HMS Prince of Wales will be visiting Liverpool at the end of the month. Members of the public will be able to step on board over the weekend of 29 February – the first time one of the new aircraft carriers has been officially open to visitors.

Status: offline 		Quick question. Are active US carriers of any class open to tours whereby the public can buy tickets to tour them? God, I hope not.

Status: offline 		US ships can be visited They are the public's ships. The ships get rigged for visitors which means anything classified gets covered up but yes they do have tours.

Status: offline 		I don't know about carriers but I've been on the USS Normandy (AEGIS cruiser) in Norfolk after it returned from D-DAY commemorations some years back. And here in CT we've had a few frigates and a DDG-51 in harbor and open for tours. Always enjoy those. The crews are great hosts. The highlight was the CIC of the Normandy. Lots covered up but the screens were all active replaying a day in the Med. Fascinating.

Status: offline 		I was on board Nimitz-class carrier USS Carl Vinson when I visited USA in 1993. It was docked in Seattle and tour was free. Tour consisted of browsing the hangar (with displayed M16s, flags, photos etc.) and then going up to the flight deck (with elevator) and checking out the whole deck. Touching the F-14s and F-18s was the best part!

Status: offline 		I toured LHA-1 Tarawa about 20 years ago (so that's a carrier, right?). It was a SF Fleet Week and ships were open to the public. Came aboard one of the cargo doors on the side, checked out the well deck and followed the ramp up to the flight deck. Hung out with demos of Marine Recon, the LAV platoon and on the flight deck with crews of Harriers, Whiskey Snakes and Super Stallions along with a demo of the Avenger ADA vehicle (got to centroid track a light plane with the thermal imager!).

The George Washington made an appearance in the Bay and shot off one Hornet before turning around to go somewhere else (SD? Everett?), so it wasn't open to a tour. Besides a great show by the Blue Angels one thing I won't forget is a UH-1N with a string of Marines dangling off a SPIE rig flying over the headlands and over the Golden Gate Bridge.

Just thought I'd also mention that just outside the gates of the Submarine Base New London (which is across the river in Groton actually), is the Submarine Museum. Free. Really great exhibits. And the highlight is a self guided tour of the USS Nautilus (SSN-571). You get a little hand held telephone thing that plays a loop in each compartment you visit. The ship is outfitted just like it could go to sea tomorrow. Of course you can't go aft to the engine room but you can tour the forward end of the sub.

It was quite a day years ago seeing the Nautilus come up the river to the museum. Big escort of small craft. We watched from the windows at work.

If you are in the area, it's really worth a visit. Just a couple miles north of I-95 in Groton, CT.

Status: offline 		I've been on the USS Hampton (SSN-767) a long time ago. Got to walk between torpedo racks and look through the scope - very cool experience!

Status: offline 		I remember Fleet Week in Alameda in 1980 or 81. We got to go on Coral Sea. Another year we went on the sub USS Barbel across the Bay in SF. Pretty cool for a 10 year old navy geek.

It seems that all of the tickets for the HMS Prince of Wales visit were snapped up almost straight away. They were free.
