That sub attack on Soryu was shown as being near Shanghai. Why would they go to HK for repairs instead of Shanghai?

The other sub now in contact with a carrier group is well past Shanghai and the TF is heading west. Purely guessing it is the same group.

INVADED
Taung Gyi, Bhamo are invested.

CHANGED OWNERSHIP

Overall

• Pearl Harbor figures 99 days to repair Essex plus adding 60% to the time to repair Hornet, so Essex will head for the West Coast.

West Coast USA, Alaska, Hawaii

• Wasp will begin her AA upgrade tonight.

Pacific

• No sub action!

• We continue moving to consolidate our holdings and recon the many remaining islands. Makin is occupied by at least 1,600 enemy.

Philippines

DEI, Dutch new Guinea, Borneo, Malaya

India, Burma, Thailand, Indochina

• All but one of the sub contacts disappeared. Must be a glitch in the matrix.

• It looks like 7 days needed for our division to arrive. The good news is that our supply drop is having a big impact. We activated many smaller, more fragile bombers to stall the Imperial recovery at Bhamo to reduce their offensive power. Will it give us enough time?

True air battles with LRCAP against escorts and raiders on both sides. We know there are lots of grounded fighters at Lashio but recon has degraded and while the bombers hit the base hard they got only one fighter on the ground.

The P-40K and George A2A losses are not from battles reported, they are the unsung LRCAP battles! The P-47D2 are in the fray too but had only an ops loss.

A hard day. Although good, we are replacing our P-47D2 pilots with the best in the pool and that should make a difference.

The vanquished, stiffened by the dug-in 26th Indian Bde. The HQ's and the base force are almost wiped out so I hope they make it to Myitkyina before the hammer falls. Tomorrow our 4EB's will take up strikes on the enemy moving out of Bhamo. The 2EB and smaller bombers will stand down while the escort fighters recover. Bhamo now being enemy means our fighters can sweep there, we'll have to see how much difference that makes against the Emperor's George's, which are clearly being flown by their best.

Allied forces CAPTURE Ebon !!!

• Less than a week for 2x USN fleet CV's.

West Coast USA, Alaska, Hawaii

• BB Maryland is entering dry dock in Bremerton for an estimated 72 days of repairs.

Pacific

• Their ASW groups are venturing farther from Truk. I wonder if a quick carrier raid might catch some? Enterprise will be back on station soon (I presume the CVE TF's would not move quickly enough to avoid early detection).

Although they got smoked in the air, our P-38's won overall thanks to the ops battle. The P-38G squadron still needs to stand down to recover and reequip. It's partner unit is in the midst of upgrading to the P-38H model, which has greatly improved climb rate. The P-47D2 squadron, a great plane but with mediocre climb rate, will be ready to fly again sooner, and the USMC F4U-1 squadron has moved from Akyab to join it at Dimapur. Both squadrons have cherry picked pilots for their next go.

• We have adequate fighter coverage at Akyab, but we've shifted two P-40K groups that were resting to Cox's Bazar to aid in coverage or potentially even strike escort. The enemy CV group shows 39 fighters and 24 bombers and scouts a CV. Bad weather seems to explain why they had such poor targeting data that strikes were not launched against other targets in the area.

Major RN assets are at Colombo, including Victorious, Hermes, POW, Repulse, and many CA and CL. The two slow BB currently in theater are at Madras and are not spotted. Are they an asset or a liability in this situation?

So, are there additional IJN carriers waiting just outside of search range to pounce on our reaction forces? We've extended search by 4EB, which was concentrated to address the submarine menace, so that we will have search almost as far as Victoria Point tomorrow.

All forces will sortie from Colombo to pursue, but we have a distinct shortage of destroyers to escort the capital ships.

The Corsair sweep was first and did all the damage. The P-47's found empty skies and there was no fighter resistance to the bombers later on.

The enemy carriers are in the center, 5 hexes SW of our TF of 2x old CA and 1x DD. that TF will patrol NE into the night, then turn SE, to try and catch the IJN CL/DD force which destroyed our two HDML.

Our two old BB are 7 hexes west of the IJN carrier, so why didn't they launch? Weather might have done it, but I wonder if the strike aircraft had a short range setting to prevent them from flying against ships near the Arakan, which truly would be a hornet's nest for them.

South of Ceylon are, left to right, CV Victorious and CVL Hermes, POW and Repulse, and a large group of CA's. As mentioned yesterday destroyers are in short supply but each group has at least one. Our carrier group has a DL of 1/1.

Our old BB's will move south and west, but not too smartly. Our other three groups will move a little east and mostly north. We'll just have to see what impact that DL of our carriers has.

"... near the Arakan"?

That stretch of land along the coast which (on the game map) terminates at Akyab.

Wikipedia link:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arakan

The introduction/summary:
quote:

Arakan (/ˈærəkæn/ ARR-ə-kan or /ˈɑːrəkɑːn/ AR-ə-kahn[1]) is a historic coastal region in Southeast Asia. Its borders faced the Bay of Bengal to its west, the Indian subcontinent to its north and Burma proper to its east. The Arakan Mountains isolated the region and made it accessible only by sea. The region now forms the Rakhine State in Myanmar.

Arakan became one of the earliest regions in Southeast Asia to embrace Dharmic religions, particularly Buddhism and Hinduism. Islam arrived with Arab merchants in the 8th century. From the 15th century, Islamic influence grew during Arakan's vassalage to the Bengal Sultanate. The Kingdom of Mrauk U emerged as an independent Arakanese kingdom for 300 years. During the Age of Discovery and Bengal Subah's major economic development, Arakan caught the interest of the Dutch East India Company and the Portuguese Empire. In the middle of the 17th century, it was dominated by the Islamic Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb. Arakan steadily declined from the 18th century onwards after its loss to the Mughal Empire.

After conquest by the British East India Company, Arakan became one of the divisions of British India and received settlers from the neighboring Chittagong Division of the Bengal Presidency. In 1937, it became a division of British Burma. Arakan Division was once a leading rice exporter. During the Second World War, the region was occupied by Imperial Japan. The Allied Forces liberated Arakan during the Burma Campaign. It continued to be an administrative division after Burmese independence; and later became a province. In the early 1960s, the northern part of Arakan was governed from Rangoon as the Mayu Frontier District.

In 1982, the Burmese nationality law stripped many inhabitants of the region of their citizenship. In 1989, the Burmese military junta changed the official name of Burma to Myanmar. In the 1990s, the junta changed the name of Arakan State to Rakhine State — a name reflecting the dominance of the Rakhine majority.[2] Many in the Rohingya minority strongly opposed the move. The region has seen conflict between the Burmese state, Rakhine nationalists and Rohingya rebels. In more recent times, Rakhine State has been notable for the exodus of refugees into neighboring countries because of military operations by the Tatmadaw (Myanmar Army).

In this book you get an idea of how nasty the terrain was for the Allies trying to push the IJA out of Burma.

1943 July 10

The enemy carrier force scouts as several carriers in two TF, sporting 200 bombers and 150 fighters. Luckily our more substantial forces did not catch that tiger. None of our TF are spotted, and all will flee the Bay. The cruisers will move the first day at high speed as their need to round Ceylon makes them apt to be caught if the KB's move westward.

The good news is that in the sync bug our Corsairs and Thunderbolts did not fly and our B-24's were savaged.

So the sync bug appears to have worked for you this time.
