N.B.: The first post here is from my game w/ Cheltham which was put on hold some months ago just after the first arrival of the Night Witches. There are a few other older posts scattered about.

(from game w/ Chelt is Soviets)

The AAR for that 1.8 we got to about turn 40 will display by clicking the link
below which will show a 28 page pdf in a new tab. That one has kind of petered out, Chelt has asked for sabbatical from that one.

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1Yzw2kuhclqtQd3xgkdOQeXmuHHkSvGw_/view?usp=sharing

So Dave and I started one using ver. 1_9 .... and then we restarted again .... and now I put some screenshots of my efforts as Soviets v. Mr. David

here is a screenshot of another game I started with Dave using ver. 1_9 and we have advanced to turn 35 now for Germans. Soviet air was atrocious the first 30 or so turns, I spent HOURS moving new spawns only to have them sit on the ground. They never flew a mission. Not CS, not AS, nothing. So that was a waste of time. They should just make all the Soviet air not movable until they will fly. I'd rather see them shot down from the sky trying and getting eliminated, than just sitting there. Also, with the Finn stop line there at Leningrad, no use just sitting there, I moved them all to Riga just in time to keep the Goimans from taking Riga until like turn 10 or 12 or so, by then I built up quite a throng in Estonia. Moving everything I can up from Gorki / Chelyabinsk now for the big show. Highlighted "possession ->>>flags" on the attached so you could see better the Soviet rails a going to Moscow.

The rest of the map of the above, of course there are a LOT more Germans
b/w Kiev and Odessa, but fog of war is on so I can't see all his guys back there.
I get a very limited brief glimpse of them when the playback movie ends,
for a few seconds I can see the mighty Wehrmacht back there, but then .... fog again :)

Pretty fun game, but Soviets having some problems with air still not working.

re: our problems with air in the 1.9 version we started, we've been noticing how weird it seems, I mentioned that his two motorcycles in hex 282,282 had such great air cover that I lost 50 tanks and none of my air would support or fly intercept or whatever, and he says, "All my air is on rest" but for me all are on mission but none will fly. Guess we'll see in 42 I hope. But the choo-choo goes, so there is that! And the artillery!

In the 1.9 game that Dave and I are playing, we have noted the lack of any Partisans during the game (we did not choose "no partisans" and David still has his red and grey Einsatz people etc. But no partisans are appearing for Soviets. But in the inventory they are available. And here is the MADNESS that is Chelyabinsk, where (due to storms) all the little subdivided dudes for the darker brown background uniforms keep appearing. I finally was able to recombine that mess (took me about 45 minutes). I like the recombining game. Here, and at Gorki (the big one) those reinforcements can really stack up!

Und hier, we resume the AAR for that 1.8 version that reached the Battle of Moscow almost.

Here is Moscow from way back then at turn 6 or so in that one, from last year:

Well, Dave has conceded in the second go we did, not b/c of any brilliancies on my part (except for holding Riga for 10 - 12 turns, and spoiling all attempts to take most of the "key" cities for shock bonus) but to revisit German rail etc. So, we begin again, and I noticed on turn 1 for Soviets that ... well i not type it again i type it once and show (PS Sovs start w/ 5000 rail points, but that is still a lot and is soon 10,000 .... enough to rail Leningrad to Riga. With Ship for other infantry to Riga, Sovs can build a SIZEABLE defense to hold Riga. But that is unhistorical, the Sovs did not wake up on day 1 and suddenly able to float / rail a front to Riga, or a front to anywhere) So I agree w/ house rule that Sovs cannot move on turn 1, or at least cannot do rail or sea transport on turn 1)

started making a "player aid" charts so that I don't have to keep looking back at the briefing for info, here is the one I make for the Axis so far, I will grow it to it is a color chart, instead of having to always look back and read briefing I like charts better. I think I have the info right, if not let me know

Here is a screenie of a DNO game I started w/ K (ver. 4) to give idea of scale compared to FitE2 ... Germans really busted through on their turn 1, I have not played DNO before so looking forward to seeing how the Sovs do in this one.

I was looking at my last .sal file from my & Dave's go in ver. 1_9,

and noticed (this is west of Kiev) that the RGVK figureines in 3D mode,
they have green colored bases (which threw me at first, I was like, where
did I get those US troops?) then I started noticing that the Soviets in
3D mode have different colored bases for it seems different armies or formations ...

Is there a way to change that base color, to like all of them to be red?
In the picture the ones with a gold base, those are Soviet also
(different army that is uniform light blue on tan)
Also, just noticed, the ones with a GRAY base are Sov 25th Mech Corps,
that was confusing I thought they were Goimans! Pretty crazy!

I just like to look at some of the map like this, just because.
Certainly would be a challenge to play in this mode!

w/re/to msg fr cpt flam (below): a later game event (Germans secure Bessarabia) released the Rumanian Reserves. That was in the game w/ Chelt, but speaking of Romanians and Hungarians and Italians O MY, here in this latest go w/ David, I decided to put some spice into AGS and try to do something ... here is 26th Army, who headed for the hills / Carpathians, and then saw ... The Kosice Basin of the Carpathians. Lots of nice railroads down thar that should be busted up. I think it would be good to label this part of the map with the game (I just photo shopped the label of Kosice Basin in there). Pretty fun game! D has captured his three cities for continuing shock.

I must inform you.
If you choose Reserve division to stay in Rumania, you will be unable to keep the Garrison requirement.
When option will occur to reform army, these units will disappear.
I prefer to tell you before getting to far away.

You have already the 3rd Infantry division which must be in garrison (at this time)
for the others, you will have to choose
for me, I left the 2 guarding against Bulgaria
I sent one to Constanta, another in Bucharest
this leaved 2 others along frontier.

Edit: Ditto.
_____________

the link below is an interesting site that I stumbled across that has some cool pictures of Soviets in action,
and some artist renderings (as well as pics) of what their "flashes" were in the field.

a site for Luftwaffe information (very extensive) is

Came across a pretty interesting site that has tons of information about Axis operations in Russia all throughout WWII, much of the site is in Russian, but most of the actual reports and some of the microfilms are in English. Pretty fascinating stuff to be found there. And, you can many times navigate into root directories that are mostly in English. Anyway, here is the Waffen SS link from there:

https://www.maparchive.ru/index.php/waffen-ss.html

That is where I got the old typewriter style type face shown in Keppler's order below

Smolensk is nearly surrounded. Tallin will fall in the next few moves.

I don't think Axis can take Kherson in the time allowed.

Meanwhile, Op. Arctic Fox finally starts.

this may be for future use.
In the scenario notes:
Axis paratroopers must drop within 5 hexes of supplied units.
Russian partisan must be dropped at more than 5 hexes from same.

Another turn finally done, Tallinn captured by Germans,
Smolensk getting hemmed in,
AGS is way behind, railed up SS Viking to seek out a bridgehead to get around Kiev.
Kherson is too far away, plus the Rumanians forgot their bridge and left half their army on the wrong side of the river LoL

Axis 14 completed, over to Chelt

AGC pressing to Moscow, Smolensk is surrounded.
AGN pressing Leningrad, almost to Luga. Tallinn taken, no Beowulf.
AGS: biding time, awaiting SS Viking to get bridgehead around south of Kiev,
otherwise awaiting Rumanians to Kherson, surrounding Odessa.

At current "run rate" in computerese ... we're looking at four years to complete, but hoping to shave that when the 1942 and closer battles get going. At the very first, this scene takes a long time to make turns, but as game time elapses, the turns get easier to make. Secret is to get over this first hump of Barbarossa and into D31 etc.

Edit: found a few more tricks that helps speed game along. Now we are making much better progress! Will show more tips in later posts.
