Actually, it was the off-broadway version of "Stomp!". I would have liked to have seen it.

To me, that is the wee wee hours of the morning. Is that what gets you up? If so, that is better than not getting up for that . . .

Didja know ...
Today is the anniversary of the end of the Guadalcanal Campaign? Think back to early August last year and imagine you spent all the time from then til now on an island where it rained so often that nothing dried out, decay and stink was everywhere and there were other men trying to kill you with bullets, bombs and shells - or sharp swords if they could get close enough. If the enemy didn't kill you, the bugs, the jungle or the food might!

Offshore, the navy sent the few ships available against a formidable enemy with better training in night fighting and good weapons for close-in battles. Losses were grievous, but the navy did its duty and prevailed.

Above Guadalcanal the Cactus Air Force, occasional navy aircraft and B-17s fended off the enemy and inflicted losses while suffering their own.

All hail the men who clung to the mud, flotsam and parachute lines and endured for so long!

I went to a government office today to get some paperwork done and there was no waiting . . .

I called one yesterday to try and set up an appointment. It was from an '800' number, and they told me there was a 40 minute wait. Tried to call the office directly and I was told (by recording) there was no local number to the office (really?).

The office is only 15 minutes from my house, and even closer when I babysit (tomorrow) my grandson. I take him with me.

With any luck, he'll be in a foul mood (rarely), just to piss them off for making me drive to the place.

P.S.

Fill him up with chocolate and a Mountain Dew. Lots of caffeine to rev the engine and sugar to fuel it.

Good suggestions, didn't think of it. Little bugger was angel. He does behave well for grandpa.

At any rate it took less than 15 minutes.

I have carefully reviewed the join dates of all forumites on this page, and you are all younger than me. Even Apollo11. Though he is close.

What shall I do on 8-1-2020?

It is many months away, but perhaps relevant to mention that the original reason I joined the matrix forum was an invite (?sort of?) to everyone on the old PacWar mailing list back 20 years ago- when AE was not even a glint in the programmer's eye. Yet here we are.

Is there anyone else who arrived here the same way still active?

Before my time I'm afraid. I got pulled in for good by Uncommon Valor. Played that for a year or two before joining the forum in anticipation of War in The Pacific, the original.

That is interesting because James Byrne's Hart-Lynne server also had a SPI War in Europe list in the 1990s. I played a lot of CWIE email against a German opponent, Hanno Meier.

It was Hanno who suggested I needed to get into Uncommon Valour, but what with wives/children/mortgages back then it just never happened.

Then eventually I procured WITP and just launched into the grand campaign... as you do.

I came for a download of PacWar, then I saw where an Italian lawyer invaded Japan in 1944. I later bought the game and joined the forum.

If you couldn't invade Japan in 1944 playing PacWar (and not just against the AI*), you weren't trying hard enough. Come to think of it, if in any version of WITP or AE except ironman you aren't doing that against the AI, you need to get serious.

[*to be blunt, in PacWar you could assemble all six divisions of the USMC, along with TF 58.1, 58.2, etc, Amph TF's to lift them, etc etc etc, into a massive death star that could all be supplied from one (1) port. The automated supply system took only a week to catch up. Once you had the BBB of F6F's, you could go from PH to Tokyo Bay in about 10-12 weeks, if you were patient.

I was not referring to PacWar, I was referring to Greyjoy against Andav. (I believe it was against Andav.)

Against the Japanese AI, I get a victory as soon as it is possible. But then, I have never played any Ironman scenarios. Nope, not against the Man of Steel. (Stalin!)

Rumors of an updated and free version of PACWAR brought me to the Matrix site. I discovered UV while looking around and immediately bought it. There was also lots of discussion about the forthcoming WitP, which started me drooling. I haven't stopped drooling since.
