I don't see disruption(-) for the defenders. Did you bombard with all your ships in all your fleets before the attack?

Not all, but at least a half dozen TFs made runs on it. I also bombed troops with every B24, B29, B25, A20, F6, P82, Lancaster and Lincoln in my inventory. B17s hit the airfield.

Yokohama only fell a few days prior so bombardment runs just started. Will be moving Evey available TF to Yokohama while the battered ground troops recover.

Allied AV dropped from just under 20k to 13k.

I"m currently playing a vs AI version of Focus Pacific and I ended up in a similar situation to you ... like 10k AV of Japanese troops holed up in Tokyo with like 2,000,000 supplies.

I tried assaulting (same as you did) and, while I could occasionally knock the forts down they rebuilt fast ... there are, no joke, 6,000 engineers and something like 500 engineering vehicles in Tokyo, so even if I totally destroy the airfield and ports every turn, they get fully repaired and have enough to work on the forts.

One gamey tactic I have been playing with is pulling troops out of Tokyo to the point where the AI triggers its auto attack mechanic and impales itself on my troops.

Its not clear to me that its physically possible to take Tokyo any other way ... I think with the game mechanics the way they are its not doable in the timeframe of the game.

Massive sustained firepower. Bomb all the facilities, bomb down the industry.

BBs and CAs running shore bombardment relays from Yokohama. 3-4 + escorts per TF may be more effective than 15 BBs in one TF, but YMMV. The exe may turn off industry repair, but will likely attempt to repair the port/airfield/fortifications; the engineers that do this consume supply. Then start bombing the troops so they eat the supply. Check the scenario file to see if the scenario designer has edited in some daily supply dump of 2000 units or similar. That is your baseline, you have to cause damage that will elevate daily expenditure to > 2000. The AI may attempt to repair/reinforce some air-groups from pools... if so good, it will eat supply and you just keep the airfield at 50-100% damaged.

After you are reasonably sure there has been net zero supply for a while, think about commencing ground assaults, and then wait while you bombard it for another month anyway.

Eventually the troops go in, 100% prepped. You only need one Command HQ, and one corps or army HQ 100% prepped with your very best leaders assigned. You will lose a lot of combat engineers, so keep some back to put into further attacks. Attack with lots of tanks. Thousands of tanks. Turn off replacements to those units so the infantry squads do not get replaced, and keep on attacking with tanks. Backed up by thousands of artillery pieces. Attack, rest for a few days, and attack again, rest and maybe rotate some troops, and attack again.

Actually, strip out the soft devices out of your tank units before they go in. Air transports should do the job.

In the official standard scenarios it is possible to capture Tokyo from the computer opponent.  Very difficult and time consuming, but doable nonetheless.  The dev wdolson posted how he achieved it.

All bets are off regarding non official scenarios.  Notwithstanding any protestations to the contrary from their designers, all of them further favour the Japanese side.

I haven't played a turn in some time and am struggling with supply.

I have so much force ashore in the HI that I can't keep it supplied.

Offensive actions are on hold everywhere except Hokkaido and I have only 5 weeks left to play.

A big influx of supply is two weeks out and I may get one more chance for a second round at Tokyo, but will not have adequate time to get the supply problem solved and make the necessary 8+ more rounds of combat that it would require to take the base.

The game will end with Tokyo under siege.

You can capture Tokyo relatively easily with no immediate gamey tricks. However this requires a strategy, that is also a kind of trick that relies on game mechanics. Especially useful against Ironman AI which has zillions of additional units

Most of the units accumulated in Tokyo are those you destroyed elsewhere, and then they revive and refill in the national capital. So the strategy is to deny reviving to the Japanese. Keep destruction of their forces to the minimum and instead leave their units either untouched or kept surrounded somewhere (like POW camps). When you come to Tokyo you would find a far thinner roster waiting for you

I once took Tokyo in either an Andy Mac Ironman scenario or Ian R's "The Long Road to Tokyo" (which is an Ironman adaptation with more Allied toys) on my current computer. I did a lot of shore bombardment but very little aerial bombardment since flak was deadly. I probably had at least half of all non-restricted infantry, armor, combat engineers and artillery in on the attack. It was very much a multinational effort. I'll see if I can dig up a combat report. One of the benefits of Ironman scenarios is you can eventually capture huge amounts of supply on the Home Islands, thereby obviating the need to send convoys.

Several years ago on an old computer I initiated an attack on Tokyo, went to sleep, and woke up the next day with the turn still processing. I cut the game at that point.

EDIT: Hans: Did you not capture a lot of supply at Nagasaki, Fukuoka, Kobe or Osaka? If I recall correctly, at least two of those were huge dumps in my last game.

Cheers,
CB

Cheers,
CB

No I didn't get any windfalls on taking major bases. I bled most of them dry of supply while reducing their forts.

I also did the exact opposite of what GetAssista recommends in that I made a point of chasing down and destroying every last Japanese LCU in my path.

I have never been able to get Long Road to Tokyo to run.

Very disappointed as I was really looking forward to trying that one.

I never could work out why it ran on some machines, but not others. When I got a new computer with 8Gb Ram it loaded happily.

I found the Long Road to Tokyo installation last night after I got back from the pub and I dug up the fateful combat report from 2017. I've attached it if anyone wants to look at it. I think I did a fair amount of shore bombardment and I also don't think most of those IJ units in Tokyo were very filled out. Talking about overkill: I had 80,843 AV vs. 749 (adjusted to 19:1).

As I think about it, this particular game may not have had so much supply waiting for me on the home islands. I think lack of supply slowed me down a bit and I couldn't base any bombers on the HI until I organized some huge supply convoys.

Cheers,
CB

Hans,

If I remember correctly, someone sent me a first turn file of Long Road and that worked. If you're interested, I could try to dig it up at home (just started work on Monday morning here while the rest of y'all watch the Super Bowl).

Cheers,
CB
