And down by Naha, the SAG commander decides to pull up short and not go in...but two squadrons of high flying Betties, do go in...the first chewed up with a miscommunication and no fighter escorts, but the second does well:

If only the KB could have gotten into position during the night!

It will take 5-7 torpedoes to put the Prince of Wales down in this mod...sadly.

But the KB is at Tsingato, wit 3-5 PT boat squadrons around her, and the Indiana and 10 or so other warships near bye!

Oh My! At least the bulk of the Allied fleet is around Naha and west.

However during the night, the KB sorties and flees to meet up with some surface ships around Moppo, while a SAG goes looking for the Indiana, and the SAG group near Naha retreats to Nagasaki.

In the early hours of the night, the KB is spotted surrounded by enemy fleets, but no engagements...when this shocker occurs, the Allied fleet is pushing north and east. Uh, oh!

Night Time Surface Combat, near Amami Oshima at 95,61, Range 2,000 Yards

Wonder, of wonders, the KB makes Moppo dodging a few submarine attacks, while the Indiana is nowhere to be found...and at dawn, the KB turns into the wind and launches a strike from their depleted decks. Offense is still prioritized -- a scant 10% of fighters are on CAP (but all the Rufe).

First strike to the IJN this morning! Poor Hornet! Weather and distance play havoc with coordination.

The IJN command had guessed correctly...the Allied CV's were primarily set up defensively, and the KB weathers the storm of attacks without any hits!

And in the afternoon, the KB launches again and finds the Allied baby carriers...while the KB fights off the Allied counter strike easily.

Air losses are relatively light...of course, the Allies don't really need to do anymore with their Navy to win the game in a month or two or three.

The Rufe should be great on dot bases to eliminate PBYs and other slow search planes. Too bad none of the float plane groups on the cruisers can convert to them because they can also do naval search.

Isn't the Auto Victory equation: 1945 - 2x; 1944 - 3x; 1943 - 4x?

You mentioned that Erik nearly has 3x, so you think it'll take him a few months to move from that to 4x? If you make it to 1/1/44, that would be something.

CR: Japan won't be able to stand up to a concentrated strategic bombing campaign...I suspect the game would be over in about 2-4 weeks if that happens.

Also, Korea is doomed I think. Maybe I will be able to keep a toehold. Maybe not, my guess is not.

Plus then there are the supplies...they will run out. Sooner rather than later.

You have to hold the Fusan perimeter then invade up the coast to cut off his armies . . .

March 11, 1943

Allied fleets move to Shanghai...

Allies only move over the artillery across the water, avoiding a shock attack, and will cross with 20 combined American Soviet units on the morrow backed up by setup artillery to support the crossing with no disruption.

If I had the PP to free up units from Honshu, I would be digging in along the Heijo line...but I simply don't have it, or more troops to start the line with. Port Arthur is doomed, and I probably should pull everything back to Heijo line although not retreating might lengthen the war.

I'd pull out of PA … concentrating your troops will allow them to survive longer. Once PA is cut off, runs out of oil, then it is out of supply and those troops die fast. As long as you are able to push some supply to Fusan, the Korean troops can fight … a bit.

Amazing that you have lasted this long … I never would have been able to put up as good a defense …

Final day was May 13, 1943...and Obvert took Tottori with an air assault...fittingly. He used his paratroopers aggressively and well thru out.

I am sorry for the lack of updates, as rl health problems bedeviled my family and many thanks to Obvert for putting up with my slower turnaround.

This game Japan did absolutely nothing correctly, and Obvert used an aggressive defense and then a relentless assault to absolutely steam roll Japan. Having the Soviets activate so early on an unprepared Japan didn't help any.

Hats off to a wonderful opponent!

Kudos to you for sticking it out to the bitter end. Next time, be careful where you ship the sushi!

What amazed me most about this game was how strong the Soviet army was. At a time when the overwhelming majority of their forces are tied up in a life or death struggle against the Germans, the small fragment they had in the Far East was more than enough to cause a nightmare for you.

It was also surprising -- and no doubt terrifying from your side -- just how quickly the Western Allies shifted from defense to offense.

Thanks, Jeff, for giving us a glimpse of an entertaining and atypical way for things to play out. Back when Russia activated, I felt sure that you and Obvert would agree to back up a day to avoid the (unintentional) activation. That you guys played it out gave the rest of us a lot of new info.

What are your plans for AE now, if any?

I doubt very much doubt that IJ did much wrong. To have survived this long after the border incident activated the SOV is simply amazing. Your AAR award was well deserved.

That was a cracking AAR and there are not many of us who would have tried to play with an accidental Soviet activation

Thanks for yet another great AAR, Lowpe! Was a highly enjoyable game, even with my JFB heart breaking in the process

Hopefully whatever RL problems you have will be solved for good. Not in the least, for you to be able to keep deliver quality stuff here

Today is the first day in many years with no turn to do! I think I am going to take some time off and catch up on the forum AARs and relax!

Haven't played as the Allies yet, but I am not sure I would get the same feel for the game as I did with Japan.
