I have started down the path of Guadalcanal having restarted several times. It seems that I am starting to get a better idea on the basics of naval movement /combat. I like the game. In fact it inspired me to purchase a board game monster, Empire of the Sun. I really like that one too.

But I find that playing solitaire EOTS, at least for me, seems easier to “see” what I am doing and yet have surprise. MWIF I struggle I’m the naval side in Guadalcanal by “knowing what’s going on”, even though the sea box search rolls add uncertainty. I am not sure that I am explaining myself very well.

I enjoy MWIF very much so far. Any help on the solitaire tips to help with dealing with “knowledge” would be greatly appreciated.

Michael

Best way to learn is going in the deep end. Play the global war solitaire then try start a PBEM game. PBEM game are very good if you use an online die roller that sends rolls to both players.

Online die roller?

Regarding global war it had seemed the consensus was to do the 5 turn scenarios first. So that’s why I did these Barbarossa and Guadalcanal.

I may have to try your suggestion however. Now that I think about it. I started with 1941 turn in EOTS. That’s the big one......though not global.

The Japanese are on interior lines in the Pacific. They can attack on either flank, or the center (straight south). Wherever they choose to attack, they must be ready for Allied counter-moves on the other flank(s).

The Allies are on exterior lines. One flank is less able to directly assist the other, although this is not impossible, it just takes extra time. One flank can attack while the other is under attack. A flank can attack from that flank, or can shift over to the center.

To play this out solitaire, pick one of the axes for the Japanese to attack. Decide this before setting them up. Roll a die for the 3 choices for a different game each time.

Then game out the Allied choices. Reinforce the threatened flank, or counter-attack from a flank. Roll a die for this main strategic decision. Then smash the die roll decisions together and see what happens. As soon as these main decisions are made, each side must now re-consider their decisions and make their choices, one impulse at a time. No plan survives contact with the enemy.

There are a lot of dice rollers that will just give you random numbers. The advantage of an email dice roller is that it is secure -- both players know what dice were rolled, and that there opponent didn't make a bunch of rolls and cherry-picked ones he wanted. Both players (or all players in a multi-player game) get email stating what the rolls are, from the dice server.

I imagine that this is not necessary in netplay, but I have not used netplay.

Hello

Check our AAR
https://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=4615461

We play PBEM and use that roller website (to feel good rolling really well, not suspecting someone else to cheat).

We send email after every impulse. I play as Allies with jjdenver. We plan impulse, jjdenver sends instructions
Ground strike
TB-3 hex 59,123

Rail move
INF from Moscow to Sevastopol

Land move
ARM from Smolensk to 65,88
GAR from 45,34 to 45,35

Etc

Then I play entire impulse and do all rolling. After impulse I send file to all players.

I guess now when Barbarossa is starting it’s easier if I send file to jj for land moves.

When we need to ask Axis about interception or something else, we use AAR or WhatsApp.

Thanx Gents,

I really appreciate all the help from all of you very much.

@brian brian as well....thanx for "simplifying" it for me. I did read the scenario description that is similar to what you are saying with regard to the 3 axis of attack for the Japan player and then breaks it down for the Allied player.

I have done the tutorials and will go through them again as needed. I find reading the Volume 1-2 of the Player Manual harder in the sense that I am not following. I saw a suggestion somewhere that said to start with the RAC instead.

Absolutely read RAC first. RAC is the rules. The player's manual explains how the game implements the rules and what the user interfaces are. If you don't know what is being implemented, it won't make much sense.

I suppose that I'm going off on the deep end then. I've finished my Guadalcanal Scenario...Allies dominated because of my poor play....on both sides.

But as you say, why not JUMP IN. I'm going global. But I have no clue what I'm doing.

Ask any questions you have here. You are certain to get answers. If you are lucky, the answers will even be correct.

If you want comments on your play, post an AAR, and ask for comments there. You will get them.

(A hint: Don't have the Axis declare war on the US the first turn. )

heh...I have never done an AAR. Let alone I don't understand the historical strategies involved in some of the decision making with these campaigns. While I don't necessarily want to recreate history, it may be helpful to understand what was done or decisions that were made historically as I make my way through.

How would one go about starting an AAR?; What are the best optional rules to use?; Do you have to have a place to post screenshots?

As for screenshots you can attach one on each of your posts. Just use the post reply button instead of fast reply and you’ll see the option to attach a file.

As for optional rules just go to any of the Global War AARs in the After Action Report forum and see which ones they use.

Go look in the AAR section of the World in Flames part of the forum to see a lot of AARs. As you will see, screenshots are easy.

To start an AAR, just post a message in the AAR section.

As for optional rules, the most critical choice is whether you are using divisions or not. These are literally two different games (WiF Final Edition and WiF Classic.) Most people use divisions, although they make the game more complicated. If you do use divisions, I recommend the 2d10 combat results table.

One should always use Motorized Movement Rates. Otherwise, the best units for moving through mountains and marshes are armored corps, which is just wrong.

One should always use Save Build Points, Fractional Odds, Scrap Units, and Off-City Reinforcements, because they make things easier on the player(s). These are options both sides want to use.

Similarly, one should never use Construction Engineers. That rule is just an exercise in frustration.

As for other rules, see what other people have done. Some rules most people like, some few like, and some are in the middle.

But in my experience, this is how you get the best practical help. You can work through the game at your own pace, and ask questions as things happen and you look at potential strategies. You will always find people here willing to help and no one is going to judge what you do so its a win-win.

So I'm just testing putting a screen in the post. I may very well try to do an AAR. Oh my...I'm thinking I'll use these settings that came from one of the AARs in the other section. Thanx Composer99.

I suggest to choose 2d10 land combat. it’s more friendly to attacker, sometimes you only disorganize half of your units, not all of them. And there are few other benefits, like HQ support always works.

When I started this game I had trouble to know how to work in big picture. Attack to Poland was simple enough for me, but combined with war in Atlantic and war in China caused trouble. If you read some AAR’s you get good tips (mostly ).

And if you create your own AAR, people can advice when you do something they know will be doomed. As German player, don’t attack to Norway even if they did that in real life.

Always remember when wargaming - a lot of the historical commanders were REALLY bad, too.
