Was having a dicussion today with some german friends, for some reason the topic of WW2 german tanks was being talked about. I mentioned that there was a german tank nicknamed Salamander due to it's supposed to being fireproof.
I am 100% sure I saw a photo or read something about such a tank.
Am I wrong? Have I mistakening mixed something up or are my german friends wrong and such a tank did exsist?

I hope someone here can help me and bring light into this matter. Please include links to any sites where I may find information.

Thanks

Mat

Hi british exil, sorry I can't help you with your question - tanks aren't really my thing - but welcome back to the forum, where ya been?

Warspite, thx for the response. I know if the question would have been about ships you would have responded faster.

You noticed correctly that I have been AWOL for quite a while, real life has kept me busy. Changes in work and the 6 yr old son keeps me on my feet. Will try to visit the forums more often again.

There was never any German tank with that name, not even drawing board proposals. It appears however a
Model company used the name for some hypothetical ultra late war super heavy tank destroyer.

Greetings british exil,
The only German Salamander is The Wooden jet fighter He 162 in WW 2
http://www.aviation-history.com/heinkel/he162.html

Among flame thrower tanks the British had the Adder, Salamander and Crocodile (the funnies) in WW 2.
Only the Crocodile became widespread in usage. Salamander was an internal flame thrower in tank turrent and not practical.
https://tanks-encyclopedia.com/ww2/US/sherman-crocodile (see last paragraph).
