The Battle for Jan Mayen Island

This is the first Northern Fury scenario I have properly played, and I was inspired to finally do it after reading Northern Fury: H-Hour.

So I'm basically screwed. It's day two of the war, and I only have a handful of light assets on and around Jan Mayen Island. And the Soviets are coming.

I start by launching Sidewinder armed F-5s once I see air contacts over the island. In the ensuing dogfight. I lose one of the F-5s, but my two pilots miraculously shoot down Four Yak-38s as well as a Yak-141. The other F-5 lands back at base on Jan Mayen.

Later, I detect a low flying Bear Foxtrot approaching the island. I launch the re-armed F-5 which hits the Beat Foxtrot with two sidewinders, but is damaged by it's tail gun. The F-5 makes it back to base, but is not repaired in time for any further sorties. The Bear Foxtrot later succumbs to it's damage and goes down over the ocean.

Then, waves of transports bore in right toward the island. My RB 70 MANPADS platoon ultimately expended all of their missiles, downing three transports and damaging several others.

Nonetheless, Soviet VDV Forces land in force on the island. My MANPADS platoon is overrun, while my lightly armed Signal platoon expends all of it's ammunition before being surrounded. During the short ground battle, I launch my three serviceable aircraft. First the P-3 Orion which takes a minor hit from a VDV MANPADS launch. The damage is not too bad and the aircraft remains in the air south of Jan Mayen for some time.

Next the Two F-5s, armed with Bullpup missiles, launch. I intend to send them to blast the Soviet support ship Azov, then divert to Iceland.

The lead F-5 launches right behind a formation of paratrooper transports. The pilot engages with cannon fire and damages a few transports, but is shot down by another VDV MANPADS.

The Second F-5 Launches and I am able to get it away from the Island. I spot the Azov, and the F-5 fires both Bullpups, then withdraws to Iceland. The Bullpups both strike the Azov, causing heavy damage and leaving her dead in the water.

Simultaneously, the airborne Orion detects the Kiev group. The American submarine Jacksonville is close to being into position to attack, and I order it to try and slip into the group to attack the Kiev.

However, One of the Udaloy Is escorting the Kiev detects the Jacksonville and fires on it, causing damage. With little other choice, the Jacksonville fires two torpedoes at the Udaloy I. When the torpedoes are about half way to the target, more torpedoes sink the Jacksonville. But her two torpedoes sink the Udaloy. Shortly thereafter, one of Kiev's Yak-141s shoots down the Orion, and the one surviving F-5 has safely landed at Reykjavik.

The Norwegian submarine Sklinna, which had been patrolling south east of Jan Mayen, is able to get in range to torpedo and sink the crippled Azov.

In the final action, something extraordinary happens. The one un-engaged asset left is the Danish Frigate HDMS Vædderen has been heading in the general direction of Jan Mayen, and unfortunately, the forward ships of the Kiev Group have closed dangerously close to her.

The Vædderen cannot flee, so I order her into a flank speed charge against the nearest Kiev escort, A Krivak class frigate. I keep the Vædderen on Emcon. To my stunned amazement, she gets within effective range to fire her 76mm gun. I order weapons free on the Krivak. The Vædderen fires countless 76mm shells at the Krivak, causing extensive damage, before the Krivak is eventually destroyed. Right as I am stunned at this, a Soviet ASCM slams into the Vædderen causing heavy damage, though shortly thereafter, the scenario timer runs out, so she is technically not dead yet.

My final score was 157; a Major Victory according to the scenario. I call it a heroic last stand caused some serious casualties on the Soviets.

Vædderen

Well done. This is a tricky one, but in almost every case the Vædderen amazes us. When Joel and I ran through it several times to work some stuff out, she had us shaking our heads.

In 94 she is only 4 years old and built with surveillance and stealth in mind, probably some of the best ship based sensors in the NF campaign and her stealthiness is ahead of its time. She will very likely be featured in an early chapter of our next book.

No, the ship you speak of in RSR is the MV Julius Fucik, a Soviet made barge carrier which is disguised as an American cargo ship for the surprise assault on Iceland.

Vædderen seems to be a charmed ship in this scenario. She was for my playthroufh as well! I had the pleasure of actually seeing her in port a couple of yeara ago.

"Sir, the Kiev is going down, this will be a major blow to the Soviet plans." The USS Jacksonville was awesome!!!

(Actually, the submarine didn't survive. Right after sinking the Kiev, she was found by a sonobuoy and killed with torpedoes. But her sailors were true heroes.)

So here is what have happened so far:

1. The USS Jacksonville set the course towards Jan Mayen island at cruise speed and max. depth (-984 ft). At every 15 minutes she stopped and came to 140 ft. The first enemy warships were detected as CZ contacts, so the submarine went beck to -984 ft and started creeping. As the enemy ships were coming closer, they could be heard even from this depth. An this was the moment when the fun started. The first victim was a brand new Krivak IV class frigate, which was sunk by two torpedoes. Right after launching, an enemy torpedo was detected, but it was far from the submarine, so the enemy did not know its exact position. It was easily dodged at flank speed (32 knots). After the chase a Kresta II class cruiser came into range. The Jacksonville fired four torpedoes to the ship (two were enough to sink it), and turned north at flank speed to avoid the next enemy torpedo. After dodging it, she slowed down to creep to avoid detection. And now the Kiev was well within range. All remaining torpedoes were launched from the tubes. Five hit the Kiev and I got the "scenario has concluded" message.
2. The Sidewinder-armed F-5s departed from Jan Mayen airfield for an AAW patrol. Four Yak-38 Forgers arrived from north, and my fighters could shot down only three, by using up all missiles and the ammo for their guns. They returned to the airfield for a quick turnaround. Meanwhile, the two Bullpup-armed aircrafts were launched to find the Azov by using just the good old "Mk1 Eyeball". Some minutes later Tu-16 Badger bombers arrived. Missiles from MANPADS were launched to them, and three were shot down. Only the last one could drop its bombs accurately, but those bombs destroyed everything on the airfield, including the P-3, the two F-5s and the runway. The other two F-5s could not find the Azov. They had to RTB, but the runway at Jan Mayen was damaged and Keflavik was too far away, so both aircrafts were abandoned. An-12 Cub and An-22 Cock transport planes arrived from east. The MANPADS opened fire, but these large planes did not go down after one hit. Only one was shot down, the others could drop the BMD-3s and the paratroopers.
3. The HNoMS Sklinna moved northeast, closer to the island at max. depth (-568 ft), and "laid down" to the sea floor with the engines turned off. A Tu-142 Bear maritime patrol aircraft started circling around the place, but it could not detect the submarine. Later an Echo II class SSN was detected, right when the Azov was coming into torpedo range. Two torpedoes were launched towards the Azov, both hit and the ship started sinking. The submarine launched another torpedo (just to make it safe), then turned south at 6 knots and still max. depth. Two Ka-27 Helix ASW helicopters arrived from somewhwere, equipped with active dipping sonars and magnetic anomaly detectors. They could spend only some minutes in the area (probably ran out of fuel and RTB), and the SSN had disappeared earlier, so he Norwegian submarine was still alive.

That scenario was really fun and exciting. I was literally shaking when I launched the six torpedoes towards the Kiev (and this is just a game...). I am a new Command player and I have an old laptop, which can run only smaller scenarios. I like the "Fury" series very much. Even the smaller scenarios have a very good story and they are fun to play. Thanks!

Great write up Ilya78. Agree this is a very fun little scenario, glad you enjoyed it, not many have managed to sink the Kiev as far as I know. In a couple of my run-thoughs the Jacksonville was sunk, and in others I just monitored and reported choosing to fight another day. That group has a lot of sonars and ASW helos.

Well done!

And here is what happened after sinking the Kiev:

- As I wrote before, the Jacksonville did not survive. However, four of her torpedo tubes got reloaded and all four torpedoes were launched towards the only valid contact, a DDG, which was fleeing at 35 knots. At the next moment the enemy torpedo impacted and the submarine sank. The four torpedoes could reach and sink the destroyer (a Kashin I). So the Jacksonville destroyed a frigate, a cruiser, an aircraft carrier and a destroyer. That was truly amazing! I checked the saved game with the editor and it was obvious that I had some really extreme luck with that submarine.
- The Sklinna has made it. The ASW helicopters returned (now there were three of them), but could not find her, and eventually the Bear got bored either and left the area.
- I used the HDMS Vaedderen as an ELINT platform, I just did not want to risk this nice new ship.

Thanks again, and yesterday I returned to Jan Mayen island in the "Cutting the tether" scenario, but it is another story...

Sounds like this is going to be a fun mission for me to play. I've already put a major spanking on the Russians in H-Hour about two months ago. Seems like I gave a boring AAR as nobody responded to my post.
