Hi, I'm trying to change the Yugoslav roundel (I've replaced Yugoslavia with the Confederate States for my mod). I've found the files Flag_sprite and game_screen_flag_sprites in the interface folder, and the files morale_flag_sprites, resource_flag_sprites, unit_counter_flag_sprites, unit_counter_flag_sprites_zoom, unit_nato_flag_sprites, and unit_nato_flag_sprites_zoom in the bitmaps folder. What I can't find is the file with the units roundels in - where is it?

Hi

In the Interface folder there is a file called unit_activation_sprites.png, I think the one you're after is that one?

Cheers Bill! Yes, that's it.

And using the layer interface in GIMP whilst cutting and pasting a scaled down flag allows me to make the flag I'm using sufficiently opaque (though I'm not sure what the opaque flags are for who exactly how opaque they should be - 60%, 50% and 30% seems to be in the ballpark). Don't like the square version of the flag so I think I'll make a round one.

I think the varying opaqueness is how the game engine makes the roundels seem to blink.

And if we're talking about the same file, it's also how the engine shows units accumulating experience.

Just so we're all on the same page, this is a detail of the unit_activation_sprites file.

Any work I did on this file (along with my notes) is on my old Windows 7 computer, so I'm currently floundering around trying to remember what's what. (And like Nora Ephrom, I remember nothing).

The problem I have always had with this file is that there seem to be more images (which I've numbered 1-8) than I can account for.

Numbers 1 and 2 (and possibly 3 ?) have to do with the blinking of the activation sprite.

The other five numbers seem to be related to the experience symbols that appear in the unit information field.

You can't ignore these because if you do you end up with ugly white squares instead of symbols that become progressively brighter as a unit gains experience.

But I'm at a bit of a loss to explain why there are so many (5 or maybe 6) sprites devoted to this. Full color, half-colored, and blanked out make sense to me, but what are the other ones there for?

At one point (a year or two ago on my old computer) I made a test version of this file with just numbers and ran some saved games to try to figure out what everything was doing.

I also took extensive notes and saved them into a text file, and its this lost text file which is buried somewhere in my old computer.

It would probably be easier to repeat the experiment.

In the meantime, it would be really great if Hubert or Bill could chime in and say what each numbered slot is supposed to do.

There are a few spots in my own mod that I'm not really happy with, I'd like to repeat the exercise for WAW, and if I ever make another version of the Marsden Harly mod for the WW I game I'll need to mod this file.

FYI, my not totally adequate solution for the Yugoslav activation sprite was to use the British one (because the order of the colored bands was right).

I haven't fixed the Turkish roundel in any of these games yet, but it's at the top of my list.

Rows 1 to 4 are related to the units on the map and their current status, e.g. fully active for the first row, the flash for the second row, the third and fourth row I think are related to when a unit can no longer move or a subdued flash if it has moved and can still attack or something like that.

Rows 5 to 8 are all related to unit experience as shown in the information panels.

Hope this helps!
Hubert

I have made similar custom file in order to identify them (unit activation sprite file with Germany modified, different
colors squares)
So far I found 1 and and 2 are the blinking ones
and for EXP I have seen 5,6,8

I dont know for 3,4,7.

I check on war Map/strategy map but still 1,2 are used (either in 2D or 3D)
The editor allows 5 EXP max (current game is 3 EXP max)
so maybe the missing ones are related to that (more progressive EXP display when max value is 5)
