I've been playing WITP:AE since about 2010, if I remember right. I've been reading these forums for many years, though I only posted rarely. There has never been a shortage of excellent AARs to follow, and even when I had no time to play, they at least gave me a taste now and then - not to mention teaching me everything I know about the game. I have more disposable time these days, and I feel it's high time I throw my hat into the ring and enter the glorious world of PBEM games, so I've made my post in Opponents Wanted.

My education in wargames started at age 12 or so, when my father gave me Panzer General as a gift (I don't recall the occasion.) I used to love playing the long campaigns, using political power to influence where you'd go next and altering the course of history. On the flip side, I'd always get a kick out of playing the allies in early scenarios and holding in Poland, Norway, or France. I eventually played all the games in the 5-star series (except Star General, but I hear I didn't miss much.) Then followed a different flavor of strategy games as I delved into Star Wars and Star Trek titles, but an itch remained that I could not scratch until I found the original War In The Pacific in 2007. I played it often, despite its shortcomings. When I learned about Admiral's Edition, I paid the fee and never looked back.

This game fulfills my gaming needs in a way that I never thought would be possible. I just didn't think an audience existed for a game with the scale and complexity I wanted, but this community, still thriving so many years after the game's release, proves I was wrong. In all the time I've played, I never felt like I had the time to commit to a PBEM game, but times have changed, and I've posted my first challenge in Opponents Wanted. I look forward to chatting with you all about this fantastic game.

Thank you. I picked up many things by reading AARs and then asking questions that, in hindsight, appear to be stupid.

I know what you mean. It's hard to keep it all straight in such a complex game, but the fact that there's always something more to learn is a big part of its appeal for me.

Good to see you enter the fray WNV!
RJ, these days most of my learning is of the painful lesson kind!
It's a good thing I can't remember what happened a few days ago!

Have fun, enjoy the weather. Do so in a nice recliner, a nice quilt, soft music, a book, a cup of hot chocolate with creme de menthe with whipped creme on it, a nice young female to cuddle with (even if it is just a cat!) and look outside at the beautiful weather.

Welcome! Your timing is interesting to me because your post just described me. I’ve been lurking since the UV days, playing the AI, but my career made me too unreliable a partner for PBEM. I just picked up my first game with a real opponent this week and the feel is already different. I like it. I hope you will too. Look forward to seeing you around.

Welcome to you both! And I fully agree, playing a human is so much more interesting than playing against the AI. However it does make demands upon your time, that's why I'm currently playing against the AI. Humans are so much more unpredictable as Mr. Spock would say. No logic to them at all. Good luck.

Hi, welcome home.

Good luck in PBEM.

Thanks a lot! Working on my very first turn now. I haven't done any kind of PBEM since I played Fantasy General against my cousin something like 20 years ago. I think he ragequit on me at one point, so I must have been doing reasonably well.

Hi! Your AARs are incredibly educational, not to mention entertaining. I'm catching up on your latest, but I'm barely in April '42, so don't spoil anything.

Thanks! Your newbie AARs are awesome, by the way. They would have really helped me tackle the learning curve in the early days. As of now, I'm about halfway up said curve, holding on with my remaining teeth.

Well then, welcome to you, too! I'm sure many WITP:AE players don't engage in PBEM out of fear of disappointing a respected opponent. For my part, I finally decided that I'm an adult, dammit, and I can prioritize my life however I damn well please, and the fact that I've wanted to do this for about a decade now is ample reason to finally make it happen. Good luck in your match!

Thanks, dr.hal. I imagine that unpredictability is where the extra fun comes in. I certainly intend to provide some unpredictability of my own.
