The Australians won't hold for long, taking all of the casualties. B-25s will try to bomb them today...

Cheers for being creative on the moral support front! Those Aussies need some discipline to be useful

Sorry about the unfortunate mis-type! The Aussies have a tough job, trying to hold the inland base, cutting the rail line. We're doing all we can to help them. It's a race to see if they can hold long enough for reinforcements to arrive.

Hold until relieved. Hold until relieved! (Brit reference, but it works)

"Hold until relieved." From the movie "The Longest Day", after the Brit commandoes capture a bridge behind the D-day beachhead and the commander surveys the scene while his orders play out in his thoughts. I am trying to remember if it was Sean Connery playing the Brit commander.

Sean Connery (a Scotsman) portrayed an Irish Commando who came ashore on D-Day. He said that it took an Irishman to play the pipes.

Richard Todd portrayed Major Howard at the bridge. He actually was one of those who went to the relief of the paratroopers at the bridge during the war.

Gotta love it when the casting people work a real life connection into the roles!

Kind of mean to your readers to tease the big CV battle and then talk about logistics!

20 Aug 43

Battleships Mississippi and Idaho bombarded Kendari. 551 casualties but no combat squads, all support. Moderate base damage. Three more slow BBs to bombard today, in preparation for the first deliberate attack at Kendari.

25 Sallys tried to bomb Ankang. 25 P-40N1s were waiting. Almost all Sallys were shot down.

Now for the main course.

15 Corsairs swept Balikpapan, downing some Zeros. 35 B-24s dropped mines at Balikpapan.

In the morning, the enemy carriers were spotted right where they were yesterday, adjacent to Balikpapan. All Allied task forces were now six hexes away from the enemy carriers, but not spotted. The Allied CVE task force reacted one hex towards the enemy. No carrier planes attacked from either side, presumably due to weather.

In the afternoon, the Allie CVE task force again reacted, moving another hex closer to the enemy. The fireworks began as they always do, with the Japanese striking first. (The strikes are really simultaneous. The Japanese strikes always get listed first.)

Afternoon Air attack on TF, near Madjene at 65,102

Weather in hex: Heavy rain

Raid detected at 80 NM, estimated altitude 13,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 20 minutes

Japanese aircraft

Japanese aircraft losses
A6M5 Zero: 9 destroyed
B6N1 Jill: 17 destroyed, 4 damaged
B6N1 Jill: 2 destroyed by flak
D4Y1 Judy: 7 destroyed, 10 damaged

CVL Hermes (hit by a dud torpedo)
CVE Altamaha, Bomb hits 1, on fire

Massive explosion on CVE Breton
Ammo storage explosion on CVE Breton

CVE Breton sank right after combat. The second enemy strike went after the big US carrier task forces, and found a much stronger CAP.

Afternoon Air attack on TF, near Madjene at 65,104

Weather in hex: Heavy cloud

Raid detected at 116 NM, estimated altitude 11,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 30 minutes

D4Y1 Judy: 2 destroyed by flak

No Allied losses

Allied Ships
CV Hornet
CV Victorious, Bomb hits 1 (did not penetrate the armor deck)
CV Enterprise
BB Indiana

The next attack was just 9 Jills with 11 Zeros, going after the big carriers. All were shot down before getting to the targets. Still 155 Hellcats overhead.

Time for the Allied attacks.

Afternoon Air attack on TF, near Balikpapan at 65,98

I had my big carriers split up, with strikes set at two different altitudes. My second strike then arrived.

A third, smaller strike, was next. Enemy CAP was weakening but still got some dive bombers.

Afternoon Air attack on TF, near Balikpapan at 65,98

Then a strike from the CVE task force arrived. The Allied pilots were not as trained as the big carrier pilots.

Afternoon Air attack on TF, near Balikpapan at 65,98

Weather in hex: Heavy cloud

Raid detected at 79 NM, estimated altitude 12,000 feet.

CA Chikuma

7 Jills then tried to sneak in, but 148 Hellcats easily prevented that.

Unescorted US bombers then attacked, finding a mostly non-existent CAP. Too bad some of the bombers turned tail and ran.

Afternoon Air attack on TF, near Balikpapan at 65,98

Weather in hex: Heavy cloud

Raid detected at 10 NM, estimated altitude 15,000 feet.

Then another unescorted attack, now against no CAP.

Afternoon Air attack on TF, near Balikpapan at 65,98

Weather in hex: Heavy cloud

Raid detected at 48 NM, estimated altitude 14,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 20 minutes

Japanese aircraft
A6M5 Zero x 1
A6M5b Zero x 1

Allied aircraft
SB2C-1C Helldiver x 35

No Japanese losses

Allied aircraft losses
SB2C-1C Helldiver: 1 damaged

CL Natori, Bomb hits 3

Fuel storage explosion on CVL Zuiho
Ammo storage explosion on CVL Zuiho
Ammo storage explosion on CVL Ryujo

9 TBFs then tried to sneak in and did so, but all torpedoes missed.

It was a bad day for the Japanese. I was unlucky that the CVEs reacted ahead of the big carriers. Fewer, and maybe none, of them would have been lost if covered by the heavy CAP that the big carriers provided. The CVEs did draw half of the attention, though, and spared the big carriers completely.

Total air losses were:

81 Judys
69 Zeros
98 Jills

29 SBDs
19 TBFs
14 F6Fs
7 SB2Cs
5 F4Us
3 FM-1s
1 Sea Hurri

Only 26 Allied pilots were KIA. 17 naval fighter pilots became aces. One became an "ace in a day". Two became double aces.

CVE Breton did sink. Here's the rest of the damage:

CVE Sangamon SYS 46/FLOT 91-64/ENG 47-31/FIRE 2
CVE Santee SYS 35/FLOT 17-5/ENG 7/FIRE 1
CVE Altamaha SYS 22/FLOT 7-3/ENG 1/FIRE 0
CVE Barnes SYS 55/FLOT 20-6/ENG 2/FIRE 9
CVE Corregidor SYS 14/FLOT 73-57/ENG 12-4/FIRE 0
BB Prince of Wales SYS 11/FLOT 6-3/ENG 0/FIRE 0

Note that not all of the enemy carriers are here. This wasn't everything. It was, pretty much, for me. Big carriers are ordered north, hoping to finish off cripples. The big carriers will do so for just one day, then return to Darwin.

A very nice job.

It shows what happens when you leave your toys out for too long.

Still, two CVEs or even four for what he lost already and will lose is very good. Just check out the ground losses to see if any of his CVs sank.

So a few CVs probably sank since most of the survivors would have been in the air or already relocated to a land base.

Adding up the hits, I estimate that the only CV/CVL that could have survived is Unryu. Several of the cruiser escorts were also smacked around and could be hiding in port. Go get 'em!

Well done! I'd say the CVE/CVL TF reacting ahead of the crowd was in your favor. They soaked up sorties which could have dented your CVs. The CVEs that survive will be back in action fairly quickly as opposed to CVs taking torps or deck-penetrating bombs, which take a long time to repair.

That's a good lesson in the need to provide good search around your CVs if you're going to keep them that far forward.

EDIT: Mining the ports? Talk about kicking a man when he's down...

Cheers,

I think that OPilot wants to see the end-game for the Japanese. But as always, when the game ceases to be fun for both players, it would be time to call it. But I don't see that happening.

OPilot's email said "That battle wasn't supposed to happen yet". I think he was still gathering carriers for an attack. He shouldn't have done it so visibly, staying in the same approximate position for five days. Odds are that he didn't anticipate that I had combined my carrier forces.

It's tough to play as the Japanese. Battles like this are inevitably going to happen, sooner or later. I have the utmost respect for the Japanese player that can play through the bad turns and continue on. It's all about getting the proper mindset as the Japanese. Doing the most damage with the assets you have while you have them, and as you lose them.

No turn yet today, but there should be one soon.

Near Samarinda, sub Cabrilla fired four torpedoes at seaplane carrier Chiyoda near Samarinda. One dud torpedo hit. Sub Pollack spotted the same task force and missed destroyer Kagero with two torpedoes.

At Kendari, battleships Pennsylvania, Arizona and West Virginia bombarded. Damage wasn't great. 303 casualties and light base damage.

Beaufighters and B-25s attacked enemy tanks at Soerakarta but couldn't hit anything in perfectly clear weather. This is at the inland Java base where the Australian paratroopers held out.

Lots of B-24s bombed Truk's airfield. They went in before the P-38s, unfortunately. 13 Liberators were shot down when they found 90 Zeros on CAP. Damage to the base was very light. I wanted to show renewed interest here but it was costly. After all of the Liberators attacked, 25 P-38s swept and did very well, downing about 15 of the Zeros for no loss of their own. Major "Pappy" Boyington shot down 3 Zeros, giving him 10 kills for the war. The P-38s then redeployed to Kusaie Island. They will rest a bit and then move to Darwin.

In the morning, 18 FM-1s swept Samarinda, finding no CAP. Enemy ships were spotted in three hexes, with the fastest ships being the farthest east of Balikpapan. In a series of naval strikes, many enemy ships were hit. It was nothing short of a massacre. There was absolutely no CAP above any of the enemy task forces.

Closest to Samarinda, and therefore with the most previously damaged ships (carriers):

Allied aircraft
F6F-3 Hellcat x 128
SBD-5 Dauntless x 64
TBF-1 Avenger x 14

No Japanese losses

Farther east:

Allied aircraft
F6F-3 Hellcat x 20
SB2C-1C Helldiver x 59
SBD-5 Dauntless x 100
TBF-1 Avenger x 98

No Japanese losses

Allied aircraft losses

In the afternoon, against the ships that had moved the farthest:

Allied aircraft

TBF-1 Avenger x 13

Allied aircraft losses
SB2C-1C Helldiver: 2 damaged

Japanese Ships
CA Takao, Bomb hits 7, on fire
DD Asashio
CA Chokai, Bomb hits 3, heavy fires
CA Myoko, Bomb hits 1

When the attacks started, I thought to myself "mission accomplished". But as the brutal attacks continued, for some reason, I didn't enjoy what I was seeing. It was just a massacre. It was a great turn for me, but it signaled the end of the middle part of the war, where both sides are somewhat equal and anything can happen. I think that we quickly moved out of that phase and into the beginning of the final phase of the war: complete Allied domination. That's not to say that the enemy can't inflict damage and win some naval battles. It's just that the tide turned quickly and that was a bit sad. I told OPilot my thoughts on this. It may have sounded disingenuous, winning a big battle and saying that I felt bad about it. But it did feel strange. OPilot has been a quality opponent and he's a quality person. I felt bad about the turn. I've played this game a long time, and reveled in winning the big battles, but this massacre just didn't feel right. Weird but there it is.

Elsewhere, Allied forces attacked at Kendari for the first time. It was a tough attack, against level 5 forts. Kendari will fall but it will be at a cost. Continued battleship bombardments will help.

Ground combat at Kendari (70,106)

Allied Deliberate attack

Attacking force 29208 troops, 475 guns, 564 vehicles, Assault Value = 973

Defending force 23721 troops, 199 guns, 104 vehicles, Assault Value = 382

Japanese adjusted defense: 969

Allied assault odds: 1 to 2 (fort level 5)

At Soerakarta on Java, the Americal Division attacked enemy armor units. The tanks are now showing movement out of the hex. Americal will attack again.

Besides the two enemy carriers engaged at the beginning of the day, no other enemy carriers were spotted. Could it be that they all were sunk?

Total air losses for the day, including "ground" losses in parentheses:

37 A6M5 Zeros (9)
34 Petes (34)
11 Jakes (9)
9 A6M5b Zeros (9)
5 Judys (5)
7 Jills (7)

13 B-24s
4 SBDs
3 TBFs
2 SB2Cs
2 F6Fs
2 FM-1s

None of the badly damaged US CVEs sank. The worst, Sangamon, is disbanded in the size one port of Madjene, the most forward base on the western side of the Celebes. The only damage change for it was the FIRE going from 2 to 1. It is now SYS 46/FLOT 91-64/ENG 47-31/FIRE 1. It won't be leaving Madjene anytime soon.

A Halsey, you are not. He would have figured out a way to keep attacking.

A suggestion, some Naval Squad to help repair the CVEs until they can make it to a better and more defended port. If you haven't done so, off load the air units. Don't forget to protect against night air attacks.

BTW, an excellent job on a risky move. If he would have sent his carriers to the rear, moved his other carriers in with them, and flooded the area with LBA, your fleet would be hurting now.

I called off the chase because of the sighting of enemy carrier(s) coming southwest from Japan a few days ago. They could be entering this area now.

In the game, of course I'm very happy with the results. But on a personal level, it's hard to inflict devastating losses in a gentlemanly game, despite both sides knowing that this kind of thing was going to happen sooner or later.

I completely understand what you mean. You are more like Admiral Kurita, as in why spill more blood than you have to?

Very surprised to see Amagi and Akagi still afloat after all the hits they took in the prior battle. I suppose some of the bomb hits could have glanced off the side armour and did little internal damage.(the game doesn't model a "mine effect" from bombs going off very close to the ship, AFAIK).

The game will be on hold for a bit. I will be away from home for the rest of this week. OPilot has said that he will be taking the extra time to "regroup and make new plans to delay your advances". He has said all along that he is in the game for the long haul. We intend to take this game to the end. Whenever that may be.

Back from a longer than expected absence. Turns will be slower for awhile. Today's turn had the Allied carriers moving south past Makassar, and the enemy moving northeast past Tarakan. Ships fled Tarakan and Davao. Our attack on Soerabaja may begin with the next turn.

Dutch sub KXV fired two torpedoes at AKE Tarushima Maru near Davao. Both missed. Shipping seen leaving Davao.

Thresher hit AMc Kamoi Maru #7 with a torpedo at Tarakan, destroying the small ship.

Twenty P-38Hs swept Batavia, finding 41 Tojos and 30 Oscars. 7 Tojos and 7 Oscars were downed, for the loss of 4 P-38s.

I-2 was hit by two depth charges from DE Encounter south of Mataram. The sub-chasing ships are down there because subs were spotted in the area. It's not a shipping route.

Kendari and Soerabaja were bombed. An Allied artillery attack at Soerabaja went well. A deliberate attack will follow today. We'll wait a bit at Kendari. Not all units resupplied from Kolaka. Slow battleships will bombard Kendari again.

Lots of ships, including the carriers, will pass near Mataram on the way back to Darwin. The damaged ships will be sorted out there and sent to appropriate ports. ARD Dewey has finally repaired its own damage, damage incurred while being towed to Gove. Dewey will move to Bathurst Island, near Darwin. It can lift 20,000 tons. There's a big drydock at Sydney now with a lift capacity of 55,000 tons.

Soerabaja will be taken and eastern Timor will be cleared. Units will then advance towards Batavia. The slowest xAPs headed to Aden require eleven more days to get there. Then they move to Ceylon for the Sumatra invasion. Carriers will support that.

If you can afford to, send Naval Support in lots of 12 squads to help the AR. Somewhere, I believe Alfred did a nice write up about repairs. If I remember correctly, that is the number of Naval Support squads needed.

Battleships Mississippi and Idaho bombarded Kendari but did little damage. Three other slow battleships will bombard today, to combine with a ground attack.

The first attempt to take Soerabaja is successful!

Ground combat at Soerabaja (56,104)

Allied Deliberate attack

Attacking force 25969 troops, 370 guns, 444 vehicles, Assault Value = 984

Defending force 9312 troops, 116 guns, 27 vehicles, Assault Value = 191

Allied engineers reduce fortifications to 2

Allied adjusted assault: 373

Slight damage to the oil and refinery, no damage to the repair yard. Minesweepers will move in and start to clear the port. Troops will continue to clear out the isolated enemy. Base support is railing in from nearby bases. Fighters have arrived for protection. I was a bit surprised to see just level 2 forts there. Soerabaja isn't very defensible, in clear terrain, but given how long the enemy has had Java, I expected more. This is the first direct blow to sizable enemy oil production.

[EDIT: I noticed that the forts at Soerabaja were reduced to 2, so had been at 3.]

Pennsylvania, Arizona and West Virginia bombarded Kendari to good effect. It's satisfying to use the old battlewagons and have them contribute.

YMS-99 started clearing mines at newly captured Soerabaja. It could take awhile. 36 mines cleared today.

Sub Seahorse spotted destroyers north of Babeldaob. 10/10 DL there. The carrier(s) spotted awhile ago coming south from Japan may be in this area.

An Allied attack at Kendari has poor odds against high forts. But the battleships helped and the casualty ratio is more than acceptable. Allied troops now need to rest and draw supply from Kolaka. This could take a few days, using the trail.

Ground combat at Kendari (70,106)

Allied Deliberate attack

Attacking force 28714 troops, 476 guns, 557 vehicles, Assault Value = 897

Defending force 22622 troops, 197 guns, 106 vehicles, Assault Value = 301

Allied carriers are approaching Darwin. Most of the damaged ships are there, or will be there soon. Ship triage will then occur, with ships to be sent to various bases for repair. The badly damaged CVE at Madjene is still burning with a FIRE level of 1. The ENG damaged ticked up 1. With Madjene being a size 1(0) port, and adjacent Pare Pare being a size 1(1) port, I'll risk moving the CVE one hex to Pare Pare. It's possible that the naval support being flown in won't help at Madjene, but it will at Pare Pare. I don't think that the AR helps until the fire is put out.

Enemy mines continue to be swept at Soerabaja. S-37 spotted a mix of support ships south of Mindanao. The ships were spotted later at Manado. Looks like they fled north with the earlier carrier battles and are now returning.

Submarine Hoe sank SC Ch 20 with a torpedo near Legaspi. Snook hit AMC Bankok Maru with a torpedo near Cotabato.

The US 40th Infantry Division took lightly defended Madioen on Java. Defenders include some engineers, base support and the Southwest Area Fleet. The defenders are now isolated behind the lines and will be eliminated.

More cleanup at Soerabaja. Another 1589 enemy casualties. Another attack at Kendari will wait another day. The units did get supply from Kolaka, but they'll wait for 5 slow battleships to bombard today.

Great news with badly damaged CVE Sangamon. It moved to Pare Pare and showed 2 messages of additional flooding. But it made it there and showed great improvement by the end of the day. It is now SYS 47/FLOT 74-64/ENG 48-31/FIRE 0. The fire is out and the AR has apparently helped greatly at the size 1 port. FLOT damaged decreased by 17 just today. Once it stabilizes, I could move it to the bigger nearby port of Makassar, but Makassar gets daily enemy recon and Pare Pare gets none. I may just be patient and go for the safer play.

YMS-99 swept mines at Soerabaja, hit one of the last mines, and sunk.

I've talked about how much I like the Beaufighters for strafing attacks. They work well on low naval attacks, strafing and bombing, if the pilots are trained. They do good work when there is no enemy CAP. Today I swept Manado with Hellcats and expected the Beaufighters at Kolaka to go after shipping there. Well, the shipping moved to Ternate. There were fighters at Ternate, and the Beaufighters went in unescorted. 10 of the Beaufighters were shot down, and no ships were hit. About a dozen Zeros were on CAP. Some well-trained pilots were lost.

Another cleanup attack at Soerabaja. Another 2118 enemy casualties, with some units wiped out by attrition.

Wotje was bombarded by 8 Fletcher class destroyers. Wotje was then invaded. The defenders are in pitiful shape. An LST grounded and sank. Paratroopers landed on Wotje to help overwhelm the defenders.

Ground combat at Wotje (135,115)

Allied Shock attack

Attacking force 4825 troops, 43 guns, 13 vehicles, Assault Value = 197

Defending force 981 troops, 0 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 2

Allied adjusted assault: 133

Japanese adjusted defense: 1

Allied assault odds: 133 to 1 (fort level 4)

Allied forces CAPTURE Wotje !!!

Combat modifiers
Defender:
Attacker: shock(+)

Japanese ground losses:
1069 casualties reported
Squads: 42 destroyed, 0 disabled
Non Combat: 102 destroyed, 0 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled
Units destroyed 2

Assaulting units:
22nd Marine Regiment
1st Spec Svc Force /1

Defending units:
62nd Naval Guard Unit
Wotje Base Force

The 1st Special Service Force only has a couple more weeks until withdrawing. I'll get them back to Ailinglap, and then drop fragments of them on unoccupied enemy dot bases northeast of Kwajalein. No need to gather up the fragments as they'll disappear with the withdrawal.

Allied carriers are now at Darwin. Yorktown has had 4 FLOT damage for months. It is ordered to nearby Bathurst Island, where ARD Dewey just arrived. Dewey will work on the FLOT damage. More damaged ships got to Darwin today. A few need to bring down some minor damage. Then ships will be ordered out to various bases for repairs.

I love the image of WW2 paratroopers dropping in daylight on to a defended coral atoll! Works well enough in game... but irl it would be like half dead because they dropped into the lagoon, and the other half dead in the air before their feet even touch the ground!

The Japanese used paratroops in daylight to take Fort Drum in Manila harbour, and maybe on Corregidor Island too. Fighters and bombers flying close air support can keep the enemy heads down.

US 40th Infantry Division continued to wear down the small enemy units in the jungle at Madioen. Some enemy nuisance bombing in China, as usual. Another big Allied attack at Kendari. The 5 slow battleships didn't bombard. Just following orders. Weren't switched to a bombardment mission.

Ground combat at Kendari (70,106)

Allied Deliberate attack

Attacking force 29214 troops, 481 guns, 681 vehicles, Assault Value = 913

Defending force 21953 troops, 199 guns, 106 vehicles, Assault Value = 251

Allied engineers reduce fortifications to 4

Allied adjusted assault: 889

Japanese adjusted defense: 1331

Allied assault odds: 1 to 2 (fort level 4)

Combat modifiers
Defender: terrain(+), forts(+), leaders(+), experience(-)
Attacker:

Japanese ground losses:
1368 casualties reported
Squads: 41 destroyed, 77 disabled
Non Combat: 2 destroyed, 45 disabled
Engineers: 5 destroyed, 7 disabled
Guns lost 33 (1 destroyed, 32 disabled)

Allied ground losses:
776 casualties reported
Squads: 3 destroyed, 46 disabled
Non Combat: 1 destroyed, 18 disabled
Engineers: 5 destroyed, 45 disabled
Guns lost 16 (4 destroyed, 12 disabled)
Vehicles lost 52 (4 destroyed, 48 disabled)

The battle will be won, but it will take time and casualties. And more actual bombardments.

Soerabaja was cleared of the enemy. Another 1272 enemy casualties.

Damaged ships are heading out of Darwin, headed to the east coast of Australia for repairs or redirection to ports of repair.
