I was playing the EW tutorial and I launched a flight of 2 F-35I fighters in a sneaky snek mission to shoot down enemy EW assets. I pointed then in its general direction and let them go. When enemy fighters got well into missile range, I turned on their radars and let them auto-engage. If you load the 60 second autosave and wait a few seconds, one of the fighters of Flight 1007 (IIRC) will engage a MiG-25 Foxbat that is way, waaaaay out of the missiles engagement range. At the 40 second autosave, the missile has just launched. Unsurprisingly, the missiles peter out halfway between the launcher and the target.

Thanks for listening!

EDIT: I was using the latest Beta Update (1121.3) installed over the Steam version.

I've had the same issue in another scenario before. (I posted about it on the forum, but not much respons so far.)

I see it too - the range is just over 100nm.

The WRA is set for maximum range, but for a AIM-120C that's 60-75nm. Perhaps firing at an approaching target extends that, but 100nm seems too far.

Interestingly I get the description for the HAWK if I click the weapon blurb link. I wonder if there could be a database mismatch as well, which might explain it, though I don't know that.

You could try reducing the range in the WRA doctrine.

The Hawk description shows up when a description is missing sometimes. Its a legacy issue from day 1 of CMNAO release. It has no impact on the database.

I suspect that its an engagement envelope issue with the potential speed of Mig-25. If its at full speed, the AI is calculating that it the Mig will be in the kill zone when the AIM-120 gets near the end of its run. A WRA with max setting will allow the AIM-120 to be launched at max possible engagement. I have run into situations like this when firing on an SR-76 in some cold war scenarios.

SR-76

Is that's the Blackbird's faster cousin?

This "firing way too soon" may not be a CMO issue. Just before CMO came out, I published a Tech Support report about my HARM-armed aircraft in CMANO were firing way too soon as well. Even though I put all kinds of Doctrine restrictions in the firing procedures, and even more through WRA, the aircraft would fire off HARMs in an instant. Most would come nowhere near the target, and simply run out of fuel.

In any case, I just wanted to pass along this info because the problem may stretch back to CMANO. Perhaps it will help.

I've another example of an AMRAAM firing at extreme range against an easy target and almost always missing.

The launching aircraft is a Super Hornet (Dambusters #4) and the target is a Y-8X Cub (Chinese copy of An-12), not the most nimble of adversaries.

The AMRAAM fires at about 100nm range; the weapon endgame shows base PH of 95%, but adjusted for distance it becomes 5%. Default WRA settings.

Sure we can change the WRA range, but I'd suggest the default should still use a realistic envelope.

Edit:
Run forward - the first launch happens soon after. 1121.3
