Hi there,

unfortunately I have to come back regarding a missing PBEM++ game. After some time away my opponent and me got back to our PBEM++ game. Unfortunately neither him nor me can find the game in the PBEM++ lobby. Our challenge/running game is not showing.

I had a look into the C:\Users\<User>\AppData\Local\My Games\Strategic Command WWI\PBEM++ folder and found that under my PBEM++ name the folder is empty. However there is a DAT folder with the v1.01.01 that contains a .dat savegame file. The path to this folder is C:\Users\<User>\AppData\Local\My Games\Strategic Command WWI\PBEM++\DAT\v1.01.01

--> Is this due to the game version update? Any chance we can restore our PBEM++? Thank you very much in advance!

This is a bit of an odd one because the game doesn't at any point remove any *.dat files found within your matrix user name folder within the hidden PBEM++ folder. If the files are not there then the only thing I can think of is that you perhaps switched computers during the game and they would be in your other computer?

Otherwise I'd be scratching my head as to why they would be missing?

For this path:

C:\Users\<User>\AppData\Local\My Games\Strategic Command WWI\PBEM++\DAT\v1.01.01

These would have backup *.dat files located within them for use by the game under circumstances for when a backup would be needed, e.g. switching computers, patching up to the latest version and wanting to continue an older game started under a previous version and so on.

Aside from that, the only reason a game might be missing from the PBEM++ server after all of the above, would be if you had not come back to it for over a month or so as I believe the server cleans up older and abandoned files as needed.

Was the game you were playing perhaps started under and during Beta testing? That could be another reason why you are not seeing the game as the BETA version of the game uses a different PBEM++ server.

Hi Hubert,

thanks for your quick response and please excuse my delayed answer. Indeed I was using another PC over Christmas when playing the game. I found the .dat savegame in the PBEM++/user folder. But unfortunately it still does not show up online in the lobby. My opponent also has that savegame.

--> Is there any chance we can restore our PBEM++ game from the local .dat files we have? E.g. using the .dat files for hosting a new challeng? It was a YouTube project... :/

Can you tell me what version of the game you were playing? And if you perhaps updated to a new version now where you first saw the issue?

Just wondering if perhaps you were playing an earlier Beta version of the game? If so, then it might make sense why you are not seeing the game in the lobby as the earlier BETA uses a different server and the only way to get back to that server is to reinstall the Beta version (if possible) and play with that.

Hey, we started the game on v1.01.01 and once updated to v1.01.02 before Christmas. I now updated to v1.01.04. So we most likely got affected by the server purging due to inactivity. Hence the hope that the system not only relys on the server files but can also be restored by the local .dat files. If you need it I can sent it to you via PM.

Thx again!

Unfortunately no, if it was purged by the server then there is no way for me to get you started again. Sorry for the bad news on this one.

Thanks Hubert - although very sad to hear. I`d like to address that feedback to the PBEM++ team - do you know how I could reach them/where to post? I see a big flaw here in the PBEM++ system as the file just disappears without any possibility for recovery. Two solutions I have in mind could be a) allow the option to mark one game per player as "do not auto-delete" in the PBEM++ system or b)introduce the option to host a new challenge based on that .dat savegame.

Your best bet would be to probably contact Matrix Support directly as this kind of info and suggestion/feedback would be then funneled to the appropriate department.
