You greet Barbarians every morning (well not every morning). They would like to show their gratitude by ransacking the city of your choice.

Now wait a minute. The Vikings were peaceful traders, so peaceful that the King of France gave a bunch of them land. Then those peaceful people crossed a water filled ditch and received lands and titles there. Then some went north to Scotland and some went West to Ireland.

Other Vikings settled in Eastern Europe, mixed with the Natives and developed Kiev, Moscow, and other locales.

You left out Sicily

I left out a lot of places where they settled.

Well, I would like to point out a three things.

1) It is not a Viking in the picture. No idea what the picture is that is labelled Viking. It sure is no Viking.
2) Vikings were not barbarians. They considered themselves very civilized.
3) Civilized people ransacked more cities than the so called barbarians. And that is true even if Vikings are excluded as 'civilized'.

Please direct your feedback to Mr. Gary Larson, https://www.thefarside.com/about

I agree that many people from Scandinavia have been mis-labeled as Viking, and Viking has been mis-used as a synonym for Barbarian.

That arrow pointing to "Vinland" aims a bit high for Newfoundland which is well south of Greenland (Gröenland).

And Viking helmets did not have cattle horns because they had no cattle. Any cattle they managed to slaughter gave up their horns for funky ale drinking cups!

New York is south of Madrid - but you would never think of it as having an African climate!

It does depend on the projection, if from the pole then something well to the south can appear a lot higher the more to the left of the map you go?

You also left out central North America where there were blonde, blue eyed natives who sunburned easily.

That is a Minnesota Viking, without the fake axe nor a whiskey bottle nor a bier mug . . .

Just think if Rome would have given them lands to settle and incorporated them into their empire. Treated them fairly instead of selling them dog meat in exchange for their children . . .

The graphic raises existential questions:
1. Why did the Angles make a direct crossing to England instead of their usual right-angle hook?
2. Why did the makers of carpet backing (Jutes) decide to go raiding?
3. Did the Saxons communicate by Saxon-phones?
4. Shouldn't the Franks have been called Françoises?
5. Did the Vandals spray paint their gang graffiti on the walls of Carthage?
6. Did the Goths lack bright colours like the Visigoths or backbones like the Ostrogoths?
7. How did a term of endearment between spouses become the gang name for barbarian raiders?

The world wonders.

The graphic raises existential questions:
1. Why did the Angles make a direct crossing to England instead of their usual right-angle hook? It's called a great circle route - ask the airlines
2. Why did the makers of carpet backing (Jutes) decide to go raiding? Because the British used Persian rugs
3. Did the Saxons communicate by Saxon-phones? No, but they did do Sex-On-Phones
4. Shouldn't the Franks have been called Françoises? They had trouble spelling it, besides they liked hot dogs
5. Did the Vandals spray paint their gang graffiti on the walls of Carthage? No, the Roman graffiti took up all the space on the walls
6. Did the Goths lack bright colours like the Visigoths or backbones like the Ostrogoths? It was a legal thing - teenagers had already copyrighted 'Goth' so they had to rebrand
7. How did a term of endearment between spouses become the gang name for barbarian raiders? You've obviously never been married

The world wonders.

They probably didn't make a direct crossing. They followed the coast to a place where they wanted to stay, or were allowed to stay. They probably made landfall on several places along their route.

The Angles were coming from the North, then they made a right (correct?) turn.

The Jutes did not have enough hemp. So they went to Britain to grow more . . .

The Vandals vandalized Rome, that is where the word vandalism comes from. The actually came from Andalusia (Vandalusia?)

The Saxons communicated with their battle axe. The Saxon women settled for the second best fighter or worse for their husband.

The Franks became the Francois, they took Latin to do it however.

The Goths were probably like the Amish and not the colorfully clothed Mennonites. They came from different areas of Europe.

The best dear hunting is in the bars, not the woods. Yes dear, no dear, OH DEAR!

Dude. Try to keep up. If he told me he had COVID-19, I would be asking him for a game. The same goes for any thread brother out there. If you've got a touch of Ebola, a whiff of Coronavirus, a touch of Dengue, a smidgen of Shigella or a bit of bronchopneumonia then I'm your man for a PBEM.
