Liberty University pressing charges against journalists

quote:

Liberty University has pushed for criminal trespassing charges against two journalists who pursued stories about why the evangelical college in Virginia has remained partially open during the coronavirus outbreak.
.
.
.
But he (Jerry Falwell Jr.) said he has kept the campus open for international students and those with nowhere else to go. On Thursday, there were about 1,000 students living on campus, roughly one-eighth of its normal residential population.
.
.
.
Virginia Magistrate Kang Lee signed arrest warrants for Class 1 Misdemeanors against the two journalists, punishable by up to a year in jail. It’s up to Lynchburg Commonwealth’s Attorney Bethany Harrison to decide whether to prosecute, and she said Thursday she hasn’t seen any details on the case.

Liberty’s security forces investigated the journalists following publication of their articles, collecting witness accounts that they were on campus without permission, Falwell said.

He said it was a safety issue not to let outsiders in at a time of a global pandemic.

“When people are coming from known hot spots, we feel we owe it to our students and our parents not to let that happen,” Falwell said in an interview on Thursday. “The only way to send the message is to let them know they will be prosecuted.”

What’s really important is writing about a decision that goes against safety guidelines and puts people’s health at risk, said Richard Tofel, president of ProPublica. MacGillis’ article, headlined “What’s it Like on One of the Only University Campuses Still Open in the U.S.?” was published on March 26.

https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/liberty-university-pressing-charges-against-journalists/ar-BB12pgwT

So where were these students supposed to go? Why would these journalists go there and possibly bring in the disease?

Smoking weed and coronavirus: Even occasional use raises risk of COVID-19 complications

quote:

If you're smoking weed to ease your stress during the coronavirus pandemic, experts say it's time to think twice.

Smoking marijuana, even occasionally, can increase your risk for more severe complications from Covid-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus.

"What happens to your airways when you smoke cannabis is that it causes some degree of inflammation, very similar to bronchitis, very similar to the type of inflammation that cigarette smoking can cause," said pulmonologist Dr. Albert Rizzo, chief medical officer for the American Lung Association. "Now you have some airway inflammation and you get an infection on top of it. So, yes, your chance of getting more complications is there."
.

.
"Because it attacks the lungs, the coronavirus that causes Covid-19 could be an especially serious threat to those who smoke tobacco or marijuana or who vape," the NIH said in its announcement.

Louisiana Deaths Spike as State Sees Conflicting Signs About Virus Spread
While coronavirus-related hospitalizations in the state have slowed, deaths have spiked in the last few days.

quote:

Coronavirus-related deaths in Louisiana stood at record levels Wednesday as the state sees conflicting signs over whether the spread of the virus is slowing.

Officials reported 70 new deaths Wednesday, matching Tuesday's tally for the highest number of deaths reported in one day. The new figure brings the death toll to 652.

Though deaths have spiked, the rate of growth of coronavirus-related hospitalizations is slowing, Gov. John Bel Edwards said during his daily press briefing. Edwards has previously said that state health officials believe they may be beginning to flatten the curve of the virus.

"The simple fact of the matter is that the number of new hospitalizations suggests that we are trending in the right direction, but thus far the number of deaths is higher than we want it to be to have corroboration of that, so the two most essential data points are not in agreement," Edwards said.

"Overall, we think we probably are heading in a better direction with a lower trajectory and that we are starting to flatten the curve, but we can't be sure yet," Edwards said.

IMO that's a presentation of news headlines/summaries that's falsely disconcerting.

"Spike" and "record levels" create mind pictures. They are the truth but not the whole truth. Truth without the whole truth can be misleading (and sometimes worse). That's why in court we take an oath to tell "the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth."

Contrary to the alarming words, Louisiana's worrisome per capita outbreak is projected on the downswing. The modeling is the same Univ. of Washington site proving so useful for each state and for the US in general.

By that measure, the pandemic there is heading down and is projected to end at month's end.

OUCH! Giant Asian hornets that can ‘kill with a single sting’ to invade virus-stricken US
Apr 9 2020

https://www.the-sun.com/news/661834/giant-asian-hornets-kill-single-sting-invade-virus-us/

"Experts are now warning that the species will begin to swarm in spring, as the hornet's life cycle begins in April."

"Asian hornets are similar to European hornets that live in the U.S., but they are not native to America.

They are large insects measuring almost 2in long, originally from Southeast Asia, that prey on small creatures - especially bees.

Just one sting is enough to kill someone allergic to their venom."

European hornets aren't native either. They were introduced. I've written about 'em before, so have a bit of familiarity.

That and vaping I'd guess are factors. Probably often compounded by obesity.

China Reclassifies Dogs from Livestock to Pets in Response to Coronavirus
April 9, 2020

quote:

China’s agriculture ministry has reclassified dogs, which it previously deemed livestock, as pets in response to the coronavirus pandemic.

“As far as dogs are concerned, along with the progress of human civilization and the public concern and love for animal protection, dogs have been ‘specialized’ to become companion animals, and internationally are not considered to be livestock, and they will not be regulated as livestock in China,” the Ministry of Agriculture said in guidelines published on Wednesday that are now open to public comment.

The new coronavirus is thought to have originated in bats that then infected wild animals that were sold in the so-called wet markets of Wuhan, where the outbreak began.

In February, as the virus was beginning to spread and before it reached global pandemic status the next month, China temporarily banned the farming and consumption of “terrestrial wildlife of important ecological, scientific and social value,” and plans to sign the ban into permanent law later this year. But the wildlife trade is widespread in the country, and previous efforts to curtail the market have had little effect.

The guidelines list 18 traditional livestock species, including cattle, pigs, poultry, and camels, as well as 13 “special” species that will also be allowed to be sold, including reindeer, alpaca, pheasants, ostriches, and foxes.

Japan to Pay Companies to Move Production Out of China
April 9, 2020

quote:

Japan will devote more than $2.2 billion of its coronavirus economic stimulus package to incentivize its manufacturers to move their production out of China as relations fray between the neighboring countries in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.

The record stimulus plan provides $2 billion for manufacturers to transfer production to Japan and over $216 million to help companies move production to other countries. Imports from China, Japan’s biggest trading partner, were down by nearly 50 percent in February as facilities in China closed while the coronavirus ripped through the country.

A new map by the NY Times. Again it's interactive, so the rollovers show actual rates of increase and numbers. Looks like the equatorial regions are getting it quicker now. At least a couple of countries in Africa, India, Bangladesh and Peru. Russia also now having a quicker growth. How much of this is testing? It'll be good to cross-reference that. As well as checking nearby countries in Africa and South America, as well as SE Asia.

Coronavirus: How to understand the death toll

Another one I haven't seen, again with numbers by county on rollover. This is a per capita map of the US. Interesting that there are some real hotspots outside of major metropolitan areas.

There are also people, like my aunt Donna, aged 91, who should have died years ago, but haven't. She smoked for 40+ years, had some other health issues, is overweight, and her main complaint about self-isolating was not being able to go out for ice cream every night near her condo in Florida. Yet she's sharp as a tack, still conducts a chamber music group (pre-isolation anyway) and always has a sharp retort ready.

So yes, she might die within a short period, and yet that could have been said for the last decade.

It's not surprising to find per capita hot-spots outside metropolitan areas. In rural areas, a case or 10 or 20 takes on out-sized meaning. Dougherty County (Albany), Georgia, is an example. Two big funerals in late February, as discussed here yesterday. Poof, large per capita number.
