I've downloaded Build 11121.3 and extracted all the files, overwriting as needed. My Command.exe file is dated 12/12/19. Everything went as usual. When I launch the game, however, it opens Build 1115.8.1, which I've verified in the About Command file. I had this same issue with each of the earlier builds (1115.7, 5.8, and 5.8.1), and waited until I could update through Matrix, which is how I got to my current Build 1115.8.1. Any thoughtful hints? Thanks.

PS to my last: I've tried it both with my Norton on and with it off. Same results.

What happens if you directly double-click the command.exe dated 12/12/2019?

Also, file size is often a good indicator of a successful placement - my 1121.3 is 11,761 KB.

If I double-click the command.exe file directly I get a small, dark gray box with a white banner that says "error". In the box is a white X with a circle around it on a red background and displaying this: "Land-cover map files not found! Aborting..."

My file size is the same a guanotwozero's, 11,761 KB

Doesn't sound like it has updated CMO if it is in the same folder as the Cover images

How are you launching the game? You could try running launcher.exe - I think it sets stuff up before it chains command.exe

If you have a shortcut you can see what it calls in Properties (unless it's Steam which is too cryptic).

Also, make sure you're logged on as an administrator.

In any case, there's always the brute force solution of uninstall - reboot - reinstall - test run - add patch.

Where do I find launcher.exe? Is that in the same main directory as command.exe? I start the game by double-clicking the shortcut that the game placed on my desktop. Should I try to create a new shortcut from the updated command.exe file and replace the one on my desktop? I'm always logged on as the administrator.

What is this "add patch" that you mention? I'm afraid my computer training ended with COBOL and FORTRAN before Ronald Reagan became president. Some us are old.

Ok, I right clicked the CMO shortcut on my desktop and it points to C:\Program Files (x86)\Matrix Games\Command Modern Operations\Launcher.exe. That is not where the game was installed and until 10 minutes ago, I didn't know such a duplicate of the CMO program was even on my computer. When I purchased the game, it downloaded to C:\Matrix Games\CMO-MultiSetup-v1.00.11153, (C:\Matrix Games being the same directory that holds CMANO and other Matrix games) and CMO-MultiSetup-v1.00.11153, as the install folder, is where I have been downloading and extracting the updates to no avail. Something tells me I might get a different result if I download and extract the update into the CMO version that resides as a sub-file of C:\Program Files (x86). Amirite?

I would not install it into 'C:\Program Files (x86)\' as this can have issues with Windows. You would probably need to run it as Administrator to get around the Windows protection against updating the 'Program files' folder.
All my Matrix games are installed in 'C:\Matrix Games\<game>'

You are!

I think what you might have done is to download the installer to the first directory, but running it has installed the game into the second.

@michaelm75au is right that it's usually a good idea to install games outside the "Program Files (x86)" directory, but if you keep clicking the "next" button it usually defaults to there - you have to explicitly choose a different install path.

If so, I do recommend uninstalling and reinstalling to your "C:\Matrix Games\..." dir. The "patch" is just another name for the "update" or "build" from this forum, currently 1121.3.

Michael was correct. I could not download the update to the C:\Program Files (x86) even after going through the torturous process of getting administrator rights. Not could I unzip it to that file. So, presumably there is an uninstall file somewhere I can run? Do i need to uninstall it from the Program Files (x86) folder also or will that happen automatically? Thanks to you both for the assistance.

The usual method of uninstall would be from "Windows Start Button->Settings->Apps", select Command and click uninstall. Best to do a reboot after that, just in case.

After that you're good to install elsewhere.

Thanks to you both, but I think I came up with an even better solution. I talked Santa Claus into bringing me a brand new i7 laptop with enough memory to install CMO and Tacview, which I'm dying to try out. I'm going to pay close attention to where the program wants to install itself and make sure it stays out of the Program Files (x86) folder. Happy Holidays to you both. Richard
