Shadrach: It´s definitely a sound related problem. I uninstalled the game, installed again the 4.0.0.11 version, worked flawlessly, patched to .40 and again took forever to load. Waited so the .ini file could get created, then I checked against the 4.0.0.11 ini and couldn't find differences.
So again changed nosound to Y and game starts. Put it back to N and the game ran fine as well, but with no sound. Background sound and sound effects were turned off in game, changing the background made the game hang, sound effects on make the game slower than normal, but you could still move units.
Did they change some sound setting with the patch? The changelog says nothing about sound.

I wonder if all the guys that have no problems have the sound turned off. Or maybe it is a problem with some PCs.
FYI i installed the game yesterday on a W7 virtual machine and it was the same as on my W10 PC, so that I guess the OS it's not a factor here.

FWIW I always shut down sound on all my games. No issues here.

I'm having the same issue, installed the 4.1.0.40 patch over the 4.0.0.11 version, default directory, running the game it took about 30 minutes to respond, now as I post this it´s over 10 mins trying to load the Kasserine scenario.

Ryzen 5 1600, 16GB RAM, R580 GPU. Windows 10 64

I've noticed that during this whole time, and even now, the program loads a CPU tread (of 12) at a constant 100%.

Something's wrong with the patch.

If it were the patch everyone would have the same problem.

Not necessarily. The patch obviously changed something that make the game unplayable on some PCs. If everything stays the same on my machine, working well, but patching ruined it, then...

Do you have no problems with the sound on?

Zovs

Could you try putting the sound on to see if the game works? That could be helpful.

If I turn music/background on I don't really notice anything major, but turning Sound Effects on there's a *definite* lag the first time a sound is played. For instance moving a unit, it will lag for a bit then it runs fine again.

I've also looked at the threads in Process Explorer. And the biggest CPU-load when the game is 'idle' is the audiere.dll and dsound.dll. BUT - this is even with all sound turned off so I don't think it means a lot

I guess audio issues could be related to type of audio device. I have a Realtek HD Audio device, on-board, and it's pretty much standard stock for desktop gaming-type PCs at least. For laptops there's probably a jungle of different hardware and drivers out there.

If you don't know your audio device specs you can find by opening "System Information" (msinfo) and looking under Components > Sound Device.
There also should be no need to update audio device drivers on newer Windows (8+) as the drivers shipped with it are fine, unless you're running some weird-ass devices ;)

EDIT: I just tested with nosound=Y in the ini. Apparently this completely disables DirectSound (and Audiere with it). So if you have severe issues with audio this is an option.

Interesting. I just have a stock Realtek device and drivers, but apparently the B350 board comes with something called "Nahimic" which is some kind of audio/surround enhancement.
https://www.msi.com/page/nahimic

Maybe if you tried to disable the Nahimic software if it's running?
I'm guessing you've sorted out the issue on your end anyway but it would be an interesting test.

I don´t think I have that, I'm on an Asrock board. And I just formated the disk and reinstalled the OS just a week ago, so it´s pretty much default.

And I don't have it sorted out, I would like to have sound
Interestingly, I don't have any sound, even with sound effects on and the game lagging...

No, it's nosound=N, and as I said, turning on background sounds hangs the game, with sounds efects on game runs slower but I'm not having any sounds.
BTW the oldsound setting makes no difference.

There has been on going sound issues in TOAWIV since release. If you have sound effects on and move a unit the first hex it will move fine, but then there is a two second lag, I assume it is looking for the correct sound file, and the unit finally moves. Everyone's experience varies but there are certainly sound issues.

As far as we know there has been nothing done regarding sound in this patch. At least we have never been asked to test for any sound issues. But then communication between testers and dev is not the greatest and that's being generous. So only Ralph would know if sound has been changed in any way. Add to that the lack of people actively testing and problems will most certainly be missed.

Shadrach,

Thanks much. Your listing confirmed my suspicion about the long pause after installation.

I do -not- have the same scenario listing in the programs scenario directory as you. I have a few of the scenarios but am missing many. For example, the "Custom Graphics" folder is missing entirely. Possibly[?] a permissions issue. I may remove the installation and start from scratch, ensuring the programs are running as administrator. This is confusing; I don't recall problems with file permissions in earlier TOAW installations, but Win10 is involved and its security architecture may be introducing chaos into the process.

At any rate, the 30 minute "grind" I experienced may have been the system trying to write files and being unable to do so. Again, a lack of feedback from the program makes this harder to troubleshoot.

Cheers

Meyer1: Good to hear. There's *definitely* something up with the audio playback in the game, several users have reported the same. Maybe related to the patch, or newer versions of Windows, hardware, drivers or something else. The audio library the game uses is Audiere which is positively ancient and will probably cause all sorts of issues on a modern PC.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Audiere

Problem is, to fix it will probably require a complete rewrite of the audio part of the game...

I've noticed it hangs a lot on audio playback too, but I always turn sound off anyway so I never notice. My advice is turn it off in the options. So are you getting sound now?

According to the manual the options in the ini are "Used to debug the sound system" and should probably be left as-is

Zakblood: Did you clear out the Documents folder first? I you don't and you have previously installed the 4.0.0.11 version you'll have lots of scenarios in that directory and that will not match a default new user install from v4.1.0.20.

makes no difference what hardware your using, it's the driver version which is important, and also what ever junk you have installed that may have or normally corrupts the sound drivers that matters, one wrong nvidia install and the drivers for sound will get overwritten with nvidia sound drivers, just for one, a start, add in any other program which wishes to copy sound drivers on to a pc, anything could be wrong, without a full DXr report it's hard to say and see or guess what's wrong, if you're sure it's sound, do yourself a favor and take it out of main and into tech support and post the required information to get staff support.

Graphics Drivers
Please make sure you have the latest graphics drivers installed if you are experiencing issues starting the game (Nvidia, AMD). This is particularly common on laptops with outdated brand drivers.

Background Applications
Any applications running in the background may negatively affect Gladius. Certain applications can lead to more serious issues such as limited connectivity and game crashes. It is highly recommended that you close all background applications before launching Gladius to ensure the best performance and stability. After you are done playing, feel free to re-enable these applications.

Some applications may load when the operating system starts and are not obviously indicated. For example, they may not appear in the task bar but they may be among some of your active processes or services, using your system's resources. These programs may cause crashes and other difficulties when playing Gladius.

Please see Closing Background Applications below for instructions on disabling non-essential background programs and preventing background applications from silently loading when Windows starts.

Security Applications
Antivirus and firewall software play an important role in your computer security. They help protect your computer from viruses, malware and spyware infections. However, when protecting your computer, they can prevent legitimate programs, like the game, from installing, updating or running. Adding exceptions for the game executables or disabling your security software can help resolve these conflicts.

Note: Some security programs will continue to partially run even when disabled. They may require full uninstallation or reconfiguration to resolve.

If you are not comfortable configuring or uninstalling your security software, please contact your security software's technical support department for assistance. They may also be able to help you configure their product to not interfere with future game installation and patching. Most products have in-software or web forms for reporting false positives.

System Information (Windows)
Additionally you may be requested to provide a snapshot of your computer’s hardware and software configuration to help us diagnose and troubleshoot technical issues.

To obtain the DxDiag file:
1. Press Windows Key + R.
2. Type DxDiag and press Enter.
3. In the DxDiag window, click Save All Information.
4. Name the file "dxdiag" and click Save.

To obtain the MSInfo file:
1. Press Windows Key + R.
2. Type MSInfo32 and press Enter.
3. In the MSInfo diagnostic window, click File, then Export.
4. When the Export As window appears, choose Desktop.
5. Name the file "MSInfo" and click Save.

please upload the log, not post the log, there is a difference

i have one chip onboard for sound, so only have one driver loaded for the one chip, common mistake is to use more than one driver, wrong this will leads to errors, plain and simple

windows reports the latest error's, so if you have one post it, if you have more than one and it's different, then you have more than one error on the pc, plain and simple, but this isn't a problem either, as most error can be hangs, or unable to update ones etc, which can be as simple as no net, or blocked for a given reason, so they aren't error's as such in there own right, unless your not doing something at the time, and the block is on your end and not by you....

Stream Handler, Preferred means you have the right drivers for a given software to run, but that's not to say it's the correct driver for it, common mistake and error, it's wrong.

DirectShow Filters, a easy one, if you have ever downloaded a audio codec pack from online, then 9 out of 10 times you may have a broken codec, so a file that the pc can no longer play, fact, these are known errors that break sound from working, the same packs come with most of the time, a codec repair tool, to put them back to default or repair them, as most won't or don't need the packs in the first place, why break something that's not broken?

driver date, if it's not the latest version with the latest most stable and most bug fixed version, why not? and don't use beta unless you really know what your doing, as no one supports or gives tech support for beta driver version, plain and simple....

Jesus, zakblood, you should stop posting like a bot and start listening to people.
As I said, I have a new W10 installation, no extra sound devices, no beta drivers, plus the game works just fine with any other version than the latest .40 patch, and I'm just one of several users that reported the same problem, surely there's something with the patch?
I won't bother posting in the tech forum, because there´s already a post with this problem and the person that should take a look at that is MIA as I understand it.

So I continued testing, I think I found something:

-uninstanlled the game, installed 4.0.0.11, worked fine as expected. Did a backup of all the files (root directory, and "mygames" folder.
-Installed .40 patch: game hangs, killed the process without waiting 30mins or so to start. Looked at the TOAW folder in the "MyGames" doc folder, noticed that the "Sound" folder was empty, weird. So i copied the sound files from the 4.0.0.11 folder to the now empty sound folder and, Voilà, game works fine now, with sounds and everything.
-And finally I uninstalled again, installed 4.0.0.11, patched to .40, and without start the game, there are only two folders in the doc folder, no sound nor Myfonts folders. See pic

So in a preliminary conclusion, it's not a per se sound problem, but an issue with the creation of the files in the MyGames TOAW folder, that results in a sound problem, and according to the changelog the folder structure was something that was touched in this release.
I guess that most of the guys here play with no sound so that avoided massive complains from the old timers.

Or, many of them do play with sound, but the did a backup of the MyGames TOAW folder so they avoided the problem.

And Shadrach, now I have officially sorted it out

Maybe not so interesting story here,
but when my Win10 HD crashed, I had to migrate to an old Win7 machine ...

I had an issue w/ the old sound card on that, finally got it working w/ headphones so that I could listen w/ headphones at least to my internet radio stations.

Over time, I started to notice that in the background was some very soft music playing ....

Came to find, it was TOAWIV, serenading me in the background! Barely audible,
but it was working.

Still, I killed that QUICK, I did,
I just supply the noises in my head for TOAW now.

Ka-POW for artillery,
"shucka shucka shucka" when helicoptering,
and "ch-ch-ch-ch CHOOOO....CHOOOOOOOOOOO!!!" when railing.

YMMV!

Meyer1: Yeah, as I think I said earlier, on first startup the game will copy the Sounds and My Fonts from the install folder, as well as create the default ini files. Somewhere along with that, and likely in some way related to audio playback, the game hangs.

Anyway, glad you've got it sorted out.

And as much as I actually enjoy this kind of detective work (believe it or not...), even if we manage to find an actual repeatable case and a probable cause, I wouldn't get my hopes up for anything ever being fixed. It's become clear that the Powers That Be are convinced absolutely nothing at all is wrong with the game and that we all must be idiots doing things wrong for having these issues...

Have a Happy TOAW-playing New Year!

I have every confidence that some day, before I am 70yo,
that TOAW V will be available for us to purchase.

And all of us will then rejoice!
And add another "notch" to our gun belts!

In the mean time...Have a great New Year!

Just did a regular patch and nothing else. No sound problems at all. Here are the items that deal with files.

BUG FIXES:
8. Open/Save operations for OOB, Map, and Unit objects fixed.
14. File Open should prefer Document folder over Program Files folder.
15. Graphics search now includes Program File/Graphics Override folder.
20. “New Game” button will find the latest scenario version to run from multiple directories.

But there's a difference, after the install of the release version, without running the game, there are 4 folders in the MyGames location )Sounds, Fonts, Graphic Override and Scenarios) while after patching, as seen in the pic, only the Graphic Override and Scenario folders are there.

That's interesting. I just don't have much imagination, also to provide the sounds from my head I should know what the heck is going on the battles, and many of the times I don't!

I'd stick with the actual sounds, thank you :)

Happy new year!

Of course all these problems started with the Steam release, as if we didn't have already overworked our code guy

Many years ago, a 1st Sargent in the USMC said to me: "That is all F***up. Go unf***k it. In the world I now live in, things here do not get unf***ked. OPAWIV is all f***ked up. Even this Marine cannot unf**k it. Let alone some inflated flyboy using the assumed name of Curtis Lemay. Such shame does exist in this world.
