Greetings Spearhead.

When I want to discuss Tank Sims, I have found Wargamer has a good forum focused on them here.

http://www.militarygameronline.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=160

There are a number out there. If I had some spare cash, I was thinking Panzer Elite would have been interesting, I have thought the demo was nice.

Seems like a rash of people wanting something for nothing a lot lately.

You won't find anyone receptive to inquiries about "free" ie usurping the pay for it honestly route.

Not to say you were asking that though.

This wargamer lives on a pension for instance. Means I have to be danged choosy and buy ONLY the games I am bang on certain of.

That of course means researching forums and scouting out the options out there.
That's how I ended up selecting Panzer Elite as a hopeful in my interest in finding a tank sim game to fiddle with.

Here is a link that will send you in the direction of Panzer Elite.

http://www.chipsbits.com/cgi-bin/order.cbi_home?client=227686&source=84047&page=catalogs/home.html&newpage=infopages/PANZEG.IR.html

Not all good tanks sims are new, and some can be had for peanuts too.

This is my fav link for gone off the current market sources.

http://www.cdaccess.com/html/pc/4games.htm

But as for free downloads of currently marketed games, nope, can't help you there

I have played the Steel Beasts demo, and graphically it is really quite pleasing to look at.

Controls take a bit of getting used to, but the only downside (its a small down side) is it's a modern sim. Would rather drive WW2 stuff around.

Nah Panzer Commander is even cheaper hehe.

Well it is hard to beat free hehe.

Well in truth whilst lamenting nothing of merit on shelf a good ways back in a local EB, the shop clerk offered me a free copy of Panzer Commander (someone had returned it).

Must say, it is an acceptable game, graphics are no competition for Panzer Elite though.
PE had a rough beginning so I am told though. Missed that myself.

Played the demo only, seen the game on shelf a couple of times. Never had the cash when I need it.

Best tank simulator? WW2OL. No question about it.

Find two (burning) matties from the pic:

They even have free 7 day trial at going at gigex at the moment. (sry abt the pic heavy)

This is the detail in which damage is calculated in the game engine of ww2ol: (in this case a pz3h with the 50mm hitting the front of a char)

quote:

WEAP 5cm38l42_pzgr(147) striking external component mantletarmor(8) of charb1(target1) at 650 m/s, KE 459822 J, thickness 26.00 mm at 83 deg, t = 2660.5900s
WEAP applying 23764.519274 J to mantletarmor
WEAP 5cm38l42_pzgr(147) richocheting off mantletarmor with a thickness of 26.00 mm at 83 deg, t = 2660.5900 s
WEAP 5cm38l42_pzgr(166) striking external component turretfront(5) of charb1(target1) at 665 m/s, KE 481693 J, thickness 46.00 mm at 14 deg, t = 2928.4519 s
WEAP 5cm38l42_pzgr(166) fuse started, timer = 0.0010 s, t = 2928.4519 s
WEAP applying 335950.941587 J to turretfront
WEAP 5cm38l42_pzgr(166) spalling 64 pieces of turretfront
WEAP 5cm38l42_pzgr(166) penetrated turretfront, lost 299 m/s, speed now 366 m/s, t = 2928.4519 s
WEAP 5cm38l42_pzgr(166) detonating, t = 2928.4529 s
WEAP 5cm38l42_pzgr(166) explodes into 44 pieces of shrapnel
WEAP 5cm38l42_pzgr(166) concussive explosion

In short the panzergranate 5cm38l42 hits char's gunmantle, richochets, strikes to turretfront, penetrates and explodes into 44 pieces of sharpnell inside the char causing explosion and killing everyone inside.

I have actually seen very little commentary on Panzer Claws myself.

It almost seems like a game that was released same time as another title that stole all the attention.

I think I have seen commentary to the effect though, that plays it up as a game similar in feel to an improved Sudden Strike.

You can pretty well take that any way you wish though.
