Hi,

What aspect exactly?

There was a big naval carrier battle with some sub action. Or do you mean (per your title) the ground combat in the marianas? ( the battles of Saipan, Tinian and Guam)

With regard to the naval action, there is always Samuel Morison's, History of the US Navy volume 8 (Covers New Guinea and the Marianas, March 1944-August 1944) , but a more recent book which I liked a bit more, just due to it being more recent really, is :

Red Sun Setting , the battle of the philippine sea, by William Y. Blood. A thorough book.

I am sure there is better literature that I am not aware of, but this one is quite good.

Being more army and marine corps oriented, I read a lot more books about all the island battles on the ground . One that springs out, and also covers a little bit of air and naval warfare is

Saipan: The Battle That Doomed Japan in World War II by James H. Hallas here a bit more info and reviews

Fast Carriers, a general history about carrier task force development in the USN, but with some interesting things to say about both the Marianas and the Philippine Sea.

Ian Toll's recent trilogy on the Pacific War is excellent. The Marianas/Philippines is covered in one of the latter 2 books but I recommend them all.

I found Tolls first installment inferior to just reading wikipedia.

I am leery of going on to the next two books...
