This may have to do with the fact that Aircraft now have a ground speed that is different from their airspeed, and aircraft that are evading in a dive may still have a substantial airspeed, but much lower groundspeed. The missiles seem to lead the target based off of it's airspeed, but calculated as if it were groundspeed. In the attached save of the Hail Mary scenario from CoW there is an AIM-120D approaching a J-20 just a little south east of Okinawa.

The J-20 starts a very steep dive losing almost all it's ground speed while picking up airspeed while not making substantial heading changes, yet the AMRAAM which is still under datalink for a few seconds turns away from the J-20 from a heading of 278 to 283. The seeker turns on just over 5nm of ground distance from the target, and the datalink is lost just under that, but there is still 2 nautical miles of altitude difference between the missile and the target. It passes by without acquiring the target.

The problem is the J-20 is effectively notching the AMRAAM's seeker head, but the missile isn't receiving updates from the F-35 anymore so it misses. I think this has been discussed and the missile should be guided all the way in by the F-35's radar if it is still being illuminated rather than relying on the AMRAAMS seeker.

The missile is still under datalink guidance for several seconds in the save with its seeker turned off.

Here is a screenshot of the last moment before the missile loses the datalink, taken from the editor so I can show the ground speed of the J-20 vs the airspeed.

You can see from the approximate intercept location, The J-20 is about 1.68nm away, and the AIM-120 is almost exactly 5nm away from it. That's a 0.336:1 ratio. The ratio of total airspeed of the J-20 (947) and the missile (2650) is 0.357:1. On the other hand the ratio of the ground speed of the J-20 (523) vs the missile (2432) is 0.215:1. Given the J-20's groundspeed, the missile should be directed to an intercept just over 1nm away from the J-20, but instead it is flying to an intercept 1.68nm away, about 50% further than it should.
