New player here ( I am somewhat well read on the eastern front, but don't understand the game mechanics). I think my understanding of "refit" and the use of the unit "refit" button in game is different. My understanding of refit in a military context is that ideally a unit is pulled off the line (or if still on the front line, then at least in a quiet zone) to conduct tasks that are difficult to do effectively when the offensive/defensive operational tempo is high.

For example these tasks can be done more effectively without being under stress: intake of replacement personnel, conducting higher level maintenance, conducting training/ re-training, swapping of old equipment for new, more rest than usual etc etc.

However, from what I've gathered from reading posts and the manual, is that if you place a unit on refit, then the unit (with the refit button on) gets replacements faster than units that are not on refit. So by selectively placing units on refit, you can prioritize who gets replacements. Am I off track here? Thanks.

I should add, that I am concerned that if I put my frontline units on refit and leave it on that it will negatively affect that units combat power. Because I'm thinking that idea of "refit" also equates to a relaxed/ vulnerable mode, as per my understanding of the term in real life.

Refit prioritises replacements up to 100% TOE and under certain circumstances increases morale quicker.

Use it selectively to create super units.

Note : There is no point in having a unit on refit if the missing elements are not in the pool or being produced by your production.

Thanks Ajax. Just to clarify though, there is no combat penalty for them being on refit 100 percent of the time right?

Also refit works better when off your units are off the front line. (even better on a railhead). Place divisions in refit that you want to prioritize replacements too because there is only so much to go around. That's where setting your TOE comes into play.

No penalty to having it on all the time.

Thanks King, very helpful. I guess now I need to figure out the production/ replacement system, so I can see what is coming in versus what I'm losing.

No problem! Feel free to ask any questions. This game has a lot to figure it out. By far the best ww2 eastern front game i have ever played.

Not that I'm aware of but Refit is downgraded when adjacent to an enemy unit, so ideally it is best to pull them out of the line

Also fortification is affected. And fortification happens in your enemies logistics phase. So if you leave a unit on refit it will have a lower fortification level than it otherwise would do when your opponent gets to do their turn. So yes in that sense you are creating a combat penalty for it.

There is also a subtle argument that having more units on refit in the frontline means more men are subject to attrition in your logistics phase. This means you lose more men overall. I have never tested this to be sure. And to some extent it is a trivial point - if you had no one in the battle than of course you will have no losses. But to win the war you need men there.
