41 JA i9 continued.

Zhukov musters Red Army reserves to launch a counterattack on the German Dnieper crossing bridgehead near Soshnykiv east of Kyiv. Luftwaffe musters all remaining uncommitted planes to support the defenders (2 TAC fly in defense totalling 10 points divided by 2 for forest = 5).

Despite max Luftwaffe effort the Red Army forces commanded by Zhukov, spearheaded by 2 tank armies, manage to drive the Wermacht invaders back across the Dniepr with heavy losses. Oura! :)

Zhukov along with 59th army and 1st Motorized division occupies the forest region. A GBA (Guards Banner Army) is generated which will make a big difference for the Red Army....
.....whoops, actually GBA's not implemented yet so nevermind that fantasy.

Greatly enjoying this AAR. Thank you for it. Hairy attack there. Not sure if I'd have had the cojones for it.
Also interesting decision to save the ARM at the expense of the ENG.

Cheers

The attack is not that dangerous for the attacker. It is a Blitz so unless the roll is a 5 (4% probability) , the attacker will lose at most one unit: the 2-5 motorized division (2 BPs). Even on a roll of a 5, the Militia wil take the second attacker loss (2 BPs, 1 turn to rebuild).

The probability of getting the 2S result is 21%.

You are right, of course. Even failing the fractional odds, the nasty '8' is avoided. And attacker disruptions, though tiresome, would likely be tolerable. Favourable risk/reward balance of restoring the river line may even make the attack mandatory. I shouldn't be such a Nervous Nellie.

And it's late in the turn already, which means that if the Soviet units gets disorganized, the risk of losing those units is lower than if this attack was made early in the turn. If it has been impulse 3, the risk involved is far greater. But it's impulse 9 already and the Luftwaffe is refuelling and reloading the bombs for the rest of the turn...

Wait until 1944 when every hex has 3 units in it and all sides just want the unit density to go down. Some folks want divisions for the specialty flavor they allow in operations, but want a lower counter density. So they play 2d10 with ‘first loss must be a corps’.

I think this is a good rule brian. i'd also be ok to play without divisions.

Axis rolls a 3 and doesn't find the Allies. However, Allies roll 4 and find the Axis force. CW has one surprise point.

Axis select a naval air combat.

How will CW arrange their air? Will the CVP fly as a fighter? And if it flies as a bomber which plane will then be front bomber?

West Med. I corrected the post.

So there are no Italian shipping in the sea area. only the neutral Vichy, so the box with the Axis air had to be picked.

I am pretty sure that CVP are exempt from that rule. I'll check to make sure.

Yes, the rule specifically state FTR. And a CVP is not a FTR. So same A2A value as both a bomber or fighter.

I believe AA fires and result is only aborts. Place them any way you like and abort all CW units to Gibraltar.

The Allied AA fire reduce the bomber strength with one (worst die out of 6). (1, 7, 7, 5, 10, 3)

The CW force aborts to Gibraltar.

No strategic bombing.

Germany bombard, and ground strike, the Soviet defenders south-west of Vitebsk.

The abysmal success rate for the Axis air force, with ground strikes, continues. The FTR3 hit no targets. Fortunately the German artillery remedy the situation somewhat and disorganize two defenders.

Land Moves Continued:

Italy:
MIL (Skopje) -> 67,49 (Greece)

Japan:
HQI (76,138) -> 76,136
INF (Sian) -> 77,134
CAV Div (82,135) -> 82,134

Air Transport:
Germany:
ATR3 + It MTN (Naples) -> Olbia
ATR3 (Olbia) -> Florence

Germany makes two land attacks.

First is in the north versus Timoshenko, and supporting cavalry.
Second attack is against the guard army SW of Vitebsk. This attack has 3 points in ground support.

The attack against hex 40,56 with the HQI is +5.75. Will USSR select blitz or assault?
