Still Jan 14...next 2 days will be interesting.

There is almost inevitable carrier battle looming near Tarawa. CV TF and CVE TF there are commanded by Spruance and his clone (it's database error, 2 of them available..which is handy sometimes, like now... )

Adm Halsey has been sent to reinforce from PH, his TF has 3 CVs and 4 CVLs. F**k the coordination rule, need as many planes as possible. They won't get there for few days, but might either revenge Spruance(s) and unfortunate Amphibious forces..or in case of victory, pick up the stragglers.

To add insult to injury, I mistakenly invaded Milne Bay with 3rd Mar Div that was fully prepped for Shortlands. That lead to some nasty landing disruption..will take few days to sort that out. Fortunately it's not an atoll. Was surprised how well-defended it is, since there is IJA 71st Div. Thus secondary amphibious TF will leave Sydney with 1st Mar Div and some remnants of 3rd that somehow were not loaded to original TF.

I have also lost 2 subs already this month, which is not good. Sea of Japan seems to be bit hot place...

That battle was the ultimate Charlie Fox (cluster f**k for those not familiar with the saying) for both sides...massive plane and pilot losses for both sides with nothing really to show, one of my BBs got lightly damaged by torpedo (flt 15), we didn't get any hits on IJN ships...

I must say I have rarely seen anything like this..

(Avengers attacking with bombs are from CVE TF, they were attacking at extended range.

Hundreds of planes were lost during these 2 days...Halsey might still catch now depleted IJN CVs.

This really says it all. USN lost about 200 planes, Japanese about 300. Few of those losses were in minor LBA actions elsewhere, but 95% at least were in that 2 day carrier battle.

You set your Avengers with bombs too high. Set them at 1000 feet. They will have more AAA losses but will not be hampered by the low altitude loss of bombs. The should then get more hits as well.

I set Avengers on CVs to 15k Naval attack, since apart from extended range, they use torpedoes and will drop to 100 ft to launch them. 15k is to avoid lot of flak and coordinate better with escort fighters. On CVL/CVEs, my Avengers are also 50% naval search, allowing CV Avengers to concentrate fully to Naval attack. There is method in this madness

They'd have done lot better if enemy was hex closer, alas, they were only within extended range.

Naval search works best at 6000 feet.

Of course, but one can only choose one altitude, both for naval attack and search.

Halsey caught IJN CV TF Jan 17 1944....and results were really underwhelming, probably because of bad weather. There was brief combat exchange. Hopefully he can catch them again next day.

While sinkings are subject to heavy FOW, this is the latest Jan 20 1944. Seems IJN has lost CV and CVL (unconfirmed). CVL is pretty sure, CV not so much.

I am not pleased losing 3 subs in 3 weeks. I am still way ahead of historical results, I think USN lost 52 subs in whole war in Pacific (IIRC).

As you can see, I have been pushing my subs hard, even when I am rotating them back when combined damage (sys+flt+eng) is 10=>

By the way, if someone wants a save, I can make it available. I think you also need to download scen 26 from

DaBabesLiteADec7

Some of you might want to play Allies (or even Japan) from 1944 vs. AI.

Check and see the enemy ground losses. If he lost dive bombers, then the CV went down. If not, then it probably did not sink but is in a world of hurt.

One thing to note, as Allies, you start to get really good sub commanders from late 1943.

They have Naval/ Aggressiveness 70+ and Leadership/inspiration 60+. Very few "duds" (stats in 50s).

Just to remind that this AAR includes links to several earlier saves, including one after PH for those who dislike the first turn clickfest

Check the previous pages from start to find the links.

Just remember to d/l the Scen 26 too for them to work.

I like DaBabes Lite, since it can be used with stock and AndyMac improved AI with no problems. There has been extensive data changes that I like, especially AAA, ASW and many others.

It seems really odd that you are taking Canton, China while the front in the Pacific is all the way down at Mili! Could you post the large strategic map for us?

This is because of earlier "Cannae of Moulmein" which basically destroyed IJA combat power in SE Asia. That left British and Indian troops free to roam almost at will. After Canton is Hongkong. After that invasions in China will be limited, mainly because of heavy garrison requirements. Canton itself requires 320 assault value garrison. Just wondering that against whom they are garrisoning? Triads? Boxer rebels?

SW Pacific, South Pacific and Central Pacific have just started. SW PAcific has taken Tulagi, Rossel Island and Milne Bay. Next will be Manus I. and Kavieng.

Next Central Pacific will take Wake I. back, mostly for sentimental and naval search capability reasons.

Here is the strat map from Feb 23 1944.

To give some idea about my amphibious invasions, i'll add a pic of invasion of Mili.

It consists of CV TF, Bombardment TF, Amphibious TF (main assault force, this time 1 USMC div, 2 Tank Bn, Combat Eng Rgt), Amphibious Command TF (AGC or several with Amphibious Force HQ loaded and prepped for target, note that Amphibious Corps HQ won't work, it has to be Force, set not to unload, it is in effect when in same hex), Transport TF with follow-on base forces and engineers.

If i am not sure about defences of target, I might have secondary Amphibious TF with "floating reserve of 1 rgt and some battalions. Also, if there is danger of enemy surface forces, additional Surface Combat TF with CAs/CLsDDs is added.

Are you dumping massive supplies into China by way of Rangoon? With the Chinese armies replacement rates and being well supplied, supported by Commonwealth troops, you should be able to make more progress there. Unless, of course, the Japanese are reinforcing China with rebuilt units from the SEAC area.

Yes, I am running Transport TFs from Madras and Calcutta to Rangoon, 30k-50k supplies per convoy.

And since SE Asia has some light industry, there is some extra supply available from Bangkok and Singapore etc.

When playing Allies, I like to put a lot of otherwise unneeded xAKs and all AK/APs hauling supplies to Cape Town. I will build up millions there. Think of that many more supplies available to the Chinese. Extra thousands per month don't go very far compared to hundreds of thousands.

I keep the smaller xAKLs for supplying small bases.

I have decent supply in India. That is basically because I have continuous supply of fuel from Abadan to Karachi. Lot of it just got dumped to somewhere...donno where.

I do use Cape as one of the supply points but mainly for fuel to Australia. Started to run xAK convoys to Rangoon too, since I have 5.9 mil supplies sitting in CT.

+1 on the amount of supply. I once took most of the South China coast and began dumping in supply. There were a lot of holes in the Japanese defence lines so the supply got to basically every Chinese unit. It took 4 Million supply before the red and yellow ! symbols disappeared and units started to fill out. But in the meantime their morale picked up around 10+ points and they got some upgrades in artillery. That was enough to halt Japan's advance and with a couple of million more supplies the Chinese began to push back in several places. Japan could not concentrate enough to cover everywhere, so the breakthroughs started and played heck with Japanese supply lines. Beginning of the end for Japan.
The best part is that Chinese units have a lot of AV and can take over garrison requirements. I pick units with lousy leaders for garrison and I split units to make smaller garrisons.
