PBEM is very easy to do in a Do-it-yourself style, and there is little need for anything to be added for that. WiF has so many decision points by the inactive player that a purely PBEM game for each of those would move at a glacial pace. Far better to play a hybrid electronic game - email saved game files when needed, but during the intensive interaction points such as naval and air movement and combat phases, it is better to communicate in real time with your opponent via any style you choose - Skype, text, chat, remote screen-sharing, perhaps even actually email as long as you both agree to be sending receiving email live. Lots of folks play this way and overall fairly simple in the 21st century. For AI, there are a lot of threads discussing development timelines, what's current, etc., a little farther down from this Tech Support forum on the top of the list. Short version - it is still quite a distance away.
