Looks like i'm writing for myself again. If anybody has any suggestions to make it more interesting or things that i should cover please let me know. Its my first AAR and it was a requirement for this game. I was hoping it might help me learn more about the game. But if i'm the only one reading it it's still okay because it forces me to think about things a little more than i would otherwise.

In the real war:

Day 910 February 26, 1942
Invasion of Java. Following air reconnaissance reports of ABDA ships in the Java Sea, Japanese Eastern Force (41 troop transports) turns around while cruisers and destroyers cover the East end of the Java Sea. ABDA Combined Striking Force, under Dutch Admiral Karel Doorman, sets out again from Soerabaja to seek the invasion force but again they find nothing.

Japanese submarine I-25 launches its floatplane to reconnoiter Melbourne, Australia.

American citizens of Japanese descent are arrested by the FBI and forcibly relocated from their homes in East San Pedro, Terminal Island, Los Angeles, beginning the internment of Japanese-Americans by the US government.

i'm really hoping this was part of the refueling tf for the CVs north of Australia. Might make thing a little tougher for them.

Those AO TANs are Dutch pitiful tankers, which begin war around Java. Probably just evacuating fuel from DEI. They have like 1000 capacity.

Problem with strafing is that every MG will fire against you, so any attack on large group of LCUs is suicide, and there is hardly any reason to strafe small groups. 4Es are good at this, but as Japan you only lose planes.
Use your NICKs against B-17. They have good guns, but are bad against fighters.

Also, planes can advance during month, so you will get RUFE production, but don't try to use them against enemy fighters.

Your submarines near enemy ports will be hunted by enemy (but in return you can hunt those small TFs with your ships). Use them to finish damaged enemy ships, and for detect enemy movement. Also, loaded enemy transports are good targets, especially full of planes, or fuel. Drop some mines in smaller ports, larger probably have dedicate mine sweepers. You probably already know that, but Midget Submarines are useless, but you can put them in your own ports, where they can even hit something and survive.

Hi inqistor,
Thanks. I have a lot of subs NE of Australia along the retreat path of the CVs. One of them was detected before firing a torp but it identified the TF as 9 ships: TK,TK,CV,CV,CV,CV,CA,CA,CA so i think they were the refueling TF. Hope i disrupted their plans a little.

The only B-17 attacks have been on atolls with no airfield i'll save the nicks for later. Or maybe to gun down those pesky PT boats.

You can LRCAP from nearby airfields, not many planes will show up, but NICKs have good range. B-17 gets only few months of replacements, and then return only in 1945.
Anyway, standard Allies tactics is to bombard Oil as soon, as you get the Base. Watch out!

I like those little dutch AO's. They are great imbedding in short legged little convoys to get them somewhere (like Cape) that they need to get to instead of just VP's for the IJ to harvest.

Looks like you’ll be able to start building Rufes within a week then.
How many are you planning to build per month?

Letting 1x30 factory produce them should be more than enough as not many groups can upgrade to them, but that means it will take you a few weeks of production before you have enough to equip the first air group.

Have you thought about what you will do with the other Rufe factories?
You’ll need to check those factories every day for the next few days so they don’t do something you don’t want them to, like lock you into building # x 30 Rufes/month!
I recommend that you save your game just before changing something on them in case it doesn’t do what you expect.

Most players shift the excess Rufe RnD to A6M RnD as it does so without damaging the factories. Check the tree to be sure you choose the correct A6M5 variant.

would one of you more experienced players mind helping me with this. I remember having a problem when the r&d finishes the day before the new month when they are ready. Do they lock in the very first day of the month. That is my recollection. It's been a while.

It is Feb 28, 1942 is not a leap year so tomorrow is march 1st and my r&d has caused the Rufe to advance to 3/42.

I have 8 factories researching Rufe. They are:

Tokyo A6M2-N Rufe(2) 30(0)-rd(3/42)
Tokyo A6M2-N Rufe(2) 30(0)-rd(3/42)
Tokyo A6M2-N Rufe(2) 30(0)-rd(3/42)
Tokyo A6M2-N Rufe(2) 30(0)-rd(3/42)
Kobe A6M2-N Rufe(2) 28(2)-rd(3/42)
Kobe A6M2-N Rufe(2) 28(2)-rd(3/42)
Kobe A6M2-N Rufe(2) 27(3)-rd(3/42)
Kobe A6M2-N Rufe(2) 26(4)-rd(3/42)

I think what i want to change the 1st 4 that are completely repaird to A6M5c.

and i want to leave the last one that is furthest away as a Rufe and start building when repaired.

i'm not sure of the best way to get the other 3 to A6M5c the fastest. If i change them directly now doesn't it take longer? A6M5c doesn't get here until 10/44. Should i go A6M5 first and then when repaired go the rest of the way?

I found Kamikawa Maru 1 and Kamikawa Maru 2 have the option to upgrade to Rufes. I'm not sure of any others. I think in the next 2 months i will get 3 size 9 groups as reinforcements. I want to upsize all those to 24 so that's 120 planes plus spares. I use and lose a lot of them though.

The further away the normal arrival date, the longer it takes to repair a research factory.
I’d move the <30 factories only to the next A6M5 and not move them further along the path until they are fully repaired.

Not sure if you know, but don’t go straight to the 5c, you have to change the factory along the path.
One false click and you blow 30k supply!

In the real war:

Day 911 February 27, 1942

At 11.40 AM 58 miles South of Tjilatjap, Java, US seaplane tender USS Langley (carrying US P-40 fighters from Australia for the defense of Java) is attacked by 3 waves of Japanese dive bombers and immobilized with 5 bomb hits (16 killed). US destroyers USS Whipple and USS Edsall take off 308 and 177 survivors, respectively (and also sink USS Langley with shellfire and 2 torpedoes to prevent capture by the Japanese). However, US freighter Sea Witch arrives safely at Tjilatjap with 27 crated P-40s (these are never assembled and will be destroyed to prevent capture).

Battle of the Java Sea. At midday, Dutch Admiral Karel Doorman’s ABDA Combined Striking Force returns to Soerabaja, Java, but immediately sets out again, low on fuel, after a sighting of the Japanese invasion force. In a series of attempts to reach the Japanese troop transports from 4 PM to midnight, Doorman’s 5 cruisers (British HMS Exeter, American USS Houston, Australian HMAS Perth and Dutch HNLMS De Ruyter & HNLMS Java) and 9 destroyers (British HMS Electra, HMS Encounter & HMS Jupiter, Dutch HNLMS Kortenaer & HNLMS Witte de With and American USS Alden, USS John D. Edwards, USS John D. Ford, and USS Paul Jones) are outgunned by the Japanese cruisers Haguro and Nachi (each packing ten 8-inch guns) and 14 destroyers. From 4.30 – 6.30 PM, destroyer HNLMS Kortenaer is sunk by a torpedo (60 killed, 90 survivors), destroyer HMS Electra (136 killed, 42 survivors) is sunk in an exchange of shellfire and cruiser HMS Exeter is hit with a shell and returns to port. At 9.15 PM, destroyer HMS Jupiter sinks on a Dutch minefield laid earlier in the day near the coast of Java (83 killed, 100 survivors swim ashore). At 11.15 PM, torpedoes from the Japanese cruisers sink Dutch cruisers HNLMS De Ruyter (375 killed including Admiral Doorman, 115 survivors) & HNLMS Java (512 killed, 43 survivors). The last 2 cruisers HMAS Perth and USS Houston follow Doorman's last instruction and escape to Batavia, Java, without picking up survivors.

so the boys were getting a little rambunctious and i thought it might be nice to take a little trip down south for some R&R (I mean target practice). We had an ok time, the weather was not good, we didn't see all the sights we wanted to see and i made a error in communicating orders that puts us in a terrible predicament that might be difficult to escape from. Auckland sounded like a nice place, none of us had ever been there, some BBs had been seen there along with some B-17s. We loaded up a lot of film and decided we would go take some shots. Turns out one of my carrier task forces misunderstood and thought Auckland was a port call. I don't know if we will ever see them again.

In the real war:

Day 914 March 2, 1942

Java. Japanese Western force advances 40 miles from Serang, threatening to cut off the route South from Batavia, but they are held at Leuwiliang for 2 days by Australian Blackforce (under Brigadier Arthur Blackburn VC). The direct advance on Batavia is slowed by the marshy terrain and bridges blown up by retreating Dutch troops. At Soebang, 250 Dutch troops with 20 tanks attempt to retake Kalidjati airfield but they are repelled. Japanese Eastern Force captures the oilfields at Tjepoe (now Cepu). Dutch government moves from Batavia to a safer location 70 miles inland at Bandoeng and US B-17 bombers begin evacuating key personnel to Australia. Dutch scuttle warships at Soerabaja to prevent capture by the Japanese (destroyers HNLMS Banckert & Witte de With, non-functional submarines K-10, K-13 & K-18, minesweepers HNLMS B & D, minelayers HNLMS Rigel, Soemenep & Bangkalan). Damaged US destroyer USS Stewart is not demolished in dry dock as planned (will be repaired and commissioned into the Japanese Navy as Patrol Boat No. 102).

At 9 PM East of Bali in the Lombok Strait, US submarine USS Sailfish sinks Japanese auxiliary aircraft transport Kamogawa Maru (5 crew, 273 troops and 48 passengers lost). USS Sailfish is counterattack with 40 depth charges but suffers little damage.

In the Java Sea. Adding to yesterday’s damage, US submarine USS Perch is depth-charged again, this time by Japanese destroyer Ushio. Japanese destroyer Ikazuchi rescues 442 survivors from HMS Exeter, HMS Encounter and USS Pope who have been adrift for 20 hours.

A Japanese battle group lurks in the Indian Ocean to interrupt the escape route South from Java to Australia. At 7 PM, Japanese cruiser Maya and destroyers Arashi & Nowaki pummel British destroyer HMS Stronghold with 1,270 8-inch & 5-inch shells from 2,000 yards (75 killed, 50 survivors picked up by Japanese cruiser Maya next morning). At 9 PM 500 miles South of Java, Japanese cruisers Takao and Atago sink US destroyer USS Pillsbury, with 5 minutes of shellfire (all 145 crew and 28 sailors from USS Stewart killed).

Burma. Japanese 33rd and 55th Infantry Divisions cross River Sittang on ferries unopposed at Kunzeik and Donzayit, North of the demolished Sittang Bridge. They cross the irrigated rice paddies of the Sittang delta and push 2nd Battalion Royal Tank Regiment (7th Armored Division) out of the village of Waw. 2nd RTR withdraws 20 miles West to Payagyi, an important road junction protecting Rangoon held by the remnants of Indian 17th Infantry Division following their disaster at Sittang Bridge.

Perhaps i was a little too worried. Having KB start the day in an enemy port amongst mines a long way from home with the exact whereabouts enemy CVs and BBs unclear isn't my idea of fun. But we retreated and it looks like we can make it back to port without too much pain.

On This day in the real war:

At 9.20 AM, 9 Japanese Zero fighters from Koepang, Timor, strafe the Roebuck Bay flying boat anchorage at Broome (destroying 15 flying boats) and RAAF airfield (destroying 2 USAAF B-17s, 2 RAAF Hudsons and a Dutch Lockheed Lodestar). They also shoot down a USAAF B-24 Liberator (carrying 30 wounded personnel) which crashes into the sea 10 miles off Broome and a KLM Douglas DC-3 airliner (carrying refugees from Java) which crashes into the jungle 50 miles North of Broome (diamonds worth £150,000–300,000 are lost). Naah, that one should be doable, you were close to 2:1, and now forts are down to 0. And enemy had 2 times as many loses.

Don't use so many ships in bombardment, you need at least two strong TFs, if enemy fleet shows up. Plus you should hunt with them those retreating vessels.
And always keep BBs with your CVs, they tend to be chosen as target, instead of your CVs. One hit may disable your CV, because of poor damage control.

Real life has been real busy so i have been able to continue the PBEM but been remiss in updating the AAR.

It is now 3/14/42 and things seem to be progressing okay except for china. I just don't have the patience for tactical. I think i can handle the strategy half way decently but the tactics puts me to sleep. i never had used the move mode until mid february in this game. I just didn't understand how to use it in all my other games. Pretty stupid.

I lost a CS when my opponents made a deep raid near Palembang so that's the only capital ship i have lost so far. If you add in 8 old DDs and 3 TBs it doesn't seem like a lot given the territories i've taken.

Fog of war and all that but it seems i have had some luck in sinking my opponents naval assets, especially cruisers. My people tell me we have sunk 3 BBs, 5 CAs, 14 CLs, 24 DDs, 19 SSs and lots of other ships. I don't know enough about the game to know which of the other ships are important to keep track of. Perhaps one of you could clue me in.

In the air i have lost 231 Sallys. I know that is a WITP AE record. pretty silly stuff. lots of Lilys too and Nells. but funny enough not a lot of really good pilots. There are a lot of op losses in those numbers. My opponent has not contested my air crews much so i have very few Aces at this point but almost all my CV zero pilots have 80+ exp and lost of vals and kates too.

I've got 2 weeks left of the bonus and should have the following:

Aluetians: I've got Adak almost done as a large base and a number of smaller bases around it.
Bonins, Marianas, Carolines: fort building
Marshall, Gilberts, Ellices: fort building
Fijis, Tongas: fort building
New Caledonia, New Hebrides: large bases at Noumea and Luganville and lots of smaller bases around them.
New Guinea, New Britain: large base at Rabaul and lots of smaller bases around them.
solomons, Santa Cruz: pathway for ships to Noumea
Lord Howe, Norfolk, Raoul Is: Nav search bases to spy on southern pacific naval traffic
eastern Australia down to Brisbane: Cooktown and Cairns so far.....
Northern Australia: Darwin, Wyndam so far......
Philippines, Celebes, Timor: Fort building some port expansion for oil
Borneo, Java, Sumatra: Fort building some port expansion for oil
Malaya, Thailand, Burma: fort building - Magwe and n burma still allied but close to being done.

need to think and plan for my next wave after consolidating and resting ships and aircraft.

any suggestions?

Track his loses pf large TKs and AOs, when he starts his counter attack and drives further away from his centers of supplies he will need these to feed his fleet. Sink many of them early will hamper his ability to move quickly and deeply because of lack of fuel supplies forward.

KB starts with 80exp pilots, so no change here :)

You should work now on your pilots training. The most important goal is to secure Burma, so supply don't flow into China.
Generally you have to prepare counterattack, to strike Allies, when they try to make some initial landing, when you still have advantage. Aleutians are frequent first target, but you have Fiji, so that is also possible. You should try to destroy large LCUs, especially non Chinese, and non US, as that other have low replacement rate.

Thanks for the advice. I haven't done very well in that regard. I've only sunk 4 AOs and 8 TKs. I haven't figured out yet where i might have better luck finding them. I thought i would see a few going to australia because i have all those islands with search planes but not much so far.

This is the current picture in Burma. Do you think the supply flow is cut?

I think supply still flows from Myitkyina to Paoshan. Not much, but if he planned right, he can push some through the jungle.

When he strikes at Aleutians, he will bring all CVs, so your only possible answer is KB. You need 1-2 Divisions for quick counter landing, and possibly some mobile Brigade to airlift. But when he come, he will take some of those empty Bases. You need to get all green dots first, there could be troops already there expanding them. Don't keep your fleet at front. Alpha Strike will sink them, before you know he is coming.
Just observe which Bases he recon.

In China, don't fight in difficult terrain, just leave there enough forces to blockade. There are enough Bases in clear terrain to take.
I see lots of warnings in east China. Lack of garrison? Anyway, take whole coast, there are some serious supply production there. And city is on the coast, great spot for BB gunnery training.

The ability of TK and AO convoy hunting is helped by your float plane carrying subs along his suspected convoy routes to NZ-OZ. Once you have figured out where those routes are then you can send in a portion of the KB to raid those lines of supply and sink his tankers at sea.

Thanks Bif. I'll try.
