The other thread that was locked (I'm not a fan of locking threads, unless for locking Carona thread which is clearly not game related) failed to mention these books that I browsed via my local uni's library catalog.

Since I have a five-book per month limit, thought I would ask for any other good books that weren't mentioned in the thread that shall not be named:

Stalin's Curse
House of Government
Russia: A History
The Great Patriotic War (Stalin)
Crisis of the Old World Order

I thoroughly enjoyed (A People's Tragedy: The Russian Revolution: 1891-1924 by Orlando Figes.)

Not an easy read but IMHO worth it.

Highly recommended, especially the civil war.
We easily forget the interventions.

Fitzroy McLean Eastern Approaches, he was British Military Attache (aka a spy) in the Moscow embassy from 1935-7. The first part of the book is mostly a report of his attendance at the first stage of the 1936+ purge when the target was the remnants of the pre-1917 Bolsheviks.

Its a really interesting insight as he watched Bukharin demolish the presented case against him and then end each session with something like 'if the party says I did that then the party must be right'. If read with Koestler's Darkness at Noon and Serge's Case of Comrade Tyulenev then its a really interesting insight into the thinking of the nomenclatura as the regime turned on them.

McLean got bored and went for an unauthorised jaunt around Soviet Central Asia till he was caught and deported. Fought with the SOE, mostly in Yugoslavia and there is another fascinating section on watching the Red Army move up for the battle of Belgrade - with ocmments as to what their logistics infrastructure really consisted of - trucks full of ammunition in one direction, wounded in the other.

What Russia? Catherine's? Last Czars'? Soviet Russia's? Yeltsinite's or Putinite's?

E. H. Carr's 14 volumes (which I read in my teens

) are a classic. We're talking about scholarship here, not about some crude and cheap propaganda (pro-soviet or pro-bourgeois eh)

Actually the Carona thread is game related since it is affecting the operations of the company and that affects the games.

Not books, but on YouTube, there are a series of excellent and well narrated documentaries. Search "Last of the Tzars", 3 or 4 in the series. I watched them all last week.
