So, I've read through the manual, and i'm trying to figure out some of the finer points on SUs, particularly with regards to how they're handled as corps-level reinforcements.

Is there any sort of priority for which SUs will attempt to be commited first?

Do any SUs get a bonus or malus to their commit chances? e.g. self-propelled formations might be deserving of a bonus modifier but that sort of nuance might not be implemented (or even realistic, for all i know)

Do mortar, rocket, and SP artillery count as regular artillery with regards to the defender/allied forces extra artillery cap?

Thanks!

Basically no, they all go into the mix, but I find the selection algorithm is sensible

SP formations you can (therefore should) direct attach to combat units, that'll get them into action

yes, for that all the same. No harm in exceeding the allocation cap as your main corps may well be in action more than once in a turn - if so, the routine will pick fresher/stronger SUs

Oof, has it really been 2 weeks since i wrote this? Anywho, thanks for the reply! Some followup questions:

-i've tended to leave one or two high value support units (eg tanks and sp art) in each of my corps-- it sounds like i'd be better off distributing them directly to divisions if i have the space? How do folks typically set up corps HQs?

-on a scale of one to gamey, how gamey is it considered to assign US support units to commonwealth forces (and vice-versa)? I've assumed it was more historically accurate to keep them separate, but it's become increasingly tempting to do something with all those US combat engineers that start piling up.

a) is a bit of a trade off, if it goes to a division and that division doesn't fight that turned the SU remains unused. So often little pt loading up second rate formations. having said that, with the allies come 1944 you can give every division 3 SU so you might as well do so

b) ummh, its a bit like putting Free French units in a British command or the S Africans into France. As I understand it, US support units operated in non-US corps but most of the other national groups liked to keep together. If you are playing the AI, then a bit of roleplay does no harm, if its PBEM, then I'd do what gives you the best spread but still observe a few (self-imposed) constraints.

My recommendation is to only assign artillery support units to corps HQs. Put your army HQ on a nice big supply depot city on an active rail line and assign most of your support units to it. Then directly assign support units to on-map units when you need them for attack or defense. Otherwise send them back to the army HQ so they can rebuild/refit.
