Hi,

I am new to this game and it would be great if someone could help me. I've read the manual and watched some videos but after playing two small tutorial scenarios, there are still some questions left in my mind. Oh and sorry for making some grammar mistakes, I am not a native speaker.

Ok, here are my questions:

1. How can I destroy enemy units?

I've played "War in the east" and the strategy number one there is to isolate units. But this doesn't really seem to work in this game. Although I've cut some units off they are still able to retreat. It only seems to work if I surround them completely. But therefor I would always need six units all the time. So what is the right strategy in this game? Do I really have to attack over and over again and push the enemy to the edge of the map?

2. Air force

Ok, you can set your fighters on "air supereriority". Do I get some combat bonuses in general? Is this the same with "combat support"?

3. Artillery

You can decide if you let an artillery piece in range participate in one battle with full power or in more than one with half power - Am I right here?

4. Headquarters

One again I am used to the command/supply system of "War in the east". In this game you have to roughly keep your units in a five hex distance. How is it here? Is there are similar distance which you have to always consider?

5. Is there are stacking limit?

=> Thanks for helping a new player! My first impressions of this game are very good. I really like the idea of the timestamps!

Stacking limit is nine chits to a hex max.

Also, no more than three air unit chits to an airfield. Those count toward the nine chit limit.

Losses alone can destroy units, but cutting off retreat is best. All six surrounding hexes must be blocked by either friendly units strong enough not to be RBC'd out of the way by the defenders, or by impassable terrain. And that's for ground units - air units will just reposition. (So, you want to bombard air units).

So far as that goes. But note that artillery is more effective supporting a ground assault than bombarding alone.

No. There is no command radius.

Nine units per hex.

Thanks for your answers, this helps a lot! Let me try to ask number three again:

Do you have a higher chance of winning a ground combat if your planes have secured air superiority?

That question is more complicated than it seems. What I would suggest if firing up the manual and starting from the top. Do a search for two or three things. Air Superiority (Local Air Superiority will also come up). Interception. Combat Support.

The easy answer would be yes the more combat support you can provide the better chance you will win a battle. But it's good to know how everything effects your combat support.

Once again thank you for your help. May I ask one last question?

In "War in the east" it is one very important goal to capture enemy cities/factories in order to reduce the amount of replacements the opponent gets. How is it in this game? Is there a similar way to do it?

Depends on scenario. FitE2 has factories that you can rail to the Urals for the Soviets to keep them from being captured.

Russo-German War has things like "Galacian Oil Field" hex that if Soviets capture, reduces German supply etc.

Other oil fields do similar things. Sometimes scenario has automatic events, also like Russo-German War.

It all just depends on what the scenario designer has put into the scenario. Some have things like this, others not.

Also, capturing / destroying HQ units can have effects on supply of their troops, iirc.

By achieving air superiority, your combat bonuses are securing supply, use and prevention of combat support, interdiction capabilities, and prevention and use of air drop missions.

Yes, such situations in TOAW can trigger an event that reduces replacements or do a bunch of other things. As Hellen mentioned, it has to be set up in the scenario by the scenario designer.

Cheers
