These new silhouettes are pretty nice, and I say this as somebody who vastly prefers symbology. You are actually tempting me to try this.

I usually play with symbols too. But I just had to give it a go. I have tried to keep it 'clean'. I quite like it, will publish this soon.

In the screenshots only the German Armor is black. I can make the other countries' armor black too.

Not sure.

How do you like the Garrison status flag?

The garrison status flag works. It informs without being an eyesore. You got the size right on this. That said, you could arguably drop it. The white highlights on the unit strength kind of do the job by themselves.

PanzerUnits Mod Version 4:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/nrj1mzztb5wxdiq/PanzerUnits_v4.zip?dl=0
The latest and the greatest! The file contains two versions: one with NATO symbols and one with silhouettes. You choose!

First post updated as well.

Please chime in and share your thoughts. Any constructive criticism is welcome!

Just downloaded. I am a NATO guy, but the silhouettes are just too good to not use!

Thanks for your efforts. Combined with those of the dev, this game will provide enjoyment for a long time.

Just noticed the HQ figure standing "outside" of the unit icon in-game. You remind me of the best artist I ever had when working in publishing. Bon travail!

Thanks for the kind words. This is actually my first go at a graphical mod for a game. Until 6 weeks ago, I never used anything fancier than MS paint, hehehe.

I started grappling with GIMP for this mod. GIMP is great, but quite daunting to get into. Steep learning curve. But I seem to get the hang of it.

Before this little warplan mod, I did quite a lot of scenario design for Combat Mission (Battlefront). Some of them were included in the official releases. But I needed a break from that. It is very labor intensive and not easy let me tell you. Very satisfying though. And it is always nice if players chime in and let you know what they thought of your work.

Thanks Rosseau!

As far as the map is concerned, I think version 3.2 is as far as I can take it. At this point I am just correcting really minor mistakes at the pixel level that you will probably hardly notice. The look and feel is what I intended. Spicier graphics without trying to overdo it.

I am pretty pleased with the weather graphics at this point. It can be really hard to get them right because I am so limited by the game itself. Some weather graphs look really great over a land tile, but not so much over an ocean tile. You can not distinguish between them: they are only one graphic. So many things need to be a compromise therefore.

I also tried scaled down real life graphics on the map (for example for fortifications), but it simply does not cut it. Better to stick with more cartoon like graphics for lack of a better word. It just looks better in the end.

For the units mod I tried so many things. Some love to put graphics on them and I understand why. Those pictures look so cool. But once you cut them down to size on a small counter, the pictures do not look that great anymore. And even then you are even more constrained by the hard coded things on the counters that often interfere with your nice little tank graphic that you so painstakingly crammed upon it. So I decided to stick with NATO symbols. Exception being the planes. And optionally for HQ counters (but I can understand perfectly some players really dislike that solution, though I always use them).

Getting the black armor right is especially frustrating. Still have not found a satisfactory solution. The hard coded stuf is mostly black. Alvaro says he can not provide a white outline for the black numbers. Black on black it is then. And there things start to fall apart. That is why I have not provided black armor counters; I just feel they do not look the part.

That being said, if anybody has an idea that just might work, let me know and I will give it a shot!!

Units looking great. Excited to see black NATO panzer unit symbols.

A few comments about the latest units (symbols).

- Can you tone down a bit the red for the Soviet units color? Or supply a variant units file on this?
- Likewise for the Swiss, or just give them another color. With that red, every time I look at central Europe, it has me thinking Soviets. Also it seems just too bright for me. I wish the game did not place neutrals on the map until they were at war.
- When will you release a variant for the black German pazner and/or mech units? Would love to try that.

Great work! Keep it up.

Check it out:

Panzer Units Mod Version 4.1:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/nz3zvsra2t3eqt4/PanzerUnits_v4_1.zip?dl=0
This is a minor update of version 4. Changelog is in the zip file. Zip contains 3 files. Two are units with NATO symbols, but one of them has black Armor and Mech counters for the Germans only if you like that.
The third file contains units with silhouettes. Whatever you prefer. I also changed the color of the Swiss entirely to something far more inconspicuous. The Swiss are there forever, since nobody conquers Switzerland, so I decided to make them less of an eyesore.

First post of the thread updated.

Hi Panzer Mike I tried to install your units mode without results. Probably I did something wrong. Will try to explain. In the folder Documents/Mygames/Warplan/Campaigns I tried to paste one of your beautiful png file (just copying it in the folder) I tried to copy it in almost all the folders I found there but no joy!! Forgive me for my inexperience. Can you give me some more detailed info about the procedure to be followed? Thanks so much.

TY for Your prompt response I did as You show but again no joy. As far as the Units.png I decompressed the file with german black armour on desktop then I renamed it then I pasted it into the folder. Is it correct?

Nope, if you want the latest unit mod, just pick 4.1
They are not cumulative.

In the unit mod zip file there are multiple .png files. Unzip the zip file. Click on the .png you want to play with (after you unzipped them). Rename that file to units.png and copy it to the campaign map.

I did include some instructions in a text file in the mod zip file, are they not clear enough perhaps?

Weird. It is really simple, so what could go wrong (besides a wonky install of the game itself).

Good to know, admiral3. And enjoy the game.

@profender: installation of the mod is really very straightforward, so if it does not work something is probably wrong with the install of your game. I don't know how many people use my mod (I am guessing in the hundreds) and have not heard any troubles thus far. Not with the png files anyway. So I hope you figure it out.
