loaded with the 142nd Indian Mixed Rgt and in route to Hollandia.
® Amphibious TF137 @ Tokyo is loading the 38th JNAFAF Unit for transport to Hollandia.

Pacific
® Cargo TF206 is in route to Roi-Namur from Truk with 19k of supplies.
® Cargo TF166 is in route to Kwajalein Isle from Truk with 15k of supplies

Economy
® Tanker TF85 is now CS TF85, running oil from Shikuka to Ominato.

Naval Ops
® The PB Naruto Maru #3 took a torpedo last turn while on patrol near Cam Ranh Bay. 19/43/1 damage and only two hexes from Cam Ranh Bay, which has a repair yard. Torpedoes are funny creatures. I watched three of them sink the Yorktown while a patrol boat is able to limp home after eating just one…

Bif,

I know that the 800kg bombs were a mainstay on Japanese carriers.. For instance I know the Taiho carried 90..

21FEB42
Sumatra
- At Georgetown I'm loading the Yokosuka Assault SNLF and the 81st Naval Guard Unit for transport to Langsa.
- My bombardment of the enemy troops at Medan on the 20th revealed 3 small enemy units - the Langsa Base Force that I routed into that hex plus the Medan Base Force and the Medan Coastal Gun Bn. I have ordered a DATK for the 21st. Additionally, the 91st Naval Guard Unit at Langsa is moving down to Medan and is 20/92m out.

Malaya
- I rested my troops at Singapore over the 20th. I also added several more bomber groups to attack the Singapore AF as I think Bill has been able to do repairs so he could build on his forts faster than I was able to keep his airfields/Ports in the red for damage.
- Bill brought in B-17s to attack my resources at Johore Bahru. B-17s have 500 lb. bombs… Japan won't have anything that carries 500 lbs. or better for bombing until the Judy dive bomber in early 1943. The saving grace for Japan VS the allied 4E bombers is their Service Rating of 4. So I have been a little lax in my base CAP. Bill going after my bases forces me to increase my fighter CAP so this is a good move on Bill's part. Also, I have three AAA units at Johore Bahru but they are all Field AA Gun Companies with a half-dozen 75mm guns. While it looks, from the Combat Report of the 20th, I'm sure the defense regiments with the 88mm guns would do better against the allied 4E bombers.
- The 41st and 42nd Air Defense AA Regiments plus the 41st Air Defense AA Bn. Are all at Shanghai. I reassigned them to the Southern Army and will transport them to Malaya.
§ TF240 is in route to Shanghai from Pescadores to pick up the three AA units.
- I've increased CAP for some of my fighter groups for Johore Bahru to help VS future 4E attacks. It's interesting to me that he is flying so low with those 4E bombers. Most allied players treat those bomber like gold for a reason.

- At Aparri Cargo TF127 is unloading 25k of supplies.
- South of Saishu To, Amphibious TF193 is loaded with the 52nd Division and in route to Lingayen.
- On the 20th I did a DATK and received 1:1 odds while forts were at level 0. Still, my supplies for my troops are good and most of the units are in fair shape. I'm doing a Shock Attack on the 21st.

I was looking at payloads of Japan's bombers and I see I don't have anything that can carry a 500 lb. bomb until the Judy arrives.

Also - Bill did an update to the database of our game resulting in Japan receiving an additional 15,000+ victory points... I've asked if he wants to change that back as my WAG is that the VP change was not his intent.

Corrected a typo from 1,500+ vp to 15,000+ vp. Sometimes those zeros add up...

Another few turns like this and I think I'll win... That last spike of almost 5k points is me capturing Singapore, Jolo, and Medan.

So my current plans are to:

- Push along the Aleutian Isles so I have a good chain of close-knit bases that I can reasonably put up a good defense, interlocking air support, and serve as support for subs and naval operations.
- In Burma it looks like Bill is really pushing Chinese troops into Lashio. He has 15 units there as I type. I'm bombing the snot outta the base and hitting his troops. He has to have supply problems along that flimsy chain so I'm hoping that I can bomb him into next week while I work to move additional troops into the Burma region.
- In Sumatra I'm pushing up and down from Langsha with troops. And I'm ferrying more across from Georgetown. That whole barge thing from Georgetown to Langsha is kinda cool. :-) I'm also pushing support to Singapore and Singkawang to start the pounding of Palembang.
- I'm also pushing troops to Pontianak. I'll start flooding south into the Java Sea while my troops recover from Singapore operations and then drive a stake into Palembang and Batavia.
- Operations in the PI and Mindanao will heat up soon too, as I start driving all along that front and into Southern Borneo.

So I continue to bombard Kota Bharu while landing troops.

At Pearl Harbor I do get in that second day of attacks but there really wasn't much meat on the bone. And Bill's sub, the Plunger, plunged a torpedo into my AO Nippon Maru. In the end, I don't think I came out much ahead at PH.

I wonder why some TB fly with 800kg SAP and others with 250kg SAPs? It wasn't a range thing…

2 major criteria in that decision:
leadership: if you lost your original leader in the first day attack, then your replacement was likely lower quality
DL: after the first day, DL again becomes quite relevant in load-out decision.

I thought for Carrier Ops it was the carrier leader that had primary impact on those rolls. For influencing DL, I had RECON air groups plus FP from some of my capitol ships. TB and DB had a 10% Search for every other group. What I've never been really sure of is that if say, I have groups A, B, & C all set to 10% Search, and group B sees an enemy contact, does it report the contact to group A and C? Because sometimes, from watching the movie, it seems like the other two groups don't always get the message from B...
