ORIGINAL: STIENER theres some discussion in another post about the german MG 42 not being very effective. the MG in the squad doesn't seem to be in the best positions for LOS when the squad deploys...especially in hedge rows. the MG doesn't fire a lot of time...the rifles and MP 40's fire before the MG does...if it fires at all. german MG squads are easily suppressed by allied rifle teams. the german MG 42 kill count is quite low. what are you players seeing? give us your thoughts please. EDIT: This sums up my thoughts succinctly. IMO MG42 is not effective. At the very least, the issue is in hedgerows in this release. I can have a dozen MG42 units, and they are like close to an equal match against a couple of M1 Garands(which they should not be). I lose men so quickly! As has been said(I think by Stiener), frontal assaults against MG42 come across as easy for Americans, but should be next to impossible. Steve said they are willing to adjust reaction time and positioning, which will drastically help, but I think German units need to center on their machine gun as the most important member of their team and position accordingly. A big problem is you must constantly reposition, which exposes the team and takes time to for "Setting up" At this point it comes across as a weak and slowly reacting unit and the firepower is halting and far from sweeping, barely ever there when you need it. You get some good hits in, but for the most part it feels lackluster. It is a challenge when playing as an American, which TBF was designed for, but playing as Germans you can tell the engine needs work. Traverse fire and better positioning of MG42 would improve this drastically as currently I can't even position crossfires effectively. The units never seem to have clear lines of sight. Clear crossfires are extremely rare in this release, particularly in the bocage(though they work great in North Africa and Italy). The units just so so so rarely see the enemy and fire sparingly when they do. Something does not seem right as the bocage is reputed as the most fearsome grounds for the MG42. When I do open fire, the teams are almost instantly annihilated by Garands, .30 cal machine guns and mortars. The Germans just do not last in the bocage! The simple fact is that there just is not a winning strategy for fighting in the bocage as Germans in this release. You are constantly fighting a losing battle and though an MG42 is part of almost every team, it can barely match a couple of Garands. Anyone that plays this will feel the frustration. You can set up crossfires, you can wait for the right moment, but it rarely if ever works! It is just my experience of playing against the AI. I can't imagine I am THAT bad as I have been an avid CC fan since the beginning. So, in my opinion, work needs to be done. THIS GAME IS GREAT. So I don't mean to be a downer. This is a difficult game to build from scratch. So I am trying to be constructive with my criticism and just give my honest experience. Outside of the bocage I get a tremendous sense of realism. But once I enter hedgerow country? The odds feel stacked in favor of the Garand over the MG42.
