One of the first things I do with Ancient Galaxies is to slow the game down to 0.25 speed because there is so much going on..... For example in the first minute of play, I was trying to work out why one race had refused a trade agreement with me and another race was angry about something, others were offering me maps and locations.... and then I get a message one of my ships is being attacked. So I go to the location of the ship and it's being attacked by 3 other ships... so while it's being attacked on 3 fronts I take control of it, send it out to one of the distant planets in that system . Once it is safe from attack I then send it back to base for fuel and any repairs. That was the first few minutes. I then look at the diplomacy screen and I have around 8 races angry with me..... 2 of them who have a unity pact. Those 2 have my priority because if one decides to go to war with me the other one will be dragged in as well. Always better to fight just one enemy rather than two. When I have a race angry with me I check the diplomacy to see why they are angry. As seen in the picture below in current relationships I find the Teekan Industries confirm that though we share a small volume of trade with them they are upset because we refuse to trade valuable resources with them. Who refused? .... I just got here. So I look at what valuable resources they need, I look at what I currently trade with them, and look at what I can do to get them to be not so angry with me. If the other races that are angry are also upset about trade, I then have to look at whether I need to sack my trade ministers and take control of trade choices myself. So while your military builds up a huge fleet of ships, I would keep an eye on the diplomacy screen and try to settle differences with races who are angry and upset with you, specifically when you said above "once the war starts, everybody just wipes out my mining/gas stations"...... it sounds like many races got together to take you out. And believe me, Ancient Galaxies is hard. If you still have problems with being wiped out, again and again, you could try the other themes or mods which are less challenging but can still be difficult if you so choose. With the other themes, you can decide how advanced in the game you are and start with only 3 or 4 other races to deal with.... thus giving you more playtime and enjoyment before all races are active. You can also limit the number of races so that instead of 17 or 18 races to deal with you could have a limit of 6 or 7.... whatever number you prefer. But Ancient Galaxies.... yes it is a challenge from the very start.
